Newsletter 020210

Gimpy #2 was our President today, and she seems to be getting more mobile every day.  She better since she and daughter Elsa-Jennie will soon be off to Thailand to put in 2 weeks of service with Habitat for Humanity.  Hope the excursion won't be too much for Roberta's ankle.

There was just a "bit" of confusion.  Program Chair for the day (month) was nowhere to be seen.  In the meantime a team of 2 from Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) were busily setting up their program with little or no help  or contact by Kiwanians (they did have lunch tickets).  Using my "position" as editor for a day I sat down and talked with them a while.  We all got our lunches and sat together.

Chair-for-the day showed up and had a discussion with our guests and it developed that they weren't expected and the Chair had made other arrangements.  The next thing I knew Nicole said "Now I can make that 1 PM meeting" and  began to disconnect her computer and pack up.  I concentrated on my lunch and kept out of it (How unusual is that!!)

Gimpy #2 started the meeting and Bob Rice led us in GBA.  The Pres then asked Gimpy #1 (Jack) who was scheduled for the invocation and to my surprise he tagged me.  That over with, Roberta looked around for guests: noting that the 2 guests at my table were the speakers and would be introduced later.  My mouth was full, so I couldn't argue, but when able I interrupted to note that Mark Coplan was actually a guest because there was a confusion and he and Nicole Sanchez were not speaking and, in fact, Nicole was leaving early – but then I was informed of "Change 2" and they were speaking.  Oh Well.

Borden and Bob Rice paid for not having signed Elsa-Jennie's Roster and Diane, accompanied by 2 fellow Circle Kers gave her report.  First, they have so far taken in $834 from their takeover of our Club last week.  Second they were selling/taking orders for Valentine Roses (remember, Sunday a week).  Third they need lots of help (rides) to something I didn't catch and the District Convention in SoCal.   Let Diane know if you can help.  Their regular meetings are on Tuesday, and they love to have Berkeley Kiwanians visit.

Some things coming up:
   RIF 2nd week in March
   YPSO Concert Feb 8.
   Cazz reconnoiter Feb 21
   Cazz Work Weekend Apr 16-18

We then had a somewhat extended discussion of Ground Hog Day capped off by a lecture by Evie on the subject.  Since I
can't spell the name of that town in PA, we'll leave it at that.  I'm not even sure if he saw his shadow!

JP reported that the Foundation Board had met and reviewed the available funds which were depleted by the economic "bust" of the last 2 years.  It looks like things are coming back, but only $35,000 could be scraped up for 2010 scholarships;  a $1,500 contribution for music scholarships at Cazz: and the offer to match up to $2,000 in donations to YPSO.  It won't be able to match funds for Haiti relief, but donations for that purpose will be accepted and passed on to District and International where they will be matched, giving at least 3 for 1.  More later on the time frame for accepting those checks.  Several came in today.

VC reported that BC is home (since Friday) and has a very involved frame holding his incision and whatever together; third time is a charm!  AND, VC had her own money!

Denise reported that "her Nick" is back at work as usual, but this time has an appointment with a doctor to see what can be done to stabilize him.  She had another scare last Wednesday but he seems fine now.

So, who were Nicole and Mark who WERE our program?  Jack introduced them and Mark, the Public Information Officer for BUSD introduced us to the Berkeley Alliance (School District, City, and UCB) and the Vision 20/20 Program and then Nicole took over.

Contrary to what "Berkeley" thinks of itself and what "outsiders" think of Berkeley, Berkeley has a race problem which is clearly

demonstrated by the achievement gap that can be shown.  Nicole showed us that the day one of the 9,000 children in BUSD is born her/his level of achievement can be predicted; and it is all based on race.

The 20/20 Vision program was initiated to first define the factors that cause this achievement gap and then develop the fixes that can overcome the problem.  Those factors have been defined and now it is time to implement corrective action where needed.

The 8 factors are:
Strong Academics
Good Health
Family Partnership (with school)
Kindergarten Readiness
Community/City/BUSD cooperation
Culturally/Linguistically Responsive
Using Data
Financial Viability and Sustainability
Target for full implementation is 2020.

So, next week the Superintendent (for 2 years) of BUSD will visit to fill us in on what's going on at BUSD.  Are they really going to reduce/eliminate science labs?  Come find out (can't always trust what you read in Berkeley newspapers!)

The following week, Feb 16, is the BHS "Take Over" – can our purses stand it??  And Feb 23rd is the Legion of Honor/Club Birthday to be held upstairs in our former meeting room.  PLAN TO BE THERE!  Every Tuesday, that is.

There's some confusion on dates for the Club and Foundation nominations and elections, so watch next week's Kollegiate.

Newsletter 012610

At this, the last meeting of January 2010, we were greeted at the "buy your lunch ticket" table by E. Goodman who directed each and every one of us to the lunch line where we got a slice or two of a delicious meatloaf, other assorted goodies, and your choice of beverage.  Barely had we sat down to chat and enjoy this delicious meal when a strange voice came over the microphone requesting an invocator and song leader.  F. Bliss requested that we be driven to pull out our wallets for the purpose of donating to a worthy cause, and P. Khong led us in a rousing rendition of GBA.  Amazing voices we have!!

You wonder the strange voice??  Seems ½ of the ½ presidents was missing in action and the other ½ of the ½ presidents was sitting at a round table with her family- thus, a young energetic Circle Ker Diane had taken over the microphone and zoomed through the whole meeting- playing games, threatening huge fines and otherwise creating total chaos and FUN!!
Yes, it was the "once a year"……….

CIRCLE K TAKEOVER

King Diane (as we were told to call her) was escorted by a group of Circle K Lords and Ladies (this editor did not capture all the names due to such laughter at table 4).  Among the

many "rules" which we lowly Berkeley Kiwanians would be fined for was hat when we spoke anyone's name it had to be spoken backwards.  Another was when we heard music we had to stand up and dance.
Do you want to walk around?  Two steps with the left foot, one with the right and then repeat…
No elbows on the table, and many more which at the moment have been relegated to the back of this editor's mind!!
The money just flowed into the fine box- because we elders just do not know how to behave in the midst of fun!!!

Before getting into the real stuff of taking money from our pockets King Diane did ask for reports from any committee heads who might wish to speak without getting fined!
1.      YEAH- According to S. Hearn we will be cooking for YEAH on Feb 1, this coming Monday, from 6pm-8pm.  Four had signed up!
2.      We hope there will be a RIF distribution in February.
3.      Interclubs were two- Regional Training Conference and San Leandro Crab Feed.
4.      Board meeting report:  Tabled the budget due to need for further discussion on increase in meal fee.  For Haiti donations, if you give to the BK

Foundation, it will go to CNH District Foundation where it will be matched.. and on up the chain.. matched each time.  The donation will grow before it reaches Haiti!!

And there was room and time for JL$$:
B. Carpenter is in the hospital again.. and hopefully the third time will be the charm.  B. Barnwell put in a check for $100 to cover the next 10 weeks of the increase in lunch fee.  He does not like loose change increments… or ad hoc committees.  D. Leonard will match for the following 10 weeks, and who's the next taker??  Our newer member Chino is headed to Japan for about 1 ½ years to teach English..  WE will miss you, Chino- and have fun!!

King Diane was more interested in $$$ going to baked goods..  One of "her" Lords became an auctioneer… and many of us purchased the following:
Phuoc: Cornbread
Jack: Brownies
VC: Board Picture (given to F. Bliss)
Denise: Cupcakes
VC: Clown art picture- will have Jack's
      picture sketched!!
Frank: Calciim Vitamin basket
Car Wash (don't know who got it!!)
Denise: Chocolate lover's basket
Phuoc: Ballroom dance lesson for VC
Phuoc: King's Cake for Linda
Linda: Chocolate Chip cookies
John: Chocolate Chip cookie basket
Evie: Chinese basket
Elsa Jennie: Dutch Apple Blueberry Pie
VC: Fish Oil + Cookie Basket for hubby BC
Bill Fay: Romance Candle Basket
Sandy: Handdrawn vase & flower picture

If you were there at this fantastic event you would know which item went for the most $$$.  I won't spoil that for you- except to say that it brought in $100….  Go Circle K!!

Your editor was advised that next week's speaker will be the City of Berkeley Superintendent of Schools.  He will be discussing the state of the District with emphasis on the controversy over the Science Department.  This should be a well attended meeting- so invite your friends and relatives!!!

Another meeting enjoyed, successful, fun, - and know that if you missed it, you were indeed missed.

We leave you with a SAQOTW:

How you spend your time is more important than how you spend your money.
Money mistakes can be corrected,
but time is gone forever.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEEK!!
BRING A FRIEND!!!

_____________________
On a Rainy Day

Well, it finally did rain. We were beginning to think it never would; now we're beginning to wonder if it'll ever stop. There are always the pluses and minuses… but we managed to slog through it to make it all the way to the City Club.

Half Prez Tamara presided, and immediately denied that Other Half Roberta was referring to her with her constant flattery about her "Better Half."

And Now for a Fresh Start

Yes, we had a pretty fresh team today: D. Leonard on the funky Fine Box, F. Bliss on the songfest, and R. Bliss doing a thoughtful invocation . Oops, and let's not forget E. Goodman giving away tickets.

As far as guests today, we had the usual honorable assortment of past and present, esteemed and otherwise, Lt Governors and District Trustees (in the persons of R. Bliss, F. Bliss, V. Carpenter et al). Since E. Levitch was not present, all was done with thoughtful and lavish decorum without interruption.

Oh wait, we did have a real guest, the familiar face of Z. Sher representing the Alameda Club and promoting their gala Chili Cook-Off  this coming Saturday. The cost is only $50 which includes dinner, but for one, this reporter is confused: does this mean that you're paying $50 for something else for dinner besides chili, or is it $50 chili?? And if you want to go, please note that it's at the "O" Club, wherever that is (maybe it's right after the "N" club and just before you get to the "P" club).

On a Clear Day

It was the Circle K who managed to clarify a few things through the raindrops. Diane introduced the esteemed yet motley crew.  And they have been BUSY, with the first general meeting of the semester coming right up. But the BIGGEST news…is that the TAKEOVER OF THE BERKELEY KIWANIS CLUB is next week! As instructed, be there and bring money! Be prepared for an exotic Mardi Gras theme!

The Governor's Visit last Saturday in Vallejo was a great success, thanks to Division Trustee R. Bliss!

Nominations coming up! Yes, our Duo Prez confirmed that a secret committee has been formed under the tutelage of longtime former Sec'y J. Rosano. The other members remain unknown, under a cloud of mystery. However, it was assured that they will fulfill their mission well. You need to throw your hat in the ring NOW!!!

Upbeat Monthly Report! Neophyte Sec'y F. Bliss just submitted our club report to higher authority with some impressive numbers: 127 service hours and $5260 in fund-raising!

Midyear Conference on March 6 in San Jose. Sign up now – don't be left out! Join the usual stalwarts..

Key Club Convention on April 9 – 11 in Sacramento. Join P. Khong as a chaperone and travel by luxurious rail accommodations.

Scholarship Committee! Special arrangements this year only: D. Haughin is Chair, subbing for Duo Prez T. Paradis (but she wants it back sooner than later!) AND V. Carpenter was enthusiastically welcomed to serve on the committee this year (if she doesn't wear funny hats). News is anxiously waiting from the Foundation Board in the next couple weeks as to how much $$$ will be available this year for scholarships (given the hit that such investments have taken in the economic downturn).

SUNSHINE REPORT

Well, to start with, poor B. Carpenter is going in for another try at stitching up his chest bones (maybe some metal & screws this time). Good luck, Bill! (Third time's a charm!)

B. Fay's dentist told him he was quite amazing for still having all his original natural teeth. What's he biting into next?

B. Price reported he's still driving but lost his car recently. We don't know if he's still looking for it…

AND then some sadder news: longtime BK'er Charlie Fitch passed away recently in Texas. The family requests donations be made to the Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation. If you wish to contact the family: Bruce Fitch, 5706 Maidstone Drive,
Richardson, Texas 75082

Jane Alexander reporting in from "the Island" in Georgia, adapting to "a slower pace, walking on the beach, and taking in the natural and historic beauty…All in all, retiring to Tybee was a very good move for me…Please send my best wishes to everyone in Kiwanis." Everyone please reply to her at birdladyjane@gmail.com.

Other upcoming events:
·         Board Meeting this Thursday
·         Legion of Honor Feb 23

Late Breaking Development!: Our Board has just decided on a great way to help out with the disaster in Haiti. All BK members are encouraged to make a donation, specifically designated for Haiti, to the BK Foundation, who will likely match it (request being made), then it will be forwarded to Kiwanis International, who will again match it, and then it will be matched again, and sent to UNICEF. YES, your donation would be multiplied 8 times! SEND THEM IN NOW!

Happy/Sads:
·         J. Piercy for his grandson's accomplishments in Junior Olympics
·         T. Paradis for her alleged new kitchen, auctioning off an appropriate cookbook + an X-rated coupon book (call TP for details)
·         P. Khong attending memorial for a close friend with many BK/CK'ers
·         V. Carpenter for hubby's added surgery
·         S. Hearn tax season joy
·         And many more…

And Now for a Fresh Program

And then there was Kirsten Saenz Tobey who was a partner in starting "Revolution Foods" which is an upstart into the revolutionized school food programs, focusing on healthy, natural foods. She spoke to the very interesting and challenging details of starting up such a program, and especially how to try to make any money doing it. In the end, though, it's the benefits to our children growing up that really count. A very interesting program. Mucho thanks, Kirsten!

Newsletter 011210

OK, there were only few of us present again today.  But we sure sounded better singing, since
our voice lessons last week.   With Franks leading and with more sopranos than tenors, we actually
sounded  almost in tune!!!!!!!!
Looked like a nice meal again today ( ye ole writer doesn't eat lunch on Tuesdays after a hearty breakfast
at Carrols, with the Albany/El Cerrito Club).   Sec. Frank did have to sell off a few left-over meals.
By the way, at its next Bd. Mtg., your Bd. of Directors will be discussing the additional cost per meal
instituted by the City Club as of Jan. 1st.
We only had a couple CKers present today as they're not all back at school yet.  We did have a couple
visiting Kiwanians for the State of Washington.

Reports:
1.      Inter Clubbing-----------Per Wm. Carpenter
a.       We had 5 members attending the  Alameda Club meeting.  (#19)
b.       We're hoping to have a large group attend the Gov's visit on the 16th.

2.      Community Service----------
a.       Frank was sure we did have some accountable hours of service, but couldn't locate
his notes------------sad $ !

3.      Sponsored Youth------
a.        Circle K take-over  will be on Jan. 26th.  So, let's show them our support by filling the
house with lots of members and lots of money to buy all that good stuff they bake.
.
4.       Fundraising--------
a.        Nice selection of See's candy is still for sale at each meeting.

5.       Scholarships-------
a.        Student applications are being distributed this week to the various schools
that we recognize for our program.
b.       The Scholarship Committee is looking for someone (for one yr.) to serve on the

7.      Other important facts---------
a.       New Club rosters were distributed today
b.      Leonard found out how to use our P.O. Box!!!!!!!!!!!

Program:

We always said some of our best speakers are our own members--------well that's what happened
today.   Our long-absent member George Maxe was here today to present the program in which
he is the Executive Director  FIRST TEE OF SAN JOSE.  It was like watching a new father show off his
first-born son!!!!!!!!  George is very proud of this program and justifiably so.
The First Tee of San Jose recently completed its 4th year of successful life skills programming.
The organization continues to be recognized as a model chapter as measured by its impact on youth,
retention of participation and volunteers, and strategic community relationships.
Their purpose is to develop youth through golf.   Their mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-
enhancing values through the game of golf.

Per Phuoc------------
Next week's program will be—"A Healthy School Lunch Program"

HAPPY TRAILS, PARTNERS!!!!!!!!!!

Newsletter 010410

HAPPY NEW YEAR

And although we expected the "other" ½ President, "Gimpy" (no, not Jack; Roberta) was the ½ in charge today.  Seems Tammy lost her aunt and godmother and was off to celebrate her life in Southern California and thence to some other far-flung USA location for business purposes – not to be around here next week, either.  Our condolences, Tammy.

Gimpy #2 is moving around pretty smoothly now, and I didn't notice a cane or other means of support.  We were a pretty raucous bunch (aren't we always!), but she kept her cool and probably collected a lot of money; the Fine Collector (Elsa-Jennie) certainly  was kept pretty busy.

Writing of our newest member, it should be noted that her name is correctly spelled as above.  Her address and phone are the same as her parents, but last year's last Kollegiate did not give her cell phone (510-484-4485) or "title" which is Educator.  We'll see what's in the new Roster, if and when we see the Roster.  It developed that she didn't even receive a copy upon joining and she didn't get fined for not having it with her!!

This is Phuoc's month, but none of the chores were assigned prior to the meeting and besides being President-for-a-Day, Roberta was selling tickets.  Didn't notice who was sitting there when she move up to the podium.  Bob Rice led GBA and there was an unfamiliar very clear soprano voice heard above all the Kiwanis grunts.  More on that voice later.

VC led a very short, but familiar invocation and we were off to the races or whatever.  At least there was lots of talking and shouting to be heard.

Alice was back from visiting family back in Taiwan and suggested that if any of us are in that country we should look them up and get familiar with the great food over there.  No mention of which she missed most here at UCB; the food or her family!  She was accompanied by Mimi who reported that UCB is on winter break and things will pick back up in about 2 weeks.

Chino dropped in to report the "bad" news that she is soon off to Japan to teach English to the kids.  We'll soon miss her (the bad news) but she has a "job"; good news.

The Secret Greeter was none other than Bob Skrak who reported that the only "un-friendly Kiwanian was Frank who had come in late and (naturally) had purchased "friendly" insurance.

I caught the tail end of the report by Sandy that 4 Kiwanians had cooked up dinner for YEAH (yesterday, I believe).  No report of any emergency evacuations to the hospital.  Another successful Kiwanis service!!

It was reported that the City Club has served notice that prices have gone up and along with that meal prices are increased.  The Board will take this under advisement at the next Board meeting, but pending some budget action a contest was held to gain some extra $$ for the occasion.  Gimpy#2 had brought in a small jar stuffed with jelly beans (wonder if they were Jelly Belly) and for 50 cents you could take a chance on guessing the number of "beans" in the jar.  It was not clear if there would be a prize and/or who had actually counted them ahead of time (hopefully with clean fingers).  I even missed who won and what the prize was, but there were free jelly beans being passed around.

A nominating committee is being formed.  Jack and Duane were assigned and at least one more volunteer is needed.  Call Roberta.  This is sort of a head's up for our Annual Meeting in April – maybe the date will be in the new Roster's calendar of events.

Bill C passed around a listing of the December interclubs and attendees thereto.  There were lots of members who did not have even one such attendance so noted.  He also looked for an interclub with Alameda this week for those who want to hear the LtGov's "speech" again.  Amazingly, he got 2 to join him and VC.

Ed L reported that the Roster will be available next week.  Promises, promises!

A sign-up for the District Guv's visit to our area on January 16th in Vallejo.  It's a 9 AM to ? affair with lunch included for $35.  Even more amazing is that it is a half-day

session on a SATURDAY.  Remember the "good old daze" when such events were in the evening and didn't disrupt a weekend (unless it was on a Saturday)?

AND, to celebrate their return, the UCB Circle K will stage their "take-over" of our poor club (We'll be even poorer afterwards) on January 26th.  Start saving your money now!!!

Phuoc was called upon to introduce our speaker Michèle Voillequé (yes, that's French and I've learned a new trick on the computer!!!)  Michèle's card lists her as "soprano, music educator" and it was her voice we heard as we sang GBA.  As a child Michèle loved to sing but was sort of discouraged when told that her voice was not "suitable"; later she realized that her voice was untrained rather than unsuitable and she obtained training and now trains other.  She has a children's choir at a local church, a senior choir at the SF VA Center, and gives private lessons.  And, she does have a very clear voice.

She and Frank had a discussion of the difference between "true" C and "perceived" C which was way beyond her audience, but she had an interesting demonstration of using the note names (do, re, etc.) ala Sound of Music.  She passed out a song sheet called "Patriotic Do-Re-Mi" with a few bars of GBA and My Country 'tis of Thee with note names rather than the words we usually sing (both marked for Alto voice although that didn't make much difference to her audience!  Except Frank, who found an error in the first note of the third line of GBA!!  FUN PROGRAM!!!

We missed you.  Come next week!          jp

A room feels warmer when filled with holiday trees, lovely lights, and sunshine filtering through the windowpanes along with many people chatting, laughing, enjoying a wonderful meal, making new friends and greeting old friends.  What a pleasure to attend a Berkeley Kiwanis luncheon.  If you haven't been lately, come on over and enjoy the comraderie. The Berkeley City Club is quite an enjoyable place to be!!

½ Pres. R. Bliss led the meeting; it is interesting to come just to see which ½ Pres. will be in charge!!  Each has her individual style- and they are working so well TOGETHER!!  What we have found out is that even they are not always sure who will be leading the meeting.
Greeting us at the door were ½ Pres R. Bliss & F. Bliss.  Our ever faithful B. Rice led us in GBA and E. Levitch gave a thoughtful invocation, thanking in particular for having survived another year.  P. Khong agreed to carry around the fine box.

NEW MEMBER!!!
Best event of our day was the induction of a new Bliss member!!  A proud Dad F. Bliss had the pleasure of advising his daughter about the goings on in Kiwanis.  (This editor suspects that she already has some knowledge of this!!).  He gave Elsa Jenny a copy of our bylaws (in such small print that only a young person could read it!), and a Kiwanis decal which she may "wish to put on her car".  Mom R. Bliss had the fun of pinning her daughter.  Elsa Jenny is a middle school math teacher, presently on a year sabbatical doing service.  She has already spent time with YEAH and Christmas caroling.  WELCOME, Elsa Jenny!!

SPEAKER NEWS:

B. Barnwell introduced our speakers.  Ruth Morgan, Anna Weng and Cheyenne were with us to speak about Project What, a Community Works program for teens (ages 15-20) with parents who are incarcerated.  Project What! raises awareness about the impacts of parental incarceration on children, with the long-term goal of improving services and policies that affect these children.  WHAT! stands for We're Here & Talking, which is exactly what this team is doing.  The program employs young people who have experienced parental incarceration as the primary curriculum content developers and facilitators for trainings.  Project What! Was launched in 2006 and in the first year the youth were instrumental in researching, creating and piloting a training curriculum for teachers and social workers.  Young people employed can earn from $8 to $12 per hour and are asked to commit to one year.  They must also be willing to speak to groups.  This editor went into their site and noticed that under "upcoming events" was listed their presentation to the Kiwanis Club of Berkeley!  Thank you, Bob, for bringing us this interesting and informative group.  Cheyenne was most willing to share her story with us.

RETRO EDITION! from 2007 (only the names & other equally minor details have been changed)

Twelve drummers drumming
Fa-la-la-la-LAAAAA…
It was a brisk and windy day, snow flurries swirling everywhere (or was that on Monday Night Football?)…yes, a perfect setting for "chestnuts on the fire" (only things missing were the chestnuts and the fire) …..But it didn't keep many people from coming out and enjoying a perfect setting for the
Berkeley Kiwanis Club's always festive annual Holiday Auction!

Eleven pipers piping
To start with, the City Club did it right and looked beautiful. Then the Kiwanis team put another layer on top of it, with its own touch. The tables were
filled with offerings too great to meet the eye. Exotic cookbooks, strange and rare wines, unusual
candies and concoctions, hard-to-find antiquities and inequities, and a mind-boggling array of treasures, large and small, old and new,  unique and ordinary, hot and cold, tall and short.
Ten lords a-leaping
Half Prez R. Bliss was poised to kick off the event in fine form and awaited the City Club's finest to set up the gourmet buffet. Oswaldo and troops showed up shortly. Meanwhile, perennial MC  J. Rosano barked orders all around (ignored by most as usual) and made seemingly important announcements over the mike. (the other 8 lords were standing by)
Nine ladies dancing
Yes, they were dancing and prancing -- Chair D. Haughin, Asst Chair V. Carpenter, Honorary Member S. Silveira, R. Bliss, S. Hearn, B. Lowman, L. Hannawalt and others were scurrying around, busy as elves, hanging stockings, gay apparel, and sugar plums all over the place (not to mention boughs of holly, figgy pudding, and frankincense, incense and nonsense).

Eight maids a-milking
As said, the tables were filled with great treasures, many of which were hand crafted by the amazing L. Hannawalt, jams, preserves, and other creations by V. Carpenter, S. Silveira, R. Bliss, and others, all of which drew handsome offers.
Seven swans a-swimming
The silent auction took off with much anticipation and intense bidding. To the rescue came the famous
UCB Circle K (there were at least 7) having been poised to run and run, and did more than keep up with the fast-paced auction, and handled the check-out table for fast final payment and processing, when we finally filed out, drained of energy but filled with satisfaction.
Six geese a-laying
We had some very generous donors, ranging from the Berkeley City Club, Tilden Park Golf Course, our local professional sports teams, Cal Bears, Northside Travel, Berkeley Ace Hardware, and local restaurants.
Five golden rings
There were some very special guests today. First, we had esteemed representatives from our favorite sister clubs, not to mention the likes of Oakland, Alameda, Albany-El Cerrito, San Leandro, and Hayward-Castro Valley. And of course, there were very special guests and spouses. BUT LAST AND NOT LEAST, we had some very special B. K.'ers that we don't see often, of the likes of L. Iodice and others.
Four calling birds
Well, it seemed like there were four, but was it really two – of the best barkers in the world. Both S. Silveira and J. Rosano traded volleys and vied to finish this auction on time (thereby outdoing our sister club in Oakland last week). Well, needless to say, our venerable auctioneers met and exceeded this amazing challenge, even closing a few minutes ahead of time.

Three French hens
As the Silent Auction tables were winding down, with a fervent frenzy, the Live Auction got off with much anticipation and ado. There were so many
grand prizes, it's impossible to record here. Top prizes included 3 gourmet and exotic dinners hosted by generous Kiwanians, such as an oversized barbeque extravaganza on the Carpenter's deck
(won by J. Egeberg), an Italian gourmet bash at Villa Leonardo  (won by J. Piercy, aka the "Christmas Grumpy"), and the perennial favorite JR's Cioppino Feast (won by D. Leonard). Then there was something that caught a lot of attention, the grand opening of the Paradis Remodeled Kitchen (however, we're not counting that because nobody believed it).
Two turtle doves
A night's lodging and dinner at the City Club (won by K. Euston), and the Jeff Tedford Football (meaning next season will be what this season was supposed to be), won by B. Rosano .

And a partridge in a pear tree!
This year's Holiday Auction may just have been the best ever! Even though so many dedicated members contributed to it, event chair (the amazing) D. Haughin deserves special recognition.
Yes, although many accolades go to many others, as recorded above, it is hereby proclaimed that
Denise Haughin is our special partridge for 2009!

Newsletter 120809

Well, another sparsely attended meeting!  We had to sell 5 left-over meals this week.  Where are
all you Berkeley Kiwanian regulars?  Ed, Borden, Jeff, Linda & Will, Bettye, Bob, and some of
you recent inductees??  Maybe next week??  Brrrr, was it cold today!!!

Today was a real multi-facet meeting.  First, we had both of our ½ Presidents at the head table,
With the "gimp" one doing the actual presiding.  Oh, you didn't know that Roberta broke her
foot again!  Next time you see Frank, ask him how many steps are there in his home.
Anyhow, after lots of introductions, we were able to sing "happy birthday" to a couple of our
attending members, namely Bill & Sandy.  We even acknowledged Circle K's Diane for her
19th b'day.  With B. Rice not in attendance, our viola virtuoso provided our musical back ground.

Reports:
1.       Inter Clubbing----------We had a couple this past week
a.        We had 9 members attending the Oakland Auction on Monday.
b.       We had 8 of us attending Circle K's Banquet Monday evening.
c.        VC is doing her thing at Alameda tomorrow night.

2.      Community Service----------We worked in the YEAH kitchen Monday evening.
             a.     There are 4 dates where we can assist again.  Dec. 19, 20, 21 & 30.  If you
can give a couple hours on any of those dates, let Sandy know, as I'm sure
   she can use your assistance.

Somewhere in here there was a wild and wooly discussion regarding Tammy's
new kitchen.  I believe it was stated that the rehab will start in two weeks,
but the finished product won't be available until sometime in April.  So much
for the annual St. Patrick's Day feast, I guess!

3.       Sponsored Youth------Speaking of April, the Key Club Convention  will be in
Sacramento on April 9, 10 & 11.  They will need help with transportation.  Talk to Phuoc.

4.       Fundraising------------lots of discussion regarding our upcoming Holiday Auction
next week on Dec. 15th.  We need everyone's participation at this event.
This is one our main fundraisers for the year.  Bring yourself, your family & your
friends.  COME ONE, COME ALL?  (as they say)

5.       Other---------We will be passing the hat for our servers holiday gift on the 22nd.
So, bring a little extra cash that day.

Program:

There we were, with pre-cut cards, and tons of stick-ons, fabricating holiday cheer for the
kids at Children's Hospital.   We looked like a bunch of little elves busily creating one-of-
kind cards that will go and hopefully cheer up some very sick kids.  Today we were doing
the outside and then I understand, that the CK guys & gals will be doing the insides with all
sorts of cheery phrases and sayings.

When all of a sudden there we were in an unannounced Board Meeting.  (well unannounced to
this scribe!)  Most of the meeting was contained at the front table, as the other tables were
busily creating these holiday cards.  I didn't see an agenda, so not really sure what transpired.
I do know, this-------------they did:  OK'd the minutes, accepted the budget report, and then went
on to discuss a number of items, all of which was blurred out by the glee and joy of those of us
sticking little things on colored paper.  It will be very interesting to see what the Sec. comes up
with for minutes!!

Don't forget--------------Next Tue. Is our own holiday auction and we need you and your friends
to attend.  This is always a fun event not to be missed.
Also, have you gotten your holiday candy yet?  Denise has lots, including certificates.

Well, that's it for this week.  You were missed, but that's your fault, not ours!  Hope to see lots
of you next week, without fail.  As usual, Sharon and I will be out to empty your wallets anyway
we can.   My screen says it is 42 degrees outside right now and it's only 4 pm.  Gonna be real
chilly tonight, so bundle up.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS
From JR  and the rest of the elves

Newsletter 12109

VERY IMPORTANT
There will be an abbreviated meeting of the Board next Tuesday at the completion of the regular meeting.  Set your schedule to stay with us and see how smoothly your Board handles any controversial subject.  Besides, you will get a make-up for the lunch you will miss on December 29th when the hall will be dark.
------------------------------------------------------
½ Pres. Tammy took the reins (so to speak) today even tho she wasn't due.  Seems as tho the other ½ Pres. did a repeat performance on her leg (broken in the same place).  Our sympathies to you Roberta, but not to Frank who gets to wait upon you but complained at the number of times he had to climb the stairs.  I'm sure that was a H$, Frank!  Great Exercise.

Due to the vacancy at the ticket table, Denise stepped in and kept things straight until Frank showed up.  The rest of  Half-Tam's (that is ½ Tammy's) crew were Bob R. on GBA, Grumpy on invocation and Phuoc on the fine box.  And of all things, Bill C was seated at the head table in honor of all his efforts keeping Berkeley Kiwanis at the top of the Division 2 Interclub ladder.  Well deserved.

Speaking of "deserved" (not); how is it that Jack gets "fine free" for the year.  He didn't

even have to pay for his "Happy Birthday" which was shared with Bill C.  And I guess Bill got away on Jack's dime, so to speak!  On the other hand, have you heard us sing recently!!

Phouc introduced his Guest, Ed, who attends the same church.  That raised another Grumpy question because he claimed that Ed attends HIS (Grumpy's) church every week.  Phouc explained that Ed likes to go to church!

Well, Diane socked it to us again.  She was supported by Mimi, Ken, Lillian, Peter and I think a 6th Circle Ker who showed up a bit late.  Must have had an important conflict like a class!  Their last membership meeting for the Fall is tonight and their banquet will be Monday, 7 Dec. to which we are all invited.  Call Denise if you need particulars.

Sandy paid her $1 for friendly insurance and Secret Greeter Bettye reported that, in fact, Sandy is friendly, but did not shake her hand, so that was good insurance, Sandy.  Frank was grinning at all the good publicity about insurance.

Bill C reported on 3 additional interclubs.  The crew of Frank Bliss, Roberta Bliss,  Evie , VC and BC hit both the DCM  and Hayward/Castro Valley; and VC, BC,

Denise, Bettye, Jack and Bob Skrak (& Joyce) made it to breakfast at Albany/EC.  It looks as though we have credit for 14 interclubs in the first 2 months of the year!

There were comments about F Bliss's bowling prowess at the Circle K outing, but I missed them.  Do you suppose they were positive or negative?

Bettye reported that the monthly birthday "bashes" at the S & W Senior Centers will be combined with a Holiday party at the S Center.  We are all invited.  She also encouraged us to help support Marge's mentoring program at the North Center.  You'll remember that Marge addressed us a couple or 3 weeks ago.  The seniors partner with young learners – not sure who learns the most.

Denise was again advertising the Berkeley Kiwanis "commissary" with lots of chocolate and jam.  Next week the special holiday boxes of Sees will be available, so bring lots of cash to buy those presents for friends and neighbors – what a sweet thought (pun intended).

Sandy introduced Michelle from YEAH to talk to us about the program and thank us for our support.  Michelle claimed she is the volunteer meal coordinator, but certainly gave the impression that she is a very important player in the overall YEAH program.

YEAH  is operated with the cooperation and support of the Lutheran Church of the Cross.  It is basically a program to help youth (18-25) who have grown out of the State Foster
Care program and been thrust out on their

own, often with no preparation to take care of themselves.  There are also a few youth who have been "emancipated" due to family problems and are in the same position.

Shelter with a mat and a blanket is provided for up to 30 (normal is about ¾ men and ¼ women) with dinner and breakfast.  The hall opens at 8 PM and closes at 8 AM.  After dinner there are games and socializing and actual laundry service provided by the volunteers.  Showers are also available.

Michelle pointed out that the program also helps the youth find those other services they need such as counseling, health, and even job preparation.  Funding is not adequate to support a year-around program, so it's mainly November-March, with a little spill-over into October and April, depending upon the weather and funding.  There's no application, as such; just a form the youth must complete which includes their name and their agreement to abide by the simple rules that are necessary to "keep peace".

In answer to one of the several questions, Michelle indicated that the most pressing need is always for warm sox.  Lower down on the list were toiletries such as shampoo, razors, toothpaste and brushes.  Yes, items such as found in hotels are always welcome!

A last minute announcement was made that the December Dine-Out will be held at the Bliss's on Friday, 11 December.

Next week we decorate cards to go with the gifts for kids at Children's Hospital.  That's the one meeting where we don't get fined for talking with our fellow Kiwanians!  Be sure to show up.                                          jp

Not a full house today, but we did have a lot of fun!  VC greeted you at the ticket table, F.Bliss lead us in song, D. Haughin gave a thoughful invocation with "at our house we hold hands"- and we all did & J. Egeberg walked around quite a bit collecting $$$ for various reasons.  ½ Pres. T.Paradis led the meeting; it is interesting to come just to see which ½ Pres. will be in charge!!  Each has her individual style- and they are working so well TOGETHER!!

easy to spot him with his snow white beard as he roams around the room visiting
with everyone.   Good to see you, Ed.
With Gail taking the $$, Tammy opened the meeting with a big smile and her Peruvian
tan!   Mr. "song-man" led us in the anthem and Jack had us reflecting.
We had a nice crowd attending today thanks to a few visitors:  Bruce , Ken & their
Pres. from the Oakland Club (selling tix, of course!) and………..none other than our
Past Pres. (1998) Carol Schilling.  Good to see you, Carol.  Today's honoree at the

Wednesday is Frank's birthday, so we made a stab at the birthday song!

Many, many happy dollars.  Some for Cal's victory,  some for the weather and
some for just being happy!

Rev. Fay introduced our speaker for today:
Ms. Susan Reynolds
Photographer/Writer

She presented  a very colorful power point program entitled "Understanding Native
American People", with loud pow-wow drums in the  back-ground.  (good but loud!)
There were many pictures of  different tribes on different Reservations throughout
Montana & South Dakota and their various activities.  She shared with us her insight
into the life of a Native American in today's world.  She explained how they are
getting back to their roots and cultures now that they can legally do so.
It seems "pow-wows"  (tribal gatherings) are getting more and more popular
throughout the US.  Stanford University host one every year, as does Cal.
Our own Rev. Fay with his wife Margie, spent many years as a Chaplain on a
Reservation.  This was a very informative program.  You missed a good one!!

This missive was brought to you from the office of you ex Secretary—JR

HAVE A NICE DAY!

Newsletter 110309

It was only a single whammy today.  We had a half quart of President.  Pint 1 is or was somewhere in South America and Roberta was the sole President.  The meeting started out normal (more or less) with Frank at the ticket table, Bob Rice leading GBA and Bettye giving the Invocation.  But then we were instructed to refer to the sheet music on the tables (who can read those funny squiggles?) and sing HAIL KIWANIS.  Words by Walter Barber, Music by Clinton R. Morse and arranged by Gene Sullivan.  Not sure anyone in the audience had ever heard of any of them OR the song, but we made a "valiant" effort and hope we are not required to repeat the performance – it will probably only get worse in time.

Just as ½ Pres Roberta was trying to get guests introduced, Zalman Sher of the Alameda Club strolled in (he's still regularly late!).  Roberta was interrupted while talking about the Christmas Auction.  Zalman was sorry that he wouldn't be in town on Dec 15 but wheedled Grumpy into agreeing to bid on some home-made caramels for him.

Anyway, it's time to dig out the auction items for Sharon and Jack to sell on that occasion and plan to be there early and stay late.

Diane of Circle K fame introduced her interclub (Josh, Ben and Tammy) and gave us a run-down on the past week's activities, included a contingent at Cazadero on Sunday.  We were invited to their meeting tonight (Tuesday) at 126 Barrows Hall.  Since it's a bit late when you read this, why not mark your calendar for next Tuesday and visit with them.

There will be a Circle K evening of bowling and the regular Berkeley Kiwanis "Dining Out" on the same Friday evening, 15 November, at the Albany Bowl.  Plan to attend and knock down a few  pins demonstrating just how rusty you are.

A contingent of Berkeley Kiwanians plus Nick Haughin and 15 Circle Kers helped at the Halloween Extravaganza "Imagine That" party at Oakland's Lakeside Center Saturday and a group of the same 2 clubs were up at Cazadero Arts Camp on Sunday to get ready for the winter rains.

The week before was "Paint Salvation Army Kettles" day at Denise's shop and about half the kettles were made to look new.  No, Nick wasn't there, but he stayed home and cooked dinner.  What a guy!  This next Sunday will be the second of two such efforts and should finish the job.  One was in my car today and it looked great.

On Nov. 20, a Friday at 4 PM, the South and West Berkeley Senior Centers will have their "Holiday Celebration" and we are invited to attend and try some of the cake we supply.  That will be at the West Center on the SW corner of Hearst and 6th Streets.

Our RIF distributions went to about 350 Head Start kids last month in support of 9 sites.  Reportedly all went well, but the staffing was a bit light.

Denise still has some of that delicious See's candy for sale so plan to buy some to favor your sweet tooth (or sweetie) next week.

Back to the Holiday Auction on Dec 15.  If you buy your lunch ticket in advance it will be $15 as usual, but they will cost more at the door.  There will be a 50/50 auction again, and those tickets should be available next week.  Get yours while the supply lasts.

Denise has volunteered to store auction (live and silent) items you wish to donate, so call her at work to make an appointment.  PLEASE try to get your donations in early so we don't have such a panic that morning.

The DCM will be Thursday, 12 Nov at the Aiken Senior Center in Castro Valley in conjunction with that club's Home Made Pasta Feed.  All are welcome; see or call the LtGov (that's VC, you know) for tickets.

Speaking of VC; she reported on the status of the Carpenter weight loss contest.  Bill is ahead, being down 9 pounds with VC close behind at -8.  Atta way to go, Bill.

Early Thanksgiving will be celebrated at the Carpenters' in Piedmont (not at the store!) on Nov 20.  All Kiwanians and Circle Kers are invited – you just need to make a reservation with VC.

Next week we will hear from Susan Reynolds whose subject is "Indian Reservations".

Sandy had the YPSO season tickets with her again today, but bemoaned that fact that she had sold none.  That changed, but not by a huge number.  First concert is Saturday, 14 Nov, so you have only one chance more.

There were happy and sad dollars, but the only one I recorded was Fruit Bob.  He is being appointed to the Re-entry Council in San Francisco.  That's "re-entry into society after incarceration".  Sounds like SF has more appointed jobs than even Berkeley.

Bettye introduced our speaker for the day, Marge Essel.  Marge found her "calling" many years ago and became credentialed as a teacher, not only of children but also of adults.  She has concentrated on Intergenerational Education and has been directing that at the North Berkeley Senior Center for some 25 years.  And just so you'll understand that multi-syllable title – it's pretty simple: getting young children to interact with seniors so they both learn.  First the kids learn that the Seniors don't live at the senior center and get to know them and then the Seniors provide the one-on-one tutoring that's so vital to these young people.

Marge was a salaried (part-time) employee but this year's budget problems have taken away all funding for her program.  So, she's still doing it (now for free) and doesn't even have money for books or other training materials.  Not even funds for stipends to the volunteer Seniors.  She's looking for more volunteers to get to know the kids and read to them for a while; then the kids draw pictures of what was read to them.  A session runs from the noon period to about 3 PM, but I didn't catch what days.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.                          jp

Newsletter 101209

We think fall has arrived, with its colorful drifting leaves, brisk breezes and warm/cool days and night!  Halloween is just a few days away, doorways are decorated in ghoulish décor, witches swinging from trees and ghosts appearing at all times from everywhere.  It's a fun time of the year.

Lots of folks were in the dining room today.  Sec. Bliss was at the back desk taking money, issuing directives and smiling all the while.  Maestro B. Rice led us in GBA, accompanied by B. Price with his interesting rendition of the same!  Sec. Bliss gave a short invocation, and Josh Lomeli (Circle K Pres.) carried around the fine box while he was in the room- he rushed off to class at some point.

At the ringing of the bell by ½ Pres. R. Bliss, we immediately welcomed  B. Rice's "good wife Esther" who was visiting with us basically to hear our speaker.  We know she enjoyed the comaraderie of her dining mates as well as the good BCC food!!  We also applauded S. 1.      An interclub took place at the Hayward/CV club with E. Goodman, ½ Pres. Bliss and V & B Carpenter.   Another interclub will take place at both the Circle K meeting this Tuesday evening and at the Division 8 DCM meeting in Napa on Thursday.  More info on those two interclubs next week.
2.      P. Khong had information about Circle K, but this editor did not catch what was said.
3.      D. Haughin promoted her Sees Candy sales and there were some after the meeting.
4.      The Spiritual Aims "committee" (really, we all are a part of that!) wants to keep up with members who are not able to visit with us each week.  Dr. Coe can have visitors and would love to see us!  C. Fitch, we do miss your happy smile each week!
5.      RIF is taking place tomorrow, the 28th.  Nine Head Start sites will be visited, and there will be enough help!  We'll be giving out about 350 books this time around.

Our Circle K was represented by K. Family Chair Diane along with Josh, Ken, Tami & Mimi.  We always have a great group visit us each week!  They were busy with fundraising (scary movie night netted $96 and the concession stand at the CAL game about $600.  They are planning a St. Andrews cleanup, Halloween event, FTC the weekend of Nov. 6-8 and helping at Cazadero on Nov. 1st.

There was an early meeting upstairs outside the bar with some members of the Kollegiate staff.  There is discussion going on regarding how often the "rag" needs to come out, and how it should be formatted.  No decisions are immediate, however, and one good thing which came out of the meeting was getting 2 volunteers to work on our Website.  So now there may be a "Website" committee?  One fact that did arise is the need to get more of us into utilizing the Website.  It is a great tool for information if kept updated properly.
