Newsletter July 29 2008

The room was just bursting with energy with our many guests and CKIers.  Hoping to keep up all that energy, Prez Phuoc starts the meeting with the ding of his bell.  There was D. Wong (that's me) on tickets and kollegiate.  F. Bliss led GBA, instructing the crowd to start on the F key.  I'm not sure which key we ended up on though, probably not a definitive answer really.  Bill Faye led in invocation.  V. Carpenter was on fine, but it wasn't looking like a heavy fine day since even J. Alexander, coming in from Sacramento (2 hours away) was on time.  Prez Phuoc made it very clear, if Jane was on time, no excuses for anyone else.  Lol!* (see glossary)

Guests
We had lots of guests in the room.  One=2 0young lady accompanying J. Piercy looked strangely familiar.  Piercy introduced her as Leslie G, one of last year's scholarship winners!  Leslie gave her thanks and told us that she has been attending school in NYC where her education is well-rounded and full of the artistic and musical inclinations Berkeley Kiwanis is all about.  Our next guest was Gordon, a Kiwanian (former?) from Grand Lake club.  He was introduced as a "super capable organizer" who wanted to link Kiwanis and CKI.  V. Carpenter stood up to introduce herself and her guest, her Kiwanian husband and other things (if you were on instant messenger, I'd say "TMI"*)

CKI
Circle K had another surprising showing with 3 very distinguished members.  Cheriz, Alex, now serving=2 0district positions and Tiffany their MRP chair.  Alex reported fun times at the Bliss' house for their sleepover.  They made tons of quilts, PTP and cut hundreds of tennis balls.  They also invited Kiwanis to join them in their upcoming service projects:

Time:  TBD  (call Alex for info)

District News
Secretary J. Rosano announced some good and bad news.  I don't remember the good news, but the bad was that 3 of 8 registered Kiwanians can't go to district convention.  We've already paid, so who wants in?   More District news as that the Lt. Gov's installation is coming up September.  More information and tickets next week.

Committees
Fundraiser chair V. Carpenter reported that Solano stroll is on, we have our usual spot in front of a very well-kempt state farm and lots of new stuff to sell.  There was a request for sign makers and booth watchers.
Oktoberfest is also upcoming, tickets are on sale now!  (but unfortunately not at the meeting) Virginia reported the masses of people not rushing to buy tickets from her when she presented them at the Oakland club, an interclub they put together in less than 18 hours.  Interclub chair, B. Carpenter, later announced that those who attended were Virginia, Bill, Evie and Evie's sister.  btw* there will be more interclubs with Richmond and Alameda for the same purpose, so let her know if you want in.
Prez Phuoc announced many tennis balls cut at the Bliss' place and future quilting project work days.  D. Wong, paying extra close attention while taking notes for the kollegiate interrupts thinking she heard Birthdays to announce CKIer Alex Chu's Bday.  There were puzzled glances but V.Carpenter led the group in happy birthday for Alex's 21st.
Membership chair D. Wong announced Dine out next Tuesday Aug 5 will be at 7pm at Fat A pple.  That's on the corner of MLK and Rose. CKI invited once more. We will be having a good time fine-dining and thinking about service projects.  Please invite your I-have-a-day-job-otherwise-I-would-be-a-Kiwanian friends.
Social Chair announced upcoming social, week before Oktoberfest!  German food.  We can go to the place no one can pronounce (therefore I couldn't hear or type for you) and have a basis for comparison for when we cook our own brand of German.

An upcoming anniversary was for the Blisses who will be celebrating their 38th year together.  Congratulations!

Auctions:
There are two items up for sale today, a strawberry-peach bread made with love by VC.  The auction began before V.C even finished describing it.  It went to D. Leonard for 25.  Two jars of jelly with all sorts of stuff and mint went to Denise.

:0)   and :0(*  dollars
A quick recall of the happy and sadness had 2 sad leaving early bucks from B. Barnwell and B. Carpenter.  Frank was happy that his house was intact with the exception of one cheap glass.  John had some money for his 55th college reunion which coincided with the lt. gov installation.  Jane had happy money for coming 2 weeks straight!  Sa ndy, Phuoc and John had other happinesses that my handwriting has proved UNRECALLABLE, unlike California governors.

Program:
Our program chair introduced Dignan Bones, a former Oakland Kiwanian and potential Berkeley Kiwanian.  He is from Lifelong medical center and was there to introduce us to this organization.  They are dedicated to serving the Berkeley community by providing affordable care for all who thrive here in the East bay.  The organization has special programs to help support those people who have chronic illness and also does a lot of work to treat patients in a holistic manner.  Staff and patients all love the care they give and receive.  We were even invited to visit the over 60 centers (though some of us do not yet qualify). =2 0Anyone with questions, donations or want to book an appointment can contact the center.

Newsletter July 22, 2008

There was a pre meeting at the bar on the second floor of the BCC, led by Past Pres. Egeberger- attended by Haughin, Carpenter, Carpenter, Pres. Khing Khong, Leonard, Piercy and Piercy (yes, Traudel!!).  Rosano was i n the room but not at the meeting. Plans are underway for our 2nd OKTOBERFEST event- see below for more info!!!!!  We then meandered downstairs to lunch and our infamous Berkeley Kiwanis meeting.

Pres. Khing Khong was in fine form and rang that bell with gusto!  He called on well-traveled D. Wong to lead us in GBA.  One would think she would be well rested, but Pres K.K. had to help her lift her arms to "conduct" the members in song. E. Goodman accepted your cash or check at the ticket table and graciously handed you a lunch ticket, reminding you to pick up your badge.  The invocation was invoked by  B. Lowman.  The poker box was handed to Jessica who carried it around, huge smile on her face!!!

Pres. K.K. welcomed the Hayward/Castro Valley interclub made up by Pres. Bill, "Strawberry" Pat & "Chocolate" Lynne.  This was their second interclub of the day, having att ended Albany/El Cerrito this a.m. where they reported a horrendous comment regarding female LTGs was made by some dual member of Albany/EC and BK.  Hmmmmm.  The purpose of their visit was not to visit with us but to promote their administrative fundraiser to be held August 23rd.

Pres. K.K. then welcomed Circle K- headed up by Alex with Gail, Joe, Cheriz & Rocky – all smiles and busy as ever.  5 members attended the District Board Meeting this past weekend, and there was something about this Friday night 24 hour work party/slumber party with Kiwanians to be at the BLISSFUL home, with  no Rev. Bliss in attendance.  She decided to get out of town fast!!

One hopes F.B. will be there along with a contingent of Berkeley Kiwanians… maybe not overnight but…..

At this point Pres. K.K. welcomed LTG E. Levitch, Past LTG F. Bliss, Past Distinguished LTGs R. Bliss & V. Carpenter.  J. Piercy had to stand up and beg to introduce his lovely lady, Traudel, who joined J.P. at lunch to keep tabs on him, as he was our speaker of the day.  J. Alexander and L. Hannawalt came in late.

UPCOMING

Sept. 14:  Solano Stroll- Save the date.  We'll need help as we always do, and it is a fun day!!  D. Haughin is requesting signups to assist that "long" day. We have received our spot at the Stroll, but don't know yet where it is.  (We assume we have an "in" with the SS committee.)
Sept. 20:  OKTOBERFEST .  As noted above, plans are underway.  A flyer is attached to this email (or may be a separate email). There's no reason not to attend as it's a "bye" week for Cal games.  TICKETS will be out next Tuesday- and chairman J. Egeberger wants to DOUBLE the attendance, so let's get selling!!
Sept. 23:  Installation/Installation of Khong/Haughin.
Think it's a dinner thing – and at the moment it's being held at Chevys in Emeryville.  And yes, just to confirm, it is installation/installation- that's installation of Khong as Immediate Past Pres. and installation of Haughin as Pres. Pres.
Unknown Dates:  Longfellow, Washington and Le Conte work parties being coordinated by J. Piercy.

A very JJJJ birthday to B. Barnwell.  We did sing for him!!  J. Rosano proceeded to auction off VC's strawberry bread and strawberry apricot jam for $30- and Bliss plum jam for $15.  Nice way to up the poker table coffers!!

Alexander and L he has to sit for JP's speech.  Joe J for Hayward/CV "friends" Strawberry and Chocolate who made him who he is today.  Strawberry responded she has J$$ for being here, seeing how handsome Joe is- and how different from the ugly duckling of teenage years!!  R. Bliss J going to Tahoe.  F. Bliss J for tour to Alaska and son and family safely arriving in England.  D. Wong JJ$$ for trip – and 400 Hong Kong $$ buying tea set & tea for holiday auction.   L. Hannawalt happy for visit to Stone Mountain Fabrics.. they'll display quilts and give sewing area for others to come in and help make the quilts.  BK will be advertised.  Surgery for her hubby Bill tomorrow- he is presently off all meds and thus in a bit of pain.  J. Rosano and incoming Pres. D. Haughin made a father/daughter day of it last Saturday, attending the Pres/Secretary training- somewhat enlightening- somewhat redundant! There were more… but this editor got lost, muddled, whatever and stopped writing!!!

Incoming Pres. Haughin was asked to introduce the speaker… she did sa me as "my friend, John Piercy."  (Before that she stated that if you have trouble finding a speaker, look within the club.  There are plenty of folks looking to share parts of their lives!!)

John & Traudel Piercy have recently returned from a cruise in Russia.  John began by telling us that he took 173 pictures, none of which he has looked at- and if he ever prints them he will not bring them to Kiwanis!
We received an abbreviated look at early Russia (Lenin and Stalin) when they needed warm water ports and ways of moving things around.  Due to this they had no real industry and they took a fierce beating in WW1.  At the time of the Gulag (forced labor camps) folks who arrived there never left.  They were put to long days of work with little food (600 calories/day) and no medical care, dying off rapidly- but digging trenches, often by hand, to help create canals, making some forward transition to an industrialized country.

Running short on time, John then shared some of their trip, which started in Moscow with two or three days of sightseeing, then traversing about 700 miles of waterway to St Petersburg.  (The ship was a Russian one, with a Russian crew and very small rooms.) One positive about Moscow is the beautiful metro stations- with lovely artwork, different at each station.  They also visited "The Kremlin."  All touring was done by bus when on land.  Northern Russia is heavily forested, and two of the largest lakes in Euro pe are located along the Neva and Svir Rivers heading towards St. Petersburg.  John stated that Russian food is for the pits, and his tour of the engine room on board ship was one great thing about the cruise.  Thank you, John, for this short tour!

The Pledge was led by JP and BC, and we left at the clang of the bell to enjoy the lovely weather outside.

Newslwtter July 15, 2008

The Greatest Club in Berkeley
Prez Phuoc gracefully presided over a very rambunctious group.   RevBill, with his ever smiling greeting, was in charge of luncheon tickets.  VC led us in a spirited God Bless America.  Je ff prowled the room, collecting money for the FineFineBox.  Evie reverently asked God for his blessing on us "wonderful people willing and eager to help kids".

Guest
BobS proudly introduced his love, his wife:  Joyce.

CircleK'ers
Gail introduced the group—Chino, Amy and Alex—and updated us on their activities.
The District Presidents' Retreat was recently in Santa Barbara.  Included, this year, was a "death march" according to Gail. Miles and miles and paths leading straight up were mentioned.  Their Summer Meeting is tonight (Tuesday).  The District Social is coming up.  July 25 is a Kiwanis family sleepover at the Bliss'—tennis balls, dolls, and quilts will insure little sleep that night!  Who gets the couches and who gets the floor was debated, with no reservations for the couches granted.  July 31 they will be at MLK School working on the edible garden.

Our Activities
Linda updated us on the quilts.  Wow, the progress is impressive:  $1500 grant received, patriotic color fabric purchased, 10 quilts given to the Kiwanis House near Davis, flannels for the backs purchased!  She also unveiled four quilt patterns:  one for each branch of the service: Marines, Army, Air Force, and Navy.  Our Goal:  100 quilts.  The meeting

place for the "quilting" is Denise's loft (aka "the quilting loft").  During the month of August, each Tuesday from 2-5PM will be a Quilt Workshop at The Loft.

There's a Board Meeting at LtGov Ed's tonight (Tuesday).

JohnP noted September 18 we would be shelving "stuff" at LeConte.  He also updated us on projects being organized:  waterproofing athletic room at Longfellow, potential hut building at Washington.

Interclubs
Number 30 was at San Leandro with Roberta, Evie, VC and BC attending
Number 31 was the DCM with Frank, Roberta, Ed, BC, VC present.
And with these completed we have completed our ROUND ROBIN.  Congratulations to all and to Bill for all his organizing and arranging so we could attain this goal.

Fund Raising
Solano Stroll September 21 (Sunday).  Denise has the sign up sheet.  Scribe note:  this is a fun activity; we collect lots of money (hopefully) and get to watch Berkeley stroll by.

Oktoberfest September 20 (yes, September).  A secret planning meeting will be held next Tuesday at 11:30, before our scheduled meeting.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.

The Speaker
Denise introduced Rosemary Mucklow, Director Emeritus of the National Meat Association.

Rosemary has had an interesting life!  She was born in England and immigrated to America, becoming a Naturalized Citizen in 1969.  Before that she had been a civil servant in London and then a Nanny for the four kids of an English diplomat who was stationed in Canada.  After the kids grew up, she came to California to be with her sister.

In 1961 she was employed as a secretary to the head of the Pacific Coast Meat Association.  Among other tasks, they assisted in labor negotiat ions for

the companies in the Pacific Coast Meat Association.  She had tales of her various bosses….
One though suggested she return to school; she did, attaining her Accounting Degree.

Soon she was head of the Association, taking on the President role.  She had challenges: she was a
woman in a man's world; she wanted to "clean up" some gray areas.  She went on to "reshape and rebuild" the organization.  That was 25 years ago.

She is proud of the organization and proud she is the "grand old lady" of the organization (now called, through mergers, etc. the National Meat Association).

This was an interesting talk.  She had us all mesmerized with her tales.

CONCLUSION
Charlie led us in The Pledge of Allegiance.  Phuoc closed the meeting.

Where Have All the Members Gone?
A rather sparse crowd today due to an alleged Interclub to the San Leandro Club, involving the likes of B. & V. Carpenter, R. Bliss, E. Goodman (and whoever else?). The question is, were they really there? (Of course, they were!)
The A-Team remained to run the meeting: B. Rice led the vocals (featuring high-decibel outbursts by B. Price), a thankful word from B. Fay, the Fine Box mishandled by D. Leonard, and S. Hearn trying to keep track of ticket sales.
Two guests were recognized as acquaintances of the program s peakers, and while the reigning LTGOV was lacking, he was adequately represented by Immediate Past LTGOV F. Bliss (but why did the love-of-his life desert him for San Leandro today??) He did make the substitute announcement that a DCM will be held this Thurs, 6 p.m. at the San Leandro Hospital (no free IV's this time, however).
Speaking of the Circle K
Prez PK summoned Alex to the podium but admonished him to speak in a LOW VOICE (in theory to minimize feedback from the antique microphone we use). Alex cooperated by trying to speak in a very LOW VOICE. (There was no feedback, but does that really prove this hare-brained theory?)
Ø      Last weekend they volunteered at 4th of July festivities at the San Francisco Marina
Ø      They will attend this week's DCM but hope that they don't outnumber Kiwanians
Ø      This Friday volunteering at the SF Literary Fair

Ø      Retreat coming up in Santa Barbara (and made an appeal for extra tents due to a shortage)
Ø      Another service project Wed at 8 p.m.
Ø      Three of them will provide honored representation at the International Convention coming up on  August 6
Ø      And lastly (much too late), he recognized that our favorite Gail was present today as the District K-Family Chair! (Hi-i-i-i Gail!)
Upstaging?
Then we had our own announcements and tried our best to one-up the good ol' Circle K.
Ø      B. Lowman is heading up the Vera M. Casey diaper drive
Ø      P. Khong announced that a trip to the "quilting room" is coming up soon
Ø      D. Leonard announced that, not one but two types of entertainment books will be on sale this year: "EcoBooks + the old traditional one – including sales at the Solano Stroll.
Ø      A RIF distribution is coming up soon, but we need VC (in San Leandro today)for details
Ø      F. Bob announced that he is hard at work to expand Interclub opportunities
Ø      No Membership report because our Chair happens to be in China
Ø      J. Egeberg announced once again that the first committee meeting for Oktoberfest 2008 is still coming up soon. P. Khong

suggested a visit to a new German restaurant in Albany would be in order…
Happy and not so Sad
v     Prez PK & Sec'y Rosano auctioned off two high-priced specialty jams carefully crafted by R. Bliss.
v     Once again, the same Prez PK confessed that his very own birthday is coming up on July 11 and offered a large check of an undetermined amount
v     F. Bliss was very happy about spending the Fourth at Tahoe and an upcoming Alaska cruise
v     P. Khong was very sad about a 37-year-old friend who passed away recently
v     B. Fay was happy about Sec'y Rosano being on the job for about 20 years (what's that all about?? – no one else is), and was also pleased to witness the Cal band in Pleasanton
v     T. Paradis offered a large check ($$??) for an upcoming exciting trip to Romania (really?), a forgotten birthday, and then ran out, leaving early
v     J. Alexander walked in late and paid the fee, because she was in Georgia (so what?)
Another BOSS?
J. Rosano introduced our program which was about a wonderful organization called BOSS (Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency).  Jane started off and then turned it over to Executive Director Boona Cheema: "Let us return the kindness by inviting you to our house," which is the Ursula Sherman Village in Berkeley (@ Fourth & Harrison). The Village consists of transitional housing, with a goal of permanently moving folks off the streets. Through advocacy, finding and providing jobs, and housing, they have successfully served over 2,000 people in the last year. Both Jane and Boona told of several heart-warming success stories and showed a video of more. Lastly, they suggested that

Berkeley Kiwanis might do a joint service project with them. Their greatest needs are cleaning supplies, clothing, school supplies…A very worthwhile proposal.

Newsletter July 1, 2008

We are finally seeing our sun shine through the overcast skies- perhaps the signs of summer will become more evident as the days pass by.

Pres. Khing Khong tried to get his fellow Berkeley Kiwanians to rise without sounding the gong; however he was gently admonished by a DPLTG (not vc) that no one had to rise until the gong had sounded.  Thus, the gong was gonged and we did rise!   Pres K.K. then called upon our beloved B. Rice to lead us in The Star Spangled Banner.  All this editor can say is that it ended well!!  Rev. R. Bliss gave a longish invocation thanking for a variety of wonderous things including the red tablecloths/black napkins which reminded her of Harvard and another someone of Stanford.  No more to be said on that subject!!  B. Skrak  was assigned the fine box; and he did a fine job filling up the "poker table".

It was a pleasure having C. Fitch's son, Robert, join us for our meeting.  He was here from Santa Clara to take his dad to a doctor's appointment.  Also present was LTG E. Levitch.  He apparently drove himself today.

We are 99.9% sure of having Circle K members present, and summer shows no downward trend in that area.  Alex, Gail, Max, James & LTG Cheriz all came- they and their fellow comrades are engaged in many activities no matter what time of the year.  We even learned that cooking lessons are going on and kick boxing??  They are active with a group of children at Rosa Parks School among other things.

UPCOMING

July 1: TONIGHT!!  Dine Out at Bobby G's on University Ave. across from McD's…  There will be a guest there…  along with many Circle Kers.
July 8:  There will be an interclub going to San Leandro K. for lunch.  If you want to go.. call BC.

July 10:  DCM w/ LTG E. Levitch (at the hospital??).
Aug.15-17:  District Convention in Anaheim.  Some may carpool together to save gas and room fees!!
Sept. 14:  Solano Stroll- Save the date.  We'll need help as we always do, and it is a fun day!!
Sept. 20:  OCTOBERFEST.  Plans are underway and chair J. Egeberg says he'll be having a committee meeting soon.  There's no reason not to attend as it's a "bye" week for Cal games… so you are free to come!!!!!
Pres.

In between these things, think about getting down to the quilting room at D. Haughin's office M-F while she is there…  there is work you can do solo or with a friend!

NOTES OF INTEREST
YPSO:  if you have money to turn in, please do it soon so the books can be closed on that event.
TENNIS BALLS:  there are hundreds over at the Bliss house…  whenever you feel in the mood- drive over and cut up a few!!  We are getting more requests from schools for them.
RIF:  no response yet from Head Start.  But we will have a distribution in the near future.
INTERCLUBBING:  none this week but see above re going to San Leandro.
THANK YOU: from scholarship winner Lea Cohen.  This reminded Pres. K.K. that we have a scholarship winner who comes to lunch almost every week (Gail), and scholarship winner parents who are active in BK (Blisses).
DINE OUT:  with D. Wong out of town for two months, we'll have Pres K.K. in charge of dining sites- so think about August- where might you like us to meet??  What about a Sat. breakfast before a project or lunch after a project?  We miss you, G. Maxe!

JJJJLJJJJLJJJJLJ$$$$
There were plenty.  LTG E. Levitch L that Jessica will be out of K. lunch for a couple of weeks, but J that she is getting accounting lessons.  VC delighted family attending Alameda County Fair tomorrow- when "old folks" get in free and you can get regular tickets for $7 each if you are a member of Triple A.  Just hope the sun comes out!!  D. Haughin L  about an employee being injured in a car accident.  E. Goodman J to be back after being in Connecticut for a couple of weeks.  C. Fitch J his son could join him today.  J. Egeberg gave many J$$ for his past 5 week vacation which included cancelled flights, lost baggage, and most of all 5 missed Kiwanis meetings.  J. Rosano is just plain J that he can be here each Tuesday!!  Pres. K.K. J for 4th of July weekend.  He also reported that Sandra of Circle K got engaged this past weekend.

YES! There were celebrations today, but singing was not allowed. "They" said it was time allotment… we all know what that means..  Anyway:  Pres K.K.'s birthday is the 11th, and B. Barnwell's is the 24th.  There are two anniversaries on the 11th- B. Rice and Esther (19 years) and J. Asher and Kim (??? Years).  No $$$ collected for singing or not singing…  BOOOO.

J. Rosano auctioned off some outstanding goodies.  D. Haughin brought more home grown love from her garden.  White corn, tomatoes and "zucchini daddy" went to VC for a handsome fee- and the corn will be LOVED by their (vc and bc) grandson!!  VC's homemade plum jam (handpicked plums from an employee's garden tree) went to E. Levitch.

Our speaker was Christi Tuleja from the organization Through The Looking Glass.  TLG is a disability community-based nonprofit organization started in 1982.  They provide relationship-based services for families in which a child, parent or grandparent has a disability.  TLG is also the National Resource Center for Parents with Disabilities and is nationally known for resources, research and training on parenting with a disability.

More than 80% of TLG's staff has personal or family disability experience.  The overall goal of the program is to enhance all aspects of the development of eligible family members, providing mental health and developmental services.  TLG also has an ABC Lending Library, an adaptive Baby Care Equipment Lending Library for Parents with Physical Disabilities.    Caregivers have found that using this special equipment

has made baby care more satisfying and allowed for more choices in their baby care roles.  These items available "on loan" are designed by occupational therapists at TLG, and are designed to make baby care easier, decrease fatigue or pain, and reduce the chance of secondary disability or injury.

Another point of interest is the development of the Ed Roberts Campus, to be located very close to the Ashby BART station.  The Ed Roberts Campus mission is to ensure that people with disabilities can live independently and without discrimination.  It will be a national and international model dedicated to disability rights and universal access.  Construction on the Ed Roberts Campus will begin in 2008.

This is a very interesting program and certainly a great service to our Bay Area community.  Thank you, Christi!

Our pledge was led by Circle Ker Max, the gong was gonged by PKK- and we meandered out into the gorgeous sunshine- for what hopefully was the remainder of a great day for each and every one of us.  We missed you if you were unable to come.  We HOPE to see you soon!
