On the 43rd Foggy Summer Day in a Row

To start with, it was good to see J. Piercy for the first time in a while. He wasn't quite so grumpy, given that Traudel is doing much better. Then, we had quite a slick squad trying to run the meeting: R. Bliss playing Prez, V. Carpenter selling tix, F. Bliss conducting, J. Piercy thanking, and D. Leonard collecting.

V. Carpenter introduced some special guests: her very own in-laws Mike & Jane, whose son is the same one we already knew was in Iraq (who didn't know that?).

Secret Greeter B. Carpenter couldn't nail anybody since D. Leonard and S. Hearn bought the reasonably-priced insurance and J. Rosano didn't

contribute anything because he is evidently fine-free for the rest of this century.

A Distinguished Circle

Service VP Diana introduced Mimi, Sally, Chris, Peter (Lt Governor!), Nina. Since it was sorta like a Finals Week last week, there wasn't much going on, other than a regular meeting. However, they have lots to look forward to: the Dine Out this Friday (aka "Archive Throw-away"), @ 6:00 @ the Blisses. Next, a district fundraiser on Aug 19-21, and lastly, the annual Garage Sale @ Berkeley Ace
Hardware on Sept 4-5 (competing with Labor Day, Cal home football game, etc- a busy weekend!).
Need donations now! Contact Sooyun Choi @ (951) 398-9891 or latebyoneminute@gmail.com.

Mimi then gave us a confidential report on her escapades with certain individuals last week celebrating her 21st Birthday! Can't be repeated here, but she did manage to get carded and was sooooo excited.

Extra Special Goings-On!

B. Carpenter announced a great interclub last Friday at the inauguration of the new Club in Oakley (Charter Night!). He also announced that an upcoming outing to San Leandro will complete another Round Robin this year. Way to go!!

P. Khong announced the details of upcoming Fall Conventions for Circle K and Key Clubs.

F. Bliss announced a DCM this Thursday at the Carpenters.

J. Egeberg said he couldn't remember when the greatest OKTOBERFEST in the world will take place…but we found out: OCTOBER 2, 2010. Put that on your calendar right now (AND that is, yes indeed, a BYE in the Cal Golden Bears football schedule.)

F. Bliss also announced (for the 2nd time) the "Archive" event this Friday. D. Leonard, S. Hearn, P. Khong, R. Bliss, and F. Bliss are signed up. If you care about Berkeley Kiwanis heirlooms,
souvenirs, etc, you'd better be there to make sure they're not thrown out!

J. Piercy said that the Washington School Project is on the move again, with a meeting set this week at the project site.

Prez R. Bliss reminded us that the cans, with slots in the top, on the tables are for the drinking water project in underprivileged countries. So pull out all your change now for a good cause!

The Prez also reminded us of important year-end and year-beginning events coming up –
·         Hayward/Castro Valley is having "Games in the Garden" in Carol's Backyard on August 28 from 4-7 pm, only $25. Call Carol to RSVP @ 538-7585
·         Installation of Lt Governor Mary is on Sept 11 @ Elio's
·         Other club installations: Hayward/Castro Valley-Sept 14 evening; Alameda-Sept 24 lunch; Richmond-Sept 29 evening
·         AND the grand finale: Berkeley-Oct 5 evening @ Pyramid Brewery!

On a Special Day

Leah was another very special guest who won a scholarship from us in recent years and is thriving away at UCLA. She was accompanied by boyfriend Coulter, all the way from University of Illinois. Leah will graduate next spring, take a break for a year or two to do volunteer work, and then head off to law school. Way to go!

On a Happy Day

It was such a beautiful day that there were too many Happy $$$ to be mentioned here, except to note P. Khong's happiness to be on the USS Hornet outing last weekend. Thanks to D. Haughin for setting up the tour + lunch – fun had by all.

Where in the World??

·         D. Haughin is on jury duty
·         C. Ungson is doing some serious job hunting
·         B. Rice is not feeling well – send him your best wishes
·         W. Rogers is busy, busy, busy
·         T. Paradis is in China
·         B. Fay is on a car tour of the U.S.

A Sparkling Program

Elena and Pam came to us today from "Starting Blocks." This is a new program to address inequality in access to student resources, and to help provide a quality education to everyone. They explained the aspects of their program in a well-done slide show. How can Kiwanis help? The main thing would be to sign up to become a MENTOR today. Another thing we can do is donate $$ or supplies. Check it out on www.ourstartingblocks.org.

Summer Doldrums
Seven Kiwanians and Five Circle K'ers gathered for a quiet summer meeting.  Later we played the game, where are our members?  If you can, please call one member who wasn't there to be sure they're okay. Average = 2.5 BK'ers per table.

RB presided.  Lunch money was on the honor system with PK collecting off and on.  PK also led the song.  FB provided harmony.  It sounded pretty good in fact.  JR invocatificated.  DH & FB fought over who would introduce our guest, Zach Sorgen, 2008 BK Foundation Scholarship Winner.

Circle K Makes us Proud (Again)
Diana Tran introduced Internationally acclaimed Circle K members Chris Hung, Spirit/Social Chair; Sally, MRP Chair and origami maker-extraordinaire; BK luncheon regular Nina Yang. DT reported on 24 hour service. Social at the Marina, Berkeley Kite Festival  Info Booth (cold but fun); Tennis Ball cutting.  They have eight going to Cal-Nev-Ha in Reno.  BTW, MRP stands for Membership Recognition Program.

Interruption
LH (Linda Hannawalt) arrived waving a big check, so she escaped the late and secret greeter fines.
USS Hornet this Saturday
DH is putting on a fundraiser this Saturday at 10 a.m. on the USS Hornet.  Sixteen are going.  Money was already due, and the deposit check cut today.  You'd have to make a BIG contribution to show up without a reservation at this time. JE questioned how if reservations had to be in a week in advance and we're making the deposit today…how is that working?  A: We're special! If you need a map, call Denise.

HB & Late Arrivals
EJ got the Birthday song sung.  Oakley Kiwanis Installation is this Saturday Evening.  Looks like an interclub of DH, RB, FB, BC & VC. DL arrived late, Mimi of Circle K arrive late, but got HB sung for her.  SH arrived late but carried the checkbook.  Total now 10 Kiwanians.

QUIZ
Where is everyone?  TP lost a key person just before a big trip.  On the 24th both ½ Pres's will be otherwise engaged, so DH presides.  JP is taking care of Traudel.  Who else is missing?  Call!

HANNAWALT REPORTS
Linda hasn't been letting the grass grow under her feet.  No siree.  She provided our quote of the week:  "Starting a non profit is not a non-profit activity"

Linda has done 192 quilts year to date.  27 went to WWII Vets and one a week to Homeless prenatal moms.  She also teaches at several locations throughout San Francisco.  She makes sure her students give one of every three quilts to the community.  She has noticed that when quilts are made for others, the pride of the makers increases.

Linda connected with Mothers Against Senseless Killing (MASK) in a quilt supply shop.  Wow.  That led to being on the podium with the Mayor of Richmond and touting Kiwanis.  150 fleece scarves were made yesterday alone for St Anthony's Dining room to be given at Christmas.  We're exicted and proud of the fact that BK's Linda does so much.

We're all wishing Bill H successful surgery on Tuesday.

Happy / Sad $
PK enjoyed a birthday raffle. Target fun.   DL brought back a spoon for DH
DH acknowledged the gift
FB enjoyed the Ahwahnee with RB

Bear poop was sold $20 to Evie!
S'mores didn't sell, so went home w/ RB.
SH mourned the loss of a good friend.
The JP report is that there are good and not so good days with Traudel.  BKFoundation meets there tonight.

PROGRAM
JR introduced our speaker Zach Sorgen, BHS grad in 2008 now going to Vassar.  He described it as a small liberal arts school where he is majoring in sociology.  He particularly enjoyed the introduction the Sociology, his Criminology course and the study of Russian author Vladimir Nabakov (author of Lolita).  Zach is really interested in music.  He has already taken a course in the history of jazz, Composition, Musicianship skills & jazz piano.  He's interned at a record label, promoted, produced, acted (in Rent) and worked as Musical Director in "Spelling Bee".  He enjoyed working on relief for Haiti by working the open mic. One regret is his one "B"

Zach's had 38,000 U-Tube hits for an album production he did with some Berkeley High buddies going under the name "Thirst Busters".  Their signature song is entitled "So There".  It describes a shy high schooler having a crush but not knowing how to express interest in his object of affection.  See the URL

CAZ UPDATE
JR reports Caz looks beautiful.  Last weekend's concert was fabulous.  Anita did a great job on the donor's lunch.  Mark October 24 on your calendar to "Take Down" the camp.  Free Lunch provided.
