It was a night of celebration at Chevys of Emeryville.  The installation of Immediate Past President Khing Khong and Incoming President B.F.E. Denise Haughin went off without a hitch- and was a well attended and loud event!!

We enjoyed the company of many guests, friends and fellow Kiwanians.  Sitting LTG E. Levitch was spotted in the group- along with incoming LTG B. Farhbach.  Many wives of BK Kiwanians we always love to see- Traudel Piercy, Esther Rice, Joyce Skrak and Margie Fay accompanied their husbands- John, Bob, Bob and Bill.  Incoming President B.F.E. Denise brought a huge contingent of her family including her husband Nick, mom Jean, brothers Ken and Brian, her sister Debbie- and, her dad Jack R.  There was an interclub from Albany El Cerrito including Bill K'Berg and Karen Euston who was accompanied by her niece Carla.  Numerous of our own BK Club were there, with some members we see little of, including George Maxe and Tony Ng- who brought his girlfriend.   Our newest soon to be incoming member, Dan Parnell, also attended. There were a fair number of Circle Kers also, including Gail and  Cheriz.  I spotted Bob Barnwell, Past DLTG Frank Bliss sans RB, Jane Alexander, Charlie Fitch, Linda and Bill Hannawalt, Evie Goodman , B. Price and Sandy Hearn.  Debra Wong snuck in late!!  Now, if you came and I missed your name

I'll put in a sad dollar for each one I missed + a happy dollar that each one of you I missed actually was there!!!  Those JLs will go into B.F.E. Denise's fine box at her first meeting!!).

The "evening" was called to order by Pres. Khing Khong who was advised that he does indeed have one more meeting to conduct on Sept. 30th.  He then called upon Bob Rice to lead us in song.  Rev. Bill Fay gave a longish invocation asking for blessings all around.  All guests were introduced and then we adjourned for dinner.  The food was great- and more appeared when Incoming Pres B.F.E. Denise "requested" it!  (We have a strong, independent new Pres.!!)  I noticed lots of margaritas and just a few glasses of wine being consumed.

As Pres. Khing Khong recalled the "event" to order he proceeded to thank the club for all the support since his installation in the park a20year ago.  He was grateful for the new projects that have come about, for new members, for enthusiasm and the attitude that "yes, you can do it!!" and for the fact that he survived it all.

He gave out many thoughtful gifts to members of his board.  Those could be listed here, but I shall refrain except that he gave his replacement a book entitled "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff" and promised to support her as she has supported him all year long.  Special thanks went to Bettye Lowman.  We missed you, Bettye, and have you in our prayers on the loss of your sister this past week.  As well, he thanked his boss, Frank Bliss for letting him sneak out of the office early so often,

Linda Hannawalt for the quilt project, and Bill Carpenter for the interclubbing this year.

He then called on Past DLG Virginia Carpenter to do the honors of installing as past many folks and installing as present many folks.  She stood, wearing a long sleeved shirt which stated "DENISE For President, 2008."   What a delight for VC to be
able to order some people around again after all these years!

When calling upon outgoing Directors of the 2007-2008 year, Evie Goodman, Duane Leonard, and Virginia Carpenter- a proxy for VC in the form of Bill Carpenter in purple wig stood up.  Now that was a sight to behold.  Not to be outdone, when calling upon the 2008-09 year Officers, Roberta Bliss (incoming Vice Pres) was seen in proxy by someone near and dear to her (Frank Bliss).

At any rate, the appropriate outgoing and incoming officers and directors have been installed, and s o the BK club was without leadership for only about 2 minutes.   Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!

Incoming Pres B.F.E. Denise received her gavel, and was pinned by her Mom- with her Dad standing alongside.  She was smiling all the while… and then delivered a few remarks about membership (we're all on the membership committee), additional fundraising things- See's Candy  for all holidays, peanuts, and a new BK Cookbook.  We will find a suggestion box at the ticket desk- she is requesting that we put in suggestions, and that "complaints" will not be accepted in that box (please see her if you have a complaint)!!!  In other words- let's all think POSITIVE!!!!!  And let's REALLY work on membership and b ecome the largest club in our Division once again!!!

Our super secretary Jack Rosano the proceeded to give out a couple of awards.  LTG Ed Levitch received a Life Membership Award- and he was speechless for the first time in his life.  Pres. Khing Khong received a two night stay at the Silver

Legacy in Reno as his thank you for a wonderful year of leadership.

JR then presented his daughter, Incoming President B.F.E. Denise with her fine box.  It's a wonderful fire extinguisher emptied of its contents- with a nice hole cut in the side for all of us to drop
in our fines, JL$$$, or whatever to help Denise reach her goal for the year.   The first $$$ in were for the purchase of the DENISE For President, 2008 shirt which was purchased by her hubby, Nick, for $20.

Our new Pres. B.F.E. Denise rang the bell for adjournment and then was told she made a mistake- so she rang the bell again and then asked for the Pledge to be led by herself!!  She then rang the bell again… and we are off to a NEW YEAR- after one more meeting headed up by soon to be Past President Khing Khong.

We are Happy; We are Sad.
--NewBob:  Happy for the CircleK'ers and Deborah for their expertise in bringing folks in during the Solano Stroll.  Sad, 'cuz we do not have a Kiwanis banner.  He put in a $100 check to get the "ball rolling".
Jack:  Happy for Sunday and all the familiar folks waving to him.
Phuoc:  Sad for Betty Loman and reminding us to sign the sympathy card for the recent loss of her sister. Sad for the Golden Bears.  Happy for the Kiwanis turnout at the Solano Stroll and for the continuation of the Spirit Social at Circle K that he had instigated long ago.  Sad for not working Monday.
Frank:  Grumpy 'cuz Phuoc did not work Monday.
Josh:  Happy for the Spirit Social and the success of the first Circle K meeting.
Denise:  Happy for her Circle K T-Shirt and for the success of=2 0the Solano Stroll.
Linda:  A looooong drawn out time-filler that included her mom's stroke, her dad deciding to get her Mom out of the hospital on the designated date (when he found out the costs), a motorcycle cop and her father who ran through a stop sign following the ambulance to the hospital, a first grandchild at Lowell who joined Key Club, sales of quilts, buying German stuff for auction, etc. etc. etc.
Joe: Happy for the Kiwanis Interclub at the first meeting.
Ed:  Stating he could not match Linda, just referred to "all the good and bad stuff" over the last couple of weeks.

With no speaker, the rest of the meeting was spent in discussing and organizing NewBob's suggestion of a banner.  Linda volunteered (thank you Linda) to form a Committee of Visibility with NewBob.

Sandy suggested we needed a pamphlet.  (Scribe comment, Jeff and Tamara and George have done ones in the past and might have some copies of those).

Deborah received a compliment for the great pictures on the Solano Stroll Booth (great job, Deborah).
=0 A

Linda suggested getting those pictures and getting "a looping thing going" on our web.  Joe volunteered to do it if we get the pictures to him.

Thanks, NewBob, for getting us focused on "visibility" through the banner (and hence sparking other ideas!).

An Inspiring Intro
Today's motley crew consisted of S. Hearn trying to keep the receipts straight and sell tix, too, B. Rice belting out a blaring banter, J. Piercy invoking an inspirational word (on a moment's notice),  & D. Wong on the fearsome finebox. (Ed. Note: Part of what JP was thankful for was the long-awaited return of the cooling fog – hey, I'm not sure everyone in the room agreed with that – what's wrong with a little SPF-139 sunscreen?)
A Whole Lotta Circle K
Another streaming multitude of energetic college students was present today, headed up by Monica, our very own K Family Chair, Alex, District Secretary, and goodol' Gail, District K Family Chair.
Monica proceeded to tell us what a success that last weekend's Garage Sale was, netting over $750! And she told us of a couple other events they managed over the same weekend. Coming up: this Friday at 5:30 they will be doing the Big C Hike, Saturday from 7:00 – 3:00 Need a Change Day in San Francisco, ending up on Sunday with their own Berkeley Kiwanis at the Solano Stroll. Last but not least, tonight is their first General Meeting of the Year  (145 Dwinelle). P. Khong asked for folks to join him to make a great big Interclub there! By the way, Monica was sporting, and m odeling, a brand new signature Berkeley CK T-shirt. You can get one yourself at the meeting tonight, or contact her anytime for a very special price of a measly $14.

Lots of Our Very Own
The Lt. Governor Installation last Saturday was a "rousing success," boasting attendance of over 90 people! Our very own E. Levitch, who was duly de-installed (save us all),  re ported on it to us today, live in prime time. He claimed that, for the life of him, he couldn't figure out why anyone was thanking him, rather than ourselves (guess what, Ed?). Anyway, it was further reported that the food was plentiful and wonderful, such that PrezPK claimed that he couldn't even eat all of his steak (since this is unheard of, we will discount his entire story).
Then there's our very own Club Installation on Tues, Sept 23 at Chevy's (6:00 social, 7:00 dinner & formalities, $25 at the door). D. Haughin gave the outward impression today that she is still willing to take that foreboding oath.
The excitement keeps elevating for our 2nd annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept 20, starting at 6:30 at St. Mary Magdalene Church. J. Egeberg, P. Khong & J.Piercy were out in force at tables covering all the escape routes from the church after each mass this weekend. They sold a bunch mo re tix and will be out there next weekend for the grand sales finale. Next, T. Paradis is heading up the last-minute blitz of our sister clubs, by attending tomorrow's meeting of the Alameda Kiwanis Club. D. Wong will cover the Oakland Club next Monday – volunteers are still sought for Hayward-CastroValley, San Leandro, Richmond/El Cerrito. After all, it's already going to be the biggest and best ever. Lastly, S. Hearn produced some very nice-looking 50/50 tickets for the big raffle, for sale at a bargain price of only $10 each.

The warm-up pre-event at Speisenkammer Restaurant in Alameda was also a great success with a total of 8 BK'ers in attendance.
S. Hearn reminded us that another wonderful RIF Distribution is coming up on Sept 24 – 25 and passed a sign-up list.
J. Piercy announced a delay in the Longfellow drainage and library projects, alleging something about estimates from his well-acclaimed "architect" coming in over budget BUT mentioned again the kudos received from the O-F Bulletin Board project at Le Conte School.
Speaking of Key Clubs, Berkeley High has been quite active, as reported by D. Haughin. They are doing a shoreline cleanup on Sept 20 and are psyching up for a big presence at the RTC on Sept 27-28 at Camp Jones Gulch. Drivers are needed – sign up now! (PS, a report on what the other club, Oakland Tech, has been up to is due soon).
D. Wong provided a well-received Membership Report that Dan Pannell has submitted an application for membership (cheers emanated from the back of the room!)
Speaking of Solano Stroll, did we mention that our seamy Sec'y J. Rosano plans to wave to all the admiring crowd from atop a fancy fire truck (don't come just for that). He's been practicing his wave, you know (it's a little bit like Ms. Palin's).
Speaking of our trusty Sec'y J. Rosano, he had two other items of important business:
1. The roster was passed around for  updating. Correct those mis-typed email addresses now!
2. GENERAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP: Changes to the By-Laws were distributed and discussed two weeks ago, and a summary was placed in the Kollegiate with two weeks notice for a vote today. It was moved, seconded, and carried (Piercy/Haughin) that the changes were adopted and the Secretary authorized to report them to International.
Other Important(?)  Stuff
Secret Greeter B. Skrak caused 3 members to buy insurance (E. Goodman, D. Haughin, D. Leonard but didn't manage to nail anyone else.
E. Levitch celebrated BD # 85 with pride and dignity and hoped he would be in as good shape as B. Rice when he gets there. This prompted an

emotional competition about age, retirement, etc, -- not to be repeated. Nevertheless, he got a HBD tribute that he never wanted, but thought he did.
HS Dollars ETC
·        D. Haughin, D. Leonard, E. Levitch, B. Fay offered big bucks for very important things.
·        J. Egeberg had big ones that the Golden Bears seemed to have beaten the point spread last weekend (by about 50 points) and for the prospect of such a great Oktoberfest coming up
·        J. Piercy used an excuse last weekend about a very honorable Alumni event at the oldest univ in Calif. (he's given up on his previous excuse involving poison oak)
·        B. Rice was proud to be honored again at the Calif Academy of Sciences in S.F.
A Substitute Program
Our planned program (a Mr. G. Maxe)  was forced to cancel at the last minute. A very good natured D. Wong jumped up at PrezPK's appeal, and talked briefly about her recent trip to China, and in particular to visit her father in Hong Kong. We noted very quickly that her father seemed to be a "funny guy" and his daughter a "funny gal." Then she got into Language as a topic, particularly, English vs the local dialect of Chinese.
Then, out of the blue, she created a game (language, that is), with 3"x5" cards strewn on the floor. Yeah, well there were two teams, the favored being E. Levitch, D. Haughin, B. Fay, T. Paradis (against the crack team consisting of slightly younger folks). Well, not many others in the room really understood the game, but we observed the following:
1. B. Fay went into battle, yelling out "Hoy, hoy, hoy…" which seemed to work every time.
2. The final competition every time was the ol' rock, paper, scissors, which B.K. seemed to wi n every time.
So, although not announced at the time, for the record, it appears that BK trounced the competition.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNPAID NOTICE
"Over the Berkeley Hills" home for sale . Live next door to Grumpy in a 3BR, 2BA home in the snooty Park Hills Area.  Large "rumpus" room downstairs w/half bath and pool table. Ideal for Kiwanis Parties.  Views of Tilden Park. $750K.  Call for Details
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's his last month, and Prez Phuoc still is not collecting sufficient fines.  If he's going to make it up by October 1, watch your wallets!  Today started off in disorganized usual fashion with no one prepared for anything.  However, tickets were sold by Volunteer Roberta, GBA was led by Bob Rice and Bill Fay gave a pithy invocation.  It is VC's month but she is away on another cruise and no plans were made for the meetings.  We had a great last-minute speaker today, but more on that later.

We had a club guest – scholarship winner Richard Gong, formerly of Albany High, but now attending Harvard dropped in to tell us "whas happening".  (Isn't that how they speak back there?)  JP introduced Richard with the comment that after he had been awarded the scholarship we "lost touch", but tenacious Grumpy found him.  Richard has taken a bit of time off to gather himself (translated: "earn money") and plans to get back to his Junior year "soon".  He is

studying computer science (duh) and investments and noted that his two "heroes" are Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.  Not so much for their accumulation of wealth, but what they do with it.  Sounds like Richard would be a good Kiwanian.

A couple of familiar faces were seen at the back table and Debra introduced them as Miguel, a former BCKer and Dan ?.  Is he "the Guy"???  Anyway, application action was seen at that table after the meeting.

Monica was called up to introduce her UCB Circle K compatriots, and she identified Joe, Gail and Alex, all very important members and also very familiar.  Of course, Grumpy had problems (has problems?) with their names, but then that's normal.  There's a very important "first meeting" of the UCB's best service organization in Dwinell Hall Room 145 next Tuesday, and Kiwanians are especially invited.  A large crowd of potential members have signed up and apparently the current officers don't think the presence of us old folks would discourage any of them.  And, Monica gets extra points today, she didn't "punt" to Joe or Alex at all.  She's now the "in charge" Kiwanis Family Chair.

There are some important dates in the near future calendar.

TONIGHT (if you receive this by e-mail on Wednesday) there will be an informal meeting of Debra's group at the "Cactus", top of Solano Ave. at 6 PM.

THIS FRIDAY evening the often post-poned BK Social at Speisekammer in Alameda is scheduled, and if you aren't on Duane's list but want to attend, call him.

THIS SATURDAY evening the Division 2 current LtGuv will become "Past" and the new LtGuv will be installed.  It's too late to make a reservation, but I'll bet Jack could squeeze you in. We haven't seen Ed in a while, but maybe his back will permit him to make that event.

SEPT. 11, 12 and 13 we hope to accomplish the drainage project at Longfellow MS.  The sign-ups have been sparse, and JP hopes to get more folks interested.

SEPT 20 is our OKTOBERFEST.  A very few tickets have been sold and we need all members to get to work and sell them as well as buy their own and sign up to help out.  It is a fund raiser, after all, and we should all be participating.  A dedicated few will attempt to sell tickets after all the weekend services at the Oktoberfest venue the next 2 weekends.

SEPT. 23 (Yes, that's a Tuesday) we will celebrate the installation of Phuoc to status of Past President and usher in the year of Denise.  It will be at Chevy's in Emeryville, and of course you all will be there.  DO NOT come to the City Club that day – we will be meeting for dinner instead of lunch.

SEPT. 24 and 25 will be RIF distribution.  Since VC was not present, there was no way to access a sign-up sheet.  But, help will be needed, so mark your calendar.

The weekend of the 24th/25th will be the Key Club training weekend and drivers are needed who can also spend the night as chaperones.  Phuoc needs to hear from you.

There was some mention of a couple of very senior Kiwanians attempting to install bulletin boards at Le Conte School.  It took 2 hours to figure out the job Thursday afternoon and then about 55 minutes to do it Friday morning.  And both of them are still walking around.

There was mention that the tennis ball brigade struck at a school in San Leandro (or nearby) this past week and still has a large supply to be handed out.

Duane has 09 Entertainment Books available for $25 and expects the Eco Books any day now.

Among the many H/S$ was Sandy who was sorry for her neighbors who had the fire and happy that it didn't spread to her house.  We can all agree with that.

Our speaker was none other than Linda who wanted to bring us all up to speed on the quilting project.  Sounds as though the quilts are being turned out on her production line and she had some samples of the types that are being made.  For those of us who don't really know a quilt from a blanket, she explained that a quit is analogous to a baloney sandwich.  The outer quilt layers are the bread of the sandwich (the top is fancy and the bottom plain); and the quilt filling is batting whereas the sandwich filling is baloney.  One hold the sandwich together with toothpicks, but the quilt is sewn.

Finally, many of these quilts will not be used on a bed but will be hung on a wall.  In fact, she is now getting into artsy quilting which is meant to be hung only.
