Newsletter 11111

We did have a wonderful group today, what with a "guest" brought by B. Carpenter, and two speakers.   Our songleader, P. Khong, led us in a great rendition of GBA.  (this is becoming a great habit!!)  Rev. Bliss gave a short invocation, and that "guest" agreed to carry around the fine box (more on that later!!).

Circle K was represented by 2 members, Diane and Daniel.  It is going to be superb to have our Circle Kers back with us after this holiday time.  We have missed you all!!!

We had GUESTS!!  B. Carpenter's "guest" was a member of our club that we seldom see, none other than J. Asher.  He looks as young as he did 10 years ago!  (You can pay for that compliment, John!!!)  Our other guests were our speakers.  Ursula Machado, a volunteer recruiter with Civicorps Schools and AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Program in Oakland, was here to tell us of a volunteering opportunity to work with them on a shoreline project I believe this coming weekend.  Our main speaker was Alison Chan of the Save The Bay Organization.  (More on that later.)

S. Hearn and B. Fay arrived late and had to pay!  J. Asher was our secret greeter- but had shaken hands with everyone!!

Committee Reports were short and sweet!

1.     J.Piercy reported no effort this week on the Marina project.

2.      B. Carpenter reported on the upcoming interclub at Davis this week, and the DCM at Brennans on this Thursday.  San Leandro crab feed is this coming Saturday.  Think there is an interclub going.

3.      J. Rosano reported on the upcoming reconnoiter at Cazadero February 13.  Date of weekend is April 29-May 1,

4.      D Haughin reported on blood drive to be held at BHS on the 19th of Jan.  Also deadline for Sees order is Jan.25. Mid year Conv. in Sac is Feb 5th.

5.      S Hearn announced a benefit concert  for homeless youth in San Francisco this coming Sunday at 3:00pm.

6.      B. Barnwell announced the speaker next week will talke about the homeless situation in Berkeley.

JLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$

Asher was President of BK the year he joined.  J. Egeberg then put in more $$$ that B.C. had to force J. Asher to come to lunch.  B.C. J that he can live another 20 years with his IRA.

SPEAKER?????

Our speaker of the day was Alison Chan of the Save the Bay Organization.  She gave us interesting information on how plastic bags get into the ocean, etc. etc.  Did you know that the Baby Area uses 3.8 billion bags a year, and the average use time of a bag is 12 minutes?  They also work on restoration of native plants in the transition zone.  There are many volunteer opportunities with this organization.  If you'd like to learn more, go to any of the following sites:

          www.saveSFbay.org/bay-vs-bag

A wonderful note was received by F. Bliss on January 9th from Vijay- our member!!  He has been trying to be an actor- bar tended, did census bureau stuff, then traveled to Japan to try for acting again, then came home from that about seven months later.  He has sense been working in the acting field and hopefully one day will get a bigger role so that we can see him on the screen!!  He wished us all a great and wonderful year.

Meeting over…  beautiful day… we're all fine and missing those we do not see…

Berkeley Newsletter 010411

Opening

Phuoc conducted an awesome God Bless America. Rev Bliss did a nice blessing and we were off.  Tamara tended the fine box.  No guests, but Chino Green was noted in the crowd.  She brought wonderful photo books from Japan for us to ooh & aah over.  John Piercy collected $ for our waiters.

Davis Interclub!

We're planning to interclub with Davis on January 13.  12:10 at the Symposium Restaurant.  Possibly followed by a visit to the Kiwanis House in Sacramento, yet to be arranged.  Let Bill Carpenter know if you can go. Frank has offered to take passengers in his van.

BHS Blood Drive Volunteers

The next blood drive at Berkeley High is on January 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Sign up for a shift if you can.  We help the first timers at the canteen feel comfortable.  There was talk about "manning" the booth. Discussion ensued about membering the booth.  Bob Barnwell wondered out loud why it's "A-men" and not "A-women".

See's Fundraiser

Denise first made sure we were paying attention.  Then she asked if we could do the See's through advance sign ups.  There were a lot of "yea's", so that's what we'll do.  Forms available at the meetings for deliver before Valentine's Day.  Ask your friends, get the money and deliver in a month.  Good planning, Denise!  Besides, you won't have to lug twenty pounds of candy each week.  Virginia entertained us with a long soliloquy about whether certain candy is better than another.  Molasses chips, heart shaped boxes, her own recipes, on and on and on for the good of the cause.
