Newsletter 020811

Things were completely different at the Berkeley Kiwanis meeting today.  You ask how??  Well… the young lady playing President did not look like the President we know.  The song leader chose a different song.  The fine box monies did not go to our club… The speaker(s) played games instead of lecturing!  Lots and lots of things were auctioned off.  The meeting ran overtime.  What a kick!!!

It was……

CIRCLE K Takeover Day!!

Shera was Madame President.  She asked P. Khong to lead the song, and he selected our National Anthem.  Circle Ker Ken Tau was the fine collector.  Circle Ker Kenneth Lee was the Secret Greeter and he did catch two folks who found out the fine was $2.00, not the normal $1.00 for refusing to shake the SG's hand (or just ignoring him!!).

Committee Reports were short and sweet!

1.     E. Levitch  showed a rendering of the future trellis for the Marina.  He stated he got up at 3AM this morning to do the drawing.  (Ha!)  He thinks work will begin on it in 1 ½ months.

2.  B. Carpenter reported on two interclubs this week.  F&R Bliss, D. Haughin, P. Khong, and T. Ng found their way up the hill to the UCB Circle K meeting on Feb. 1.  MidYear was attended by the Blisses, Carpenters,

   D. Haughin, S. Hearn and J. Rosano.

3.  MidYear in Sacramento was fun

according to some, okay according to

    others.  Food actually was fine.

JLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$

We always have many JL$ and today was no exception.  This editor tried taking notes, and now cannot read most.  P. Khong was happy for the Super Bowl and other stuff.  F. Bliss bought MANY Circle K hand-made clay roses which he then presented to his lovely bride of many years.

E. Levitch spoke the praises of the wonderful, talented, capable, and spirited Circle Kers that he hopes will continue in the Kiwanis family when they graduate.  He promised to send special delivery $25.00 to Circle K to put towards whatever project they would like.  PLEASE let us know when you receive that money!!!  J. Rosano put in $5.00 in hopes that Circle K will leave him alone for the rest of the day.  VC.  put in J$$ that she could care less about the SB (Game!!)- she was jeered (thumbs down.)

    SPEAKER(sss)?????

Well… we had Circle K speakers who tried to entertain us- and did a great job of it!!!  Shera tried to get us to follow their rules of the day:

1.      Sing people's names when you call them.

2.      When music plays, you must do a dance move.

3.      Call Circle Kers by their last names.

4.      Ask Shear to use the bathroom before going.

5.      Don't interrupt when another person is talking.

Each rule had a fine attached.  Treasurer Kenneth kept tabs of fines.  I have no idea how he did it!!

We played a game called "Don't Forget the Lyrics".  We were promised tunes that were from "our generation"- Ha!!  They did get close with the Beach Boys!!  We had to sing the lyrics and try to fill in the last line…  well.. not too much luck, but lots of fun and laughs!!

Their auction of baked goods brought in many $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.  Lucky winners:

P. Khong: Chocolate cupcakes:  $40

D. Haughin: Raspberry streusel bars:  $35

F. Bliss: Home cooked dinner 4 two:  $40

Circle K Tshirts totaled $71

P. Khong: pic. of Wash. School project:  $10

S. Hearn:  House cleaning:  $50

R. Bliss: Chocolate cake balls:  $10

J. Piercy: Earl Grey Lemon cookies  $15

V.C.:  a Serenade:  $20

F. Bliss:  a song by all Circle Kers:  $25

J. Rosano:  Sugar Cookies:  $10

V.C.:  Lemons:  $10

Circle Ker Nina:  Lemons:  $4

P. Khong:  Pear Pineapple Jam:  $12

Car Freshners totaled $20

F. Bliss:  Chocolate Crinkles:  $50

Pictures of Josh went to:

          VC:  $35

          D. Haughin:  $35

          Circle Ker Jeff:  $20

It seems to this editor that this totals up to a lot of funds collected for their projects.  Added to the auction monies are all the fines and the JL$$ collected.  What a great day and what fun our dear Circle Kers are.  They make us feel young again!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!!

We have two more meetings this month.

Feb. 15- Sees Candy- Bring your spouses,

             loved ones, etc.

Feb. 22- Legion of Honor luncheon and

             celebration of our BK anniversary.

We have a wonderful birthday wish for our dear Dr. Allan Coe!  He will be a young 90 this coming Feb. 27th.   We want each and every one of us to mail him a card.  If you bring your cards to the BK meeting either the 15th or the 22nd, F. Bliss will get them all mailed for us!!  What a great idea!!!

Upcoming Events:

1.     Berkeley Board meeting will be at S.

     Hearn's home on Feb 17th.  5:30pm

Have a great week!!

Newsletter 11111

We did have a wonderful group today, what with a "guest" brought by B. Carpenter, and two speakers.   Our songleader, P. Khong, led us in a great rendition of GBA.  (this is becoming a great habit!!)  Rev. Bliss gave a short invocation, and that "guest" agreed to carry around the fine box (more on that later!!).

Circle K was represented by 2 members, Diane and Daniel.  It is going to be superb to have our Circle Kers back with us after this holiday time.  We have missed you all!!!

We had GUESTS!!  B. Carpenter's "guest" was a member of our club that we seldom see, none other than J. Asher.  He looks as young as he did 10 years ago!  (You can pay for that compliment, John!!!)  Our other guests were our speakers.  Ursula Machado, a volunteer recruiter with Civicorps Schools and AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Program in Oakland, was here to tell us of a volunteering opportunity to work with them on a shoreline project I believe this coming weekend.  Our main speaker was Alison Chan of the Save The Bay Organization.  (More on that later.)

S. Hearn and B. Fay arrived late and had to pay!  J. Asher was our secret greeter- but had shaken hands with everyone!!

Committee Reports were short and sweet!

1.     J.Piercy reported no effort this week on the Marina project.

2.      B. Carpenter reported on the upcoming interclub at Davis this week, and the DCM at Brennans on this Thursday.  San Leandro crab feed is this coming Saturday.  Think there is an interclub going.

3.      J. Rosano reported on the upcoming reconnoiter at Cazadero February 13.  Date of weekend is April 29-May 1,

4.      D Haughin reported on blood drive to be held at BHS on the 19th of Jan.  Also deadline for Sees order is Jan.25. Mid year Conv. in Sac is Feb 5th.

5.      S Hearn announced a benefit concert  for homeless youth in San Francisco this coming Sunday at 3:00pm.

6.      B. Barnwell announced the speaker next week will talke about the homeless situation in Berkeley.

JLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$

We always have many JL$ and today was no exception.  This editor is having a hard time reading her notes three days after the fact!!  F. Bliss gave $$ for something.  P. Khong L for the Oregon Ducks.  J. Rosano

J to be here (he's had a naughty cold).  J. Egeberg J he is a secret friend of the new police chief in San Francisco.  J. Asher $$$ that he misses us, and B. Skrak asked him

to put in a few $$$ for Bob being in Hawaii for three weeks.  Also, John said if you go into the Zamboni site on the internet you will find some interesting history on Bob.  B. Fay J$ that J. Asher was President of BK the year he joined.  J. Egeberg then put in more $$$ that B.C. had to force J. Asher to come to lunch.  B.C. J that he can live another 20 years with his IRA.

SPEAKER?????

Our speaker of the day was Alison Chan of the Save the Bay Organization.  She gave us interesting information on how plastic bags get into the ocean, etc. etc.  Did you know that the Baby Area uses 3.8 billion bags a year, and the average use time of a bag is 12 minutes?  They also work on restoration of native plants in the transition zone.  There are many volunteer opportunities with this organization.  If you'd like to learn more, go to any of the following sites:

          www.saveSFbay.org/bay-vs-bag

          www.dontpavemybay.org

          www.saveSFbay.org/volunteer

Much information is available.. too much for this editor to report here!

A wonderful note was received by F. Bliss on January 9th from Vijay- our member!!  He has been trying to be an actor- bar tended, did census bureau stuff, then traveled to Japan to try for acting again, then came home from that about seven months later.  He has sense been working in the acting field and hopefully one day will get a bigger role so that we can see him on the screen!!  He wished us all a great and wonderful year.

Meeting over…  beautiful day… we're all fine and missing those we do not see…

Berkeley Newsletter 010411

Phuoc conducted an awesome God Bless America. Rev Bliss did a nice blessing and we were off.  Tamara tended the fine box.  No guests, but Chino Green was noted in the crowd.  She brought wonderful photo books from Japan for us to ooh & aah over.  John Piercy collected $ for our waiters.

Davis Interclub!

We're planning to interclub with Davis on January 13.  12:10 at the Symposium Restaurant.  Possibly followed by a visit to the Kiwanis House in Sacramento, yet to be arranged.  Let Bill Carpenter know if you can go. Frank has offered to take passengers in his van.

BHS Blood Drive Volunteers

The next blood drive at Berkeley High is on January 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Sign up for a shift if you can.  We help the first timers at the canteen feel comfortable.  There was talk about "manning" the booth.
