table went down
-Evie: Happy that the average age went down even more when she joined
the table
-Josh: For the first Board Meeting
-RevBill: For youthful JohnP

OTHER NOTES AND COMMENTS
RevRoberta provided us with a September Daily Meditation booklet.
Thank you, Roberta.
PrezDenise had a ½ price sale on The Basket. Once $25.00 was
collected, the raffle was held. The Basket was filled with yummy sweet
treats; Frank was the
winner.
Membership shows Berkeley Kiwanis at a +2.

SPEAKER
Art Paradis was our speaker. His talk, Mystery Solved, recounted his
adventures and research to discover the story behind a counterfeit
fractional currency note from Civil War times.

Art traced the history of a counterfeit note--famous because it was the
only counterfeit note reproduced by using an actual captured printing
plate--from the time it was featured in the 1867 Heath Counterfeit
Detector book (a book containing info to help banks and businesses
detect counterfeit money) back to the arrest of the counterfeiters and
the capture of the plate from the privy.

Art's detective work included trips to the New York Public library,
purchases of old books on eBay and a lucky find at an auction. The
story of the capture of the gang and the printing plate involved a
rival counterfeiter hiring a private detective to raid his rival's
press. The actual raid resembled a Keystone Cops fiasco with the main
counterfeiter jumping out the window, the son of the local sheriff
being captured, and the printer throwing the printing plate into the
privy.

The main counterfeiter, Charles Brockway, was later captured and worked
for the Secret Service as a way to stay out of jail—the Secret Service
believed in the old adage: it takes one (in this case a counterfeiter)
to know one (another counterfeiter). Brockway did such a bad job of

turning in other counterfeiters to the Secret Service, he finally ended
up serving 15 years in prison.

Art enjoys researching to uncover the history behind the mystery.
Thank you, Art, for a fascinating talk and a look at a segment of
history we rarely see.

Every day at a Berkeley Kiwanis meeting is a sunshiny day! Some empty
seats, but all of us who were there had a great time. The microphone
was "dead", so if those speaking didn't speak up then nothing was
recorded!!! J. Piercy was at the check-in desk, B. Rice was asked to
lead our patriotic song (with most able assistance of F. Bliss), Rev.
Fay gave a short invocation, and we found out later that T. Paradis was
carrying around the fine fire extinguisher.

Several notes of interest coming along for you to enter into your
BRAIN!!
Aug. 20: BK Board meeting- Bliss' at 5:15pm
Aug. 22: Hayward/CV administrative fundraiser. Always fun. Call BFE
Pres Denise for details.
Aug. 24: YEAH sandwich making at S. Hearn's abode- 11:45am. Enough
sandwiches for the makers!
Aug. 29: Oakland Kiwanis tribute to B. Payne.
Spengers in Berkeley. Park 5:01pm or after for 3 validated free parking
hours! Will be a good event. $40 per person.
Sept. 10: Installation of LTG and Awards night- Elio's in San Leandro.
VC begs for you all to attend this. Happy No Host hour 6pm.. dinner
7pm. VC (or "Deep Pockets BC") will pay for the first drink of any
Berkeley Kiwanian that attends. $35 per person. Thank you for the sign
ups so far!!!
Sept. 8: Solano Stroll committee meeting at 11:00am before the regular
lunch m
eeting.
Sept. 13: Solano Stroll- all hands on deck!!!

Sept. 29: Installation of Team Bliss and Paradis at the Paradis palace
in Lafayette. NOT TO BE MISSED.
The kitchen might be underway or done???

Greatest event of the day was the induction of our newest member, Diep
Nguyen. She is another of our wonderful Circle Kers that has been so
eager to join up with our great group!! Diep has been in the Kiwanis
family since she was a Freshman in High School. She majored in
architecture and education (WOW) and loves the design side of
architecture. She has LOVED the K. service and the friends she has
made, and her "childhood dream" was to become a Kiwanian. Diep will
boost the Southern CA. contingency in service and interclubbing!! Go BK
South!!! Welcome, DIEP!

$$$$ were numerous, as usual! B. Barnwell  that flyers
often don't arrive on time. F. Bliss  that the Friday night Division 2
team dinner at the Old Mexican Café in Old Town, San Diego was so
successful, and the money came out correct!! S. Hearn gave a $ that B.
Lowman is absent today and next week and $ for the new badge list. P.
Khong gave $$ for the San Diego "food outing" trip, down-there- back!
J. Egeberg ?s whether P.
Khong ever cooks, $$ for CAL football one
week closer, Oktoberfest one week closer, no strike for BART yet, and
Diep! B. Fay  he missed San Diego and  for our new member. Dack
Rosano kudos to VC for the FIZZ off win, and for Diep. J. Piercy
delighted to induct Diep and wondering why no other Circle Kers here.
R. Bliss  anniversary $$$ to the foundation. L. Hannawalt said her hat
had a great time at San Diego, the aquarium and $ for the drive home.
F. Bliss discovered he has a few years yet before he has to grow a
beard!

INTERCLUBBING
continues. B. Carpenter keeps us moving along from club to club. Our
main interclub this week was at the District Convention in San Diego.
F. & R. Bliss, P. Khong, D. Wong, E. Levitch, L. & B. Hannawalt, T. & A.
Paradis, and B. & V. Carpenter traveled the many miles to and fro-
attended the wonderful Div. 2 dinner, went to many seminars, visited
with many people, watched R. Bliss installed as a Trustee for the '09-'
12 years and VC installed as LTG for the '09-'10 year, and some
participated in the annual Div. 2 FIZZ OFF which BERKELEY succeeded in
winning. Now the trophy is back in our hands!! It must be stated that
ALL entries into the event were wonderful, and presentation by mixers of
the fizzes was outstanding!! Tha
nks to Hayward/CV, Alameda and San
Leandro and to all the tasters who voted for the very best!!!!!!!!!!!!
F. Bliss reported that Berkeley's entry was the finest he had ever
tasted! Go Gramma!!

R. Bliss gave a short review of some of the things that went on in San
Diego. Hands of Service is the theme of the 2009-2010 year headed up by
Gov. Roy Talley. We are encouraged to Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk-
and to work on MEMBERSHIP and GROWTH- taking future possible members to
service projects, socials, fundraisers, etc. before "asking" to join-
encouraging, perhaps, the desire to join before being asked!

In addition to all this EXCITING news we DID have a speaker!! If you
need to know anything about Watershed Management, ask Jeff Egeberg!
(Watershed: an area of land that drains downslope to the lowest point.
The water moves through a network of drainage pathways, both underground
and on the surface- often converging into streams and rivers which
become progressively larger as the water moves on downstream, eventually
reaching an estuary and the ocean.) A detailed power point presentation
led us through the planning of possible future action by cities and
citizens in the process using available water (rain!!!) in our Albany
Berkeley UC area. Rain gardens, green roof gardens, flow through
planters, rain barrels and cisterns, permeable surfaces- a
ll suggested
ways… there's lots more to think about. Thank you, Jeff, for this look
into an interesting topic!

Everyone appears to LOVE the monthly fundraising baskets. We had two in
July, so skipped the month of August, and L. Hannawalt offered to do one
for September. Can't wait to see what's inside!!

B. Carpenter is looking for TWO more folks to head over to San Leandro
next Tuesday, the 25th, for Kiwanis lunch. He and VC will be going. We
need this club for a round robin!!! It will mean missing our own BK
meeting at which our own A. Paradis will talk about fraudulent money.
We have an interclub already for Albany/El Cerrito that same Tuesday
morning. B. Skrak, D. Leonard, BFE Pres. Denise and B. and V. Carpenter
are signed up for that one.

And thus another meeting headed by BFE Pres. Denise is over.. Only 6
more meetings for her to lead!!! Time to think up a name for our new
Presidents- ie: ½ and ½ Pres.???

REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING EVENTS!!

1. YEAH sandwich making
2. LTG installation
3. Berkeley Kiwanis installation
plus the others listed on page 1 of this blurb!!

I leave you with the following (given to me by R. Bliss)
SAQOTW

The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have
sought and found how to serve.

Always Up
Today we had another quality crowd, this time celebrating our little
sisters in Albany-El Cerrito. Yes, we had not only an official Interclub
with duly authorized representatives of that illustrious club, such as
Prez-Elect K. Euston & close friend Sherman Lam, but right behind them
came a very well-represented Albany High Key Club. Somehow, P. Khong
happened to sit at the same table and took credit for the presence of
them all. He introduced them so quickly that it couldn't all be recorded
here.
Meeting preliminaries included B. Rice still trying to get folks to sing
on key, J Piercy invocating that he is still an unabashed and
out-of-the-closet Fog Lover, B. Skrak trying to fine folks for no good
reason, and E. Goodman was stll trying to get folks to pay for lunch.
As far as other "guests," we had, shall we say, some very special
attendees, including a somewhat rare visit by new BK member Gail
Whats-her-name (well, can YOU say it??). On top of that (or can you top
it?), no less than three notorious past Lt Governors were saluted: R.
Bliss, E. Levitch, and V. Carpenter (she was actually in abstentia, but
some say that when hubby Bill is here, so is she; others say she's
always that way).

More Goings-On
Then we had a virtual plethora (not a real one) of announcements. Whew,
it's a happening scene!!:
 Dist
rict Convention in San Diego August 13 – 15: Egad, that's this
coming weekend! Last week we were worried about everyone showing up. Now
we know that E. Levitch is getting on an airplane, but he wasn't sure
where it was going to land.
 Solano Stroll is still Sept 13. Come one and all to "man" and "woman"
our booths.
 LtGov Installation is stillSept 10 – Elio's Restaurant in San Leandro.

 BK Club Installation is still on Sept 29 at spacious and elegant
Rancho Paradis in La-la-land (check your Mapquest)
 Testimony to Bob Payne – Aug 29, 5:30 pm – Spenger's $40
 Making Sandwiches at Sandra's last Monday was so much fun, she wants
to do it again! There were even some left over for the service project
at YEAH…

 RIF is now set for Sept 23 – 24. Mark your calendars!
 Sponsored Youth Report by P. Khong: (1) the BK Board Meeting on August
20 will be a doozie! All SY clubs are expected to submit their annual
budgets. Whew! (2) FYI, Fall Training Conference at Camp So & So is a
budget biggie.
The Circle K Experiment
Prez Josh pointed out that this is only the second year of summer
service and summer meetings. They have made some adjustments, and as a
result, it has been a huge success! He then introduced VP Nina and
0AFundraiser Ken. They had a baking party for kids from St. Andrews School
and THEN went over to paint St. Andrews Church, inside and out
(Michelangelo is worried about whether they did the ceiling, too).
Lastly, their annual Garage Sale is Sept 5 – 6, but just realized that
it's a busy weekend… Labor Day, the 1st home Cal football game, Bay
Bridge closed). I guess they don't read the "most unnecessary
publication in the world."
Couple of other notes: Their website has been down recently (sure, we
noticed), and 1st fall meeting is Sept 8 (mark your calendars, although
location is TBD).

Happy, Sad, and Otherwise

• J. Egeberg was happy that the Cal football season is another week
closer, and had another one (sad?) that he is still on the LtGov's email
distribution (the one with the campaign ads) and asked HalfPrezElect
(HPE) R. Bliss to speak about the shaky future of Division 2.
• Josh was very happy and excited about the UCBerkeley Circle K being
honored once again with mucho district awards (which he rattled off too
fast for this reporter). Congrats, CK!!
MMFINA
Fill-in Program HPE R. Bliss responded that Division 2 is down to 241,
versus 250

needed to be a division. Also, nine clubs are needed, versus seven. She
encouraged us all to get working on bringing in new members. Division
Two is on a "clo
se-watch" list.
She proposed the "Buddy System" for all the new members we'll be
getting. She went on to recommend the new book by Kiwanian Steve Siemens
– "Push-ups for People." Steve wants us all to walk around with "MMFINA"
on our foreheads. After much guessing, we figured out that it means "
Make Me Feel Important, Needed, and Accepted!"
Meanwhile, a certain member of the audience, who didn't have a clue as
usual, jumped up and sprawled out on the floor doing imitation physical
push-ups. Thank gawd they weren't the real thing. Anyway, most agreed
that this wasn't good ol' Steve's message.
Last but Not Least
Unfortunately, our lame-duck Secretary Gimpy informed us to make the
following deletions from our roster:
o George Maxe
o Jessica Padilla
o Jennifer Teer
o Haley Leventhal
The silver lining is that our new members still leave us (barely) in the
positive column.

Beefing Up
Today we had a small but "quality" crowd (dubiously claimed by somebody
in the back of the room). B. Rice tried to get folks to sing on key, B.
Fay was thankful that at least some folks were here, B. Price was trying
to fine folks for being here, and some invisible Kiwanian was trying to
get folks to pay for lunch (by buying tickets).
We even had guests, to beef up the crowd. Yeah, D. Haughin introduced
her favorite MIL (Mother-in-Law) June, all the way from Colorado Springs
(yes, she still comes to visit, in spite of her daughter-in-law's pesky
father – the goateed guy).
Then we had B. Fay's grandson, Patrick, who is on his way back to
Oakdale, or someplace like that, in southern Oregon.
Then we had a virtual landslide of announcements. Whew, it's a happening
scene!!:
 District Convention in San Diego August 13 – 15: We have as many as
twelve going, if everyone shows up (as you know, we have certain members
who tend to get lost)
 Hayward-Castro Valley fundraiser on Aug 22. Get your tix ahead of
time. Contact B. Carpenter.
 Solano Stroll is…. Sept 13. Come man our booth. In fact, we have two –
maybe we can "man" one and "woman" the other.

 LtGov Installation is Sept 10 – Elio's Restaurant in San Leandro.
 BK Club Installation
(who's in and who's out??) Sept 29 – Rancho
Paradis in Lafayette
 Testimony to Bob Payne – Aug 29, 5:30 pm – Spenger's $40
 Interclub at Hayward Castro Valley's Ice Cream social last week -- B.
& V. Carpenter, E. Goodman, B. Rice (yes, you can still love ice cream
even when you're almost a hundred years old)
 Make Sandwiches at Sandra's next Monday @ 11:00 – eat them afterwards
(hope some are left for the service project at YEAH…)
 Last Night's Dine Out was a success, in spite of the small crowd (and
the first two restaurants being closed – what's that all about? Anyway,
nobody went hungry)
 The plans for the gazebo at Washington School are finally done (we
think – only E. Levitch knows for sure) J. Piercy is now submitting them
for approval (which should take no longer than a year).

The Circle K Expedition
Prez Josh introduced VP Mimi and Fundraiser Ken. They have had no less
than eight summer service events so far – whew! Among other things, they
assisted with the Dog Festival at Golden Gate Fields last weekend
(sponsored by the Animal Shelter). They had an "Angel" baking party for
kids (from St. Andrews School) to help make cookies to send to soldiers
defending our country (?). Lastly, their annual Garage Sale is Sept 5

6 (a busy weekend… since it is Labor Day, AND the 1st home Cal football
game, AND the Bay Bridge will be closed).
More Goings-On
The incoming "Blissful Paradise" DoublePrez handed out questionnaires
last week about who wants power service and committee chairs next year.
Remember to turn yours back in by the firm due date. Anyone remember
when? Soon!

Happy, Sad, and Otherwise
• B. Carpenter is not looking forward very much to some more chest
surgery on Aug 28 – seems that they forgot to put a couple ribs back in
(or something like that)
• P. Khong had some cockamamie story about his power steering going out
and creating endless havoc (at least, according to his story that went
on and on…)
• Patrick (same Fay grandson) had a similar cockamamie story about his "
clunker" breaking down…but unfortunately, had a very sad $$ about his
parents divorcing
• Mimi (same CK'er) had a slightly-less-cockamamie, but just as long a,
story about celebrating her 20th BD
• B. Fay came from yet-another Fay family reunion but nevertheless is
celebrating the 58th anniversary of his being ordained at Grace
Cathedral (TO MUCH APPLAUSE – clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap,
clap.clap)
• E. Levitch was identified today as the real Ron Dellums. Everyone
agreed that he was probably the same guy.

• J. Rosano was happy that the Cal football season is right around the
corner. This IS the year….
• B. Rice was very happy and excited about being honored once again for
something that he rambled on so much – we were all so happy for Bob!!
Even though we didn't know what it was…!!

Another Fill-In Program
Program Chair for the Month J. Egeberg reminded us that he masquerades
as a faithful public servant and first described the City's plans to
pave ALL of University Avenue, in phases starting from the bottom, over
the next few months. Be prepared for inconvenience!
He next proceeded to put (almost) everyone to sleep by making a
presentation, given to the City Council a few months ago, on the program
to convert overhead utilities (electrical wires + communication
facilities) to underground – a very expensive proposition. He provided
the whole history, displayed maps & everything. Boy that REALLY put
everyone to sleep.
When it was over, PrezFireX asked him whether there would be a better
program next week, and he said he hoped so but couldn't promise.
