Newsletter 032409

Another glorious day!!  Lovely sun, lovely breeze, lovely folks, lovely food!!!  Greeting us at the ticket table was J. Piercy.  He bounced between the ticket table and the table where he had "stored" his lunch.  The room was light on folks (with three sitting at the secretary's area, wine glasses in hand, talking amongst themselves- has the bar moved downstairs??) until about 5 minutes before the bell rang.  Then- folks began arriving, including former member and guest of E. Levitch, Elizabeth Turnbloom, who brightened our room with her dazzling smile!  Also joining us was Bruce, son of C. Fitch- who will be hanging around for the remainder of the week.

When the bell sounded, we all stood to sing a rousing rendition of GBA led by B. Rice, followed by the "tender mercies" invocation delivered by B. Carpenter.
Gray-bearded E. Levitch carried around the fire extinguisher fine box, and it did fill up with bunches of $$$$.

Congratulations are in order for out new Circle K Family Chair, Diane (I didn't get a last name).  Her "term" officially begins in April, and Monica was nowhere to be found.  Diane introduced Virginia (who was happily enjoying the BCC lunch), and had no other news to report except that the Circle K DCON is this coming weekend in Woodland Hills.  We will have an interclub in the presence of P. Khong, T. Ng and B. & V. Carpenter.  All are driving down- Be Safe!

Committee reports as follows:
1. B. Barnwell & J. Piercy reported that a letter has been created to present to graduating college students to continue their service through Kiwanis, and inviting him/her to join BK or a Kiwanis Club in the area he/she might be locating to.  Dues are CHEAP for the first couple of years.  BFE Pres Denise and P. Khong will deliver next week.
2. V.C. reported that the RIF distribution finished up last Thursday and another will be planned hopefully in May.  As well, Franklin School is beginning a lending library.  On Monday, March 30th, V.C. will deliver lending library books donated by Macys and RIF to Franklin and the head of the program.  Anyone wanting to go with her, just call!!
3. B.C. reported an interclub at Hayward/CV last Tuesday, with D. Wong, E. Goodman and B & V.
4. P. Khong reported that Key Club Convention is coming the first weekend in April.  Kids are getting ready for a wild and noisy weekend of fun and honors.

We also tried to celebrate Borden Price's birthday but he was not in attendance.  Happy Birthday, Borden!

We also received a thank you for our annual gift to K. International, and because it was "early bird", 2 pins- one for our secretary and one for our treasurer.

We know that we have special speakers among our members.  This week Debra Wong showed us her expertise as a teacher.   Debra is the main creator of our Berkeley Kiwanis website.  She pulled that site up on her computer- and the "wide screen"- and led us through a series of things WE can do to update the website, post pictures, change (add to ) the calendar, etc. etc. etc.  She even "allowed" us to touch her laptop- and do some things ourself!!  Now.. we all need to get into the website… run around in it for a bit… and then try doing some of the stuff she taught us.
This was a most informative program, and many of us Kiwanians are grateful for having been given an opportunity to try our hand at having some fun!  Thank you, Debra, for your patience and for answering many of our interesting questions!!

Newsletter 031709

Green was everywhere—sweaters and ties and shirts and socks, even hats!  Although Phuoc's tossing the green napkin on his head was a questionable "wearin' of the green."  We feasted on Irish corned beef and cabbage.

Prez Denise called us to order and wished us:  Happy St. Patti's day.  BobR led us in a rousing rendition of GBA.  JohnP prayed to our Heavenly Father and thanked Him for Kiwanis, our good works, the fantastic weather and the meal.  Evie sought out $$$ via our fine Fine Box.  We quickly started tossing in money because a number of folks were not wearing their badge or their pin.  Bettye (our Secret Greeter) announced we were the "friendliest group in the Bay Area" because all had shook her hand.  We had no visitors, but Chino was noted as having graduated and hopefully was passing from Circle K to Berkeley Kiwanis.

VC announced the services for Bob Brown:  Friday March 20 at 11:00 AM at Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church, 525 29th Street in Oakland.

Denise reminded us of the Board Meeting at the Blisses, March 19 at 5:15.

Jeff was in the possession of a special historical Kiwanis relic:  a 1955 Roster.  We carefully looked at it and reminisced.  128 members in 1955; Wow!

Be sure to check out the latest District magazine; we have a picture and blurb about our work at the Le Conte School.

Circle K'ers Monica, Kenneth, Josh, VeJay and Chino (they still claim her) enlivened the meeting.  This past week they had worked at Chaparral House, attended a feast at the Carpenters (that included a mystery enactment, written by them, that was incredible), slaved over a sink washing up at the annual St. Patrick's Day feast and party, participated in the Emerald Run and attended a DCM.  Next week is Spring Breaks (loud hurrahs were heard).  Their District Convention is February 27-29.  May 8 is their Banquet.

Denise will be bringing our Easter fundraiser next week—See's candy.  Our Christmas Sees selling was a great success.  So collect candy next week, and sell sell sell.  Or buy lots yourself and hop out to distribute sweets to family and friends.

Bettye reminded us of our participation in the Blood Drive March 26.  She also announced that lots of quilts would be needed soon.
RIF takes place March 19 at the Hopkins and King and Franklin Head Start Programs.  VC is the coordinator of our RIF program (VC we all appreciate the work you do to make this program so successful).
BC was putting together an Interclub for Hayward Castro Valley this (March 17) evening.

Jack announced the Cazadero weekend, April 17, 18, 19.  He promised Redwoods and a creek and a steak feast and lots and lots of work.  15 Kiwanis folks and 25 Circle K'ers will be attending.  Contact Jack to add your name to the list.

Phuoc announced the Key Club needs rides to their DCM this weekend.  Contact Phuoc if you can provide a ride.  He also announced that the Key Club Convention is April 3-5.

New Bob auctioned off a T-shirt from the Palos Verdes Kiwanis run.  He had contributed $$$ to the event and received the coveted shirt.  Jack bought it for Prez Denise.

Happy and Sad Dollars piled in:
--Phuoc for the Friday Murder Mystery, Circle K, Monica, and the St Pat's feast on Saturday
--Josh for the great candidates for Circle K's Board
--Sandy announcing the YPSO concert March 22, part of an impressive Jewish Music Festival (contact Sandy for details
--Prez Denise for a fun-filled Kiwanis-filled Saturday
--Frank for Roberta getting better and that he recognized 20 folks from the Historical Roster
--VC for Monica and learning the way to keep Circle K and Oakland Tech K happy—feed them, feed them, feed them.

VC was our speaker and we had just the bestest time answering St Pat's questions, filling in a crossword puzzle and collecting prizes of bright green lucky pillows.

Next week is a mystery speaker.  The following week Maurice (Ed's son) will speak on "green building".

A special thank you to Virginia for providing fun and laughter and entertainment as "speaker".

Newsletter 031009

On a Clear Day
It was a clear and cold beautiful winter day, and the B-Team jumped in to action, with PrezFireX (D. Haughin) trying to sell tix and then tromp up shortly to the podium to play President, B.  Rice leading his gazillionth + a few GBA, someone trying to collect money in a fire extinguisher, B. Lowman was thankful for many things!
The room was filled with younger folks, which prompted us to think that there could be some sort of Takeover going on. Shortly we found out that our suspicions were right on – In addition to a respectable showing of Circle K from UC Berkeley, there was a huge crowd coming all the way from the Oakland Tech Key Club. We were assured, however, that it was not a HOSTILE takeover, as so many were concerned.
BK & C K
We had an unusual opportunity, for a takeover day, to take care of our own important business first.
There was in fact one legitimate guest, lost in the swirling crowd. B. Fay stood up to proudly

introduce Taylon Lewis, who is an accomplice of his grandson, who is staying at the Fays' for an extended period but doesn't get up early enough to make it to a Kiwanis lunch (who's paying the room & board, anyway?)
First up, CK Monica mentioned their regular meeting that night in 20 Barrows Hall, and then a really BIG event on Friday, which is a K Family Dinner from 6:00 – 10:00 at the Carpenters. Watch out, it is also a Murder Mystery event, so be prepared to defend yourself adequately so you don't end up being the Guilty One! She also mentioned an essential presence at a Berkeley Kiwanis event on Sat. night (MORE on that later). Lastly, our dear CK'er Josh is in a currently-running play (as in Theater), called "Sauce for the Goose" at the Zellerbach Playhouse on the UC Campus. Seems that some illustrious members of our Club, namely, R. & F. Bliss, turned out for a recent performance and vouched for Josh's incomparable performance (he even demonstrated enough of his "suggestive" dance moves to entice everyone's attendance.
Moving Right On
Our Prez then made the sad announcement that long-time member (even though we haven't seen him for a long time) Bob Brown has passed away. A recognition event may be planned for March 20 – stay tuned.
Today was the day to bring SOCKS for needy donations to "YEAH" spearheaded by our own S. Hearn. There were plenty, but there's still time to contribute even more.

Annual Key Club convention is next month. Yeah, we were all blessed all the youth in attendance today jumping to their feet "We feel good/we feel fine!!" There are 8 attending from Oakland Tech and 5 from Berkeley High. P. Khong is the sole chaperone (??? Can he handle that? Whew)
V. Carpenter p assed sign-up sheets for two RIF distributions for next Wed AM, March 19. There's still time to sign up with Virginia.
The annual St. Paddy's Day funfest at the Paradis ranch is this Sat, March 14 at 5 PM. Twenty-five are already signed up, but there's still room for more – contact Tamara before it's too late
DCM this Thur, March 13, 6:00 PM @ Harry's Hof Brau. Contact PrezFireX for info & directions.
B. Carpenter announced that Interclub #13 was held last week at the meeting of the Hayward-Castro Valley Club, consisting of himself, V. Carpenter, F. Bliss, E. Goodman.
And yes, Agnes, there was a Secret Greeter, and D. Wong duly nailed (ambushed) P. Khong for not being friendly.
J. Gimpy Rosano announced a very successful Reconnoiter last weekend to our new camp project worksite at Cazadero, with F. Bliss, P. Khong, J. Egeberg, D. Leonard along for the ride. There are a good number of challenging and interesting projects for our work party outing on April 17 – 19.
B. K. Happy & Not So Sad
E. Goodman escaped a fine so far, but turned herself in for not wearing her pin NOR a badge.
P. Khong had a 5-spot for being involved in the Reconnoiter + 4 more happy events.
Josh was happy to be holding "interviews" for next year's office in Circle K.
C. Fitch bragged about being an Oakland Tech grad of 1933 to much standing applause of the current student body.
L. Hannawalt was happy and proud of winning a quilting competition and a Key Club bowling tournament (Can someone weave a quilt with one hand while wielding a bowling ball with the other?).

A Program Turned Around
Leslie tromped up unceremoniously to take the mike and take over the meeting for Oakland Tech Key Club. We played intense games such as the likes of "Watermelon" and "Punishment." During the course of the latter, F. & R. Bliss and V. & B. Carpenter voluntarily subjected themselves for punishment by KISSING (wow!)
THEN we had a serious presentation of their winning 2nd pla ce in a Pediatric Trauma competition.
AND THEN the serious fun started, when they brought up mystery auctioneer VIJAY (Have we seen him before somewhere – amongst Circle K ranks?)! He started right out with showing us how to "reach for a star!"… and then…keep it up (keep on bidding, that is). Vijay + KC were so organized that they even had three categories: 1) baked goods, 2) other goods, and 3) services! What "services" you ask? Well, house cleaning, party serving/cleanup, gardening etc. The latter were VERY popular for our mature crowd. A very successful Takeover, wethinks!
