Newsletter 042809

It's always a fun day at a Berkeley Kiwanis meeting.  If you missed today, you missed a really "Delicious" and "Rewarding" day!!  The weather was great also!!!

The bell rang but BFE Pres. Denise seemed unable to gain control.  With so many folks crowding into the room- it was difficult!!  We all participated in a rousing rendition of GBA, with F. Bliss giving the beginning note- and P. Khong as conductor, and we did sound great!  B. Fay gave a short invocation, E. Goodman and F. Bliss were thanked for taking in the lunch monies, and J. Piercy was assigned the fine box.

D. Wong introduced her guest, Gail (this editor will NOT attempt the spelling of her last name!!) who will be submitting an application for membership (I think).
Our Circle K Family Chair, Diane, gave a relatively short report including information on their upcoming end-of-year Spring banquet which will be on May 8th,
6-10pm, semi dressy, and $20 per person- to which any and all of us are invited. F. Bliss volunteered to pick up Oakland Tech Key Clubbers who plan to attend.  A sign-up sheet was seen floating around the room.  As well, they are participating in Relay For Life and are in need of tents to "store" their things as it is a 24 hour event.  Donations in the form of checks to them for that event (as it is a fundraiser) may be made out to ASUC Circle K, and given to someone in the club!!

Committee reports as follows:
1. B. Lowman reported that quilts are to be distributed to Kayacameena on May 22nd.  She hasn't heard of a time frame yet.
2. V.C. reported no report on a RIF distribution as of now.
3. B.C. reported an interclub at Richmond last Wednesday, with J. Piercy, E. Goodman and B & V Carpenter.
4. F. Bliss and S. Hearn reported on YPSO, with the Pops Concert June 7th, and a concert this coming Sunday at 1st Pres. Church.  F. Bliss would like to know who will be able to assist with the Pops Concert.
5.YEAH cooking tomorrow. (Wednesday)
6. P. Khong reported that S. Hearn drove the Oakland Tech Key Clubbers to their DCM this past Saturday.  Thank you, Sandy.
7.  Some of us headed up to Circle K meeting tonight…

 JLJLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$$$$$
There were many JL dollars given, but much missed because this editor was busy chatting, running around, etc. etc..
E. Goodman very happy for birthday dinner with the Blissful couple!!  J. Egeberg s till raving that the great fundraiser social, Oktoberfest, is only 6 months away.  Many Js for our newest member-  (see further on in the bulletin).  VC delighted to formally meet Nina Yang, the Circle K FTC chair, as she and hubby BC are District Counselors for that event.  Nina, of course, is our very accomplished lemon cupcake maker who delivered yummy strawberry topped cupcakes to the lemon cookoff last week.  Are we all trying to eat more calories or what!!!

 THINGS TO REMEMBER!!
April 29: YEAH cooking project
May 5:  Scholarship luncheon
June 7:  YPSO Pops Concert
June 30:  Picnic in Tilden Park
Oct ??:  Oktoberfest Social Fundraiser

Nina provided all the names of the Circle Kers in attendance for today's meeting:  Pres Josh, Dimitry, Alex, Monica, Kenneth, Gail, Diane, Tiffany and herself.  We weren't sure if they were all here to support Josh, the See's candy speaker, or the INDUCTION of VeeJay Suzuki, our newest member.  Membership chair, D. Wong, did an outstanding job of inducting VeeJay.  (No offense to a past inductor, JP, but it was a breath of fresh air to have two YOUNG folks up there talking about the benefits of Kiwanis and both so full of energy and excitement.)  You all might remember VeeJay as the outstanding auctioneer for the Circle K and Oak Tech takeovers a few weeks back.  D. Wong described him as responsible and outgoing- what a combination!!  He received two standing ovations, took the mic and said a few things, then retired to his seat to finish lunch I think!!!  Congrats and Welcome (and remember to seek him out and sign his roster- VC already did that, and D. Wong stole VC's pen to do the same).

WELL…  If you missed today's meeting, you missed a real treat!!  Juanita Harte, Account Executive with See's Candies, came to visit and she treated us to many treats!!!   And they were all claimed- none left on the tables, many given away in drawings, and VC even got a full box for setting up the program!!  Juanita hails from Virginia Beach, Virginia but was lured to California with a job offer at See's 20 years ago.  She's loved it all this time!!  She has lots of See's trivia to share such as:
1.      70% of people would give up a computer password for a candy bar.
2.      It takes 123 acres to grow all the peanuts they use in their candy in a year.
3.      Several ladies still decorate the See's Easter eggs BY HAND.
4.      Bordeau and Scotchmallow are the most popular flavors
5.      182 square miles of Scotchmallow are sold at Christmastime.
6.      See's is not a franchise but company owned with about 220 locations.
7.      The candy is made in two locations, LA and South San Francisco.
8.      They still use equipment that is 80+ years old, as they have found newer type equipment has altered the quality.  They use HUGE copper pots and open flames.

9.      See's candy has a shelf life of 55 days.
10.  The three top selling times are Christmas, Easter, and Valentine's Day.
Thank you, Juanita, for an absolutely fun and informative look at See's history!  And… Juanita was gracious enough to do a short video for Josh (Circle K president) that he presented at the Circle K meeting, thanking the "kids" for all their hard work, service and fundraising.  She "treated" them to two boxes of the chocolate bars that are used in fundraising events.  What a PROGRAM!!  We also were given 6 lovely books for auction- on the history of See's candy.. so look for those at our upcoming Oktoberfest and Holiday Auctions!!

And so…  with our meeting close to an end, BFE Pres. Denise announced a planned visit=0 Awith our own Dr. Alan Coe right after the meeting.  She, D. Wong, B. Fay and C. Fitch did drop in to visit.  Dr. Coe was delighted especially to see Bill and Charlie (calling Charlie "Grandpa")-  He loved receiving See's candy which he stated he would "Stash in his room".  He doesn't really enjoy being where he is, but he is being well taken care of.  A round of applause for our Pres. Denise, who thought of this great way to share time with all our members.

****NOTE OF IMPORTANCE:
Do remember our annual Scholarship luncheon is next week, May 5th.  Hopefully the weather will hold- and we will have sunshine and be able to eat out on the upstairs terrace.  Most importantly, we would LOVE to see a full house to honor our scholarship winners, their parents and counselors.!!!

Special Guest BillK from the Albany/El Cerrito club was introduced (he was here attending an earlier scholarship meeting—more on that later).  RevBill was the Secret Greeter and, except for those purchasing insurance, everyone had been friendly.

Debra announced that VJ has joined the club!  Welcome VJ.

VC reminded us that the April 28 meeting will be sweet!  A See's Candy Rep will be speaking and rumors are…there will be candy!  PrezDenise reminded us that dues are due.

CircleK Monica talked about the success (and fun) of Cazadaro, reminded us of their weekly meeting, and invited us to the Spring Banquet May 8 at 5:30, at top of Barrows.  Diane, Kenneth, Karen, Joe, JC, Nina, Cheriz, Alez, Josh and Tiffany made an impressive interclub.  All joined in song thanking us for all we do for them—rides and lunches and camaraderie and….ended with spelling out Kiwanis.

--The April basket was being passed around during all this time…$1.00 bought 1 ticket.  The lucky ticket:  Phuoc!
--Sunshine will visit Allen Coe after the meeting next week (arrangements allowing);  so if you can, stay a bit after the meeting and come with us to say "hi".
--VC announced our Board agreed to increase her budget.

Birthdays were noted:  Happy Birthday to Monica, BillH, Evie (yes, we sang).  JohnP's 54th anniversary was noted.  Thank you, JohnP, for your generous donation to the Foundation.

The scholarship committee has awarded $40,000 in scholarships to 7 graduating seniors in Berkeley, Albany and El Cerrito.  May 5 is the Scholarship Awards luncheon—the winners, their parents and counselors will join us in the celebration.

--Denise for all the hours of service NewBob does in San Francisco
--Linda for the quilt project going so well

The Speaker Time was dedicated to a Bake-Off; the criteria:  it had to be made with lemons.    The Treats:  VC's Tropical Lemon Cake, PrezDenise's Lemon Cookies, Debra's Lemon Bars, Bettye's Lemon Bars, Nina's Cupcakes, Duane's Velvet Lemon Cake (he says he did make it), Roberta's Lemon Jell-O.  The Winner:  VC!

No Messin' Around
In spite of the fact that a certain E. Levitch noisily walked in, a bit late (but paid his fines) and was loudly prou d that he was escorting his "special guest" Jessica, PrezFireX nevertheless got right to work with the important (so to speak) business of the day. We barely had time to acknowledge the hard(ly) working Team of the Day with S. Hearn selling tix, B. Rice leading his 1,000,001 vocal tribute, E. Goodman giving a thankful word, and…surprise… the Fine Box was manipulated by none other than Kenneth of the secret Circle K.
Then onward:
§  The Prez announced a Board Meeting this Thur starting @ 5:15 (or so!) at Chez Bliss.
§  J. Piercy announced yet another Board Meeting, this one being that of the Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation @ 5:30 at Chez Piercy. All are welcome, but call ahead to assure sufficient accommodations & supplies.
§  B. Carpenter announced yet two more Interclubs, first at the UC Berkeley Circle K regular meeting (with VC, DH, PK, T. Woo) and then at the DCM last week (with FB, BC, VC, DH). That makes 17 total for this year!
§  Yes, we are on a roll, but the same B. Carpenter further reminded us that PrezFireX has set a goal for this year of a Super Round Robin. "Whatzat?" emanated from the back of the room, and a rather

simple explanation was provided: In addition to a "round robin" of all the clubs, each member of our club must participate in at least one of the Interclubs. Got it? So get out there, all you lazy folks!
§  Membership Chair D. Wong announced a very large turnout at the last Dine Out that may have resulted in a very special surprise that may occur before the end of today's meeting (Shhhh, stay tuned)
§  PrezFireX announced a new fund-raising idea – another BK Cookbook! She passed around the last edition, from a few years ago, and admonished all to gather family favorite recipes and others and bring them in to our next meetings.
§  P. Khong announced an alternative event (to the Cazadero expedition) this Sat from 10 to 2 pm for Pediatric Trauma Doll Making at Chez Bliss (Lunch included)
§  Sign-ups were passed for the YEAH Cook-a-Meal event on Wed Apr 29
§  B. Lowman announced that 55 quilts will be distributed at the Kaya Mena Senior Center on May 8 & 22
§  V. Carpenter bought some kinky pictures of her & hubby Bill, but promised there was no overt kissing or other inappropriate behavior (oh, sure!)
§  Final review and evaluation of Scholarship Applications is taking place with final results at a Committee meeting next Tue at 11:00 at the City Club.

'Round the Circle K.
Next it was time for our much-awaited regular Circle K report by none other than good ol' Monica. She introdu ced a few others including Dino, Josh, Kenneth AND Vijay (more on him later). Among many other things –
§  Last weekend they had a booth on campus in support of some worthy cause at some worthy event AND they had a memorable picnic event, too!
§  Next weekend is Cazadero! They can't wait!!!…AND they have a middle school project at the same time (yep, they have enough members!)
§  Then there's Relay for Life on May 2 – 3 @ Edwards Stadium on the UC campus
§  …. And then, there's another regular meeting tonight, and of course another Interclub opportunity for us – see you there!
 The Cazadero Expedition!
Our ol' reliable (??) Sec'y J. Rosano (event coordinator/project planner extraordinaire) then stood up to tell us that EVERYTHING is a GO for our weekend of the year…at Camp Cazadero! There will be a grand total of 46 people (from BK & CK), and all preparations are made. The advance party of project leaders and other misfits plan to arrive early Friday afternoon (if they don't get lost). Since it's so much easier than our old camp site, they better not!
Then another ol' reliable, V. Carpenter, reminded everyone of the fantastic opportunity to take culinary lessons in the archaic tradition of making Onion Pie (and eat it, too!).

H/S $$$$
§  Alan of Circle K paid to announce the Golden Gate Band's picnic at Tilden Park on May3
§  J. Rosano hinted of a secret concert that just may occur Sat night at Cazadero
§  B. Carpenter was so happy (yes, five big smackaroos worth)  about some nagging "stones" that he no longer has

§  V. Carpenter was excited that the CK will be selling popcorn & goodies at an upcoming "Swap Meet" at a certain Ace hardware somewhere in Berkeley
§  P. Khong announced a Key Club picnic on Sun, Apr 26 @ Marina Park in San Leandro – BK support (drivers, etc) is needed!!
§  B. Fay & E. Goodman will be q uite involved with Cal Day this weekend in Berkeley… and that's their excuse for not making it to Cazadero (they suggests it not be on the same weekend in the future!
§  E. Levitch revealed that he is being "excluded" from (not allowed to attend) the Cazadero project – Can this be! Or is it just an excuse…you never know with Ed…
A Solid Program
Right on topic and very timely, we were privileged to have David Wagner, Director of Cazadero Music Camp, as our speaker today. David is ecstatic to have a new partnership with Berkeley Kiwanis and can't wait to taste Onion Pie. He acknowledged how much the Kiwanis scholarships have been appreciated and gave many examples of those campers who were so lucky to attend only because of our scholarships. He went on to emphasize how much pressure is getting put on Non-Profits as a result of the economic crisis and how much more they will be expected to do over the next year. Our new partnership will help greatly with this burden. He can't wait (as we can't) for next weekend!
A Final PS
And a huge surprise, PrezFireX announced that the much afore-mentioned Vijay, by the end of the meeting, managed to complete his application to join the Berkeley Kiwanis Club!
And then our creative Prez came up with another idea (while looking at the plethora of fresh lemons brought in by J. Piercy) – a Lemon Recipe Cook-Off!  Yes, no less than five chefs signed up to bring exotic lemon concoctions (pies, tarts, cookies, drinks ??) for a fierce competition at next Tue's meeting. Be there, for delicious tastings!
And a final Farewell: Remember Uncle Sa m tomorrow, April 15! Happy New (Tax) Year!
