Our favorite maestro B. Rice and his lovely bride Esther arrived home
from a couple of weeks away, and scholarship winner Amanda Wilmsen is
back home for the summer from Pomona in SO. CA. A fellow Kiwanian from
the Southern town of Oakland, Russ Aubry, dropped by as well. Chino
Green, recent graduate of UCB, joined us for a special event- more later
on that!!
Hitting you up for lunch money at the back table (it really is the back
table since it is at the back of the room!!) were R. Bliss & VC and
maybe others. B. Rice was joined midway through leading GBA by F. Bliss
on the violin. Then FB led us in a booming, active rendition of the
Hokey Pokey.
J. Piercy gave a short invocation with thanks for Kiwanis, the cooler
weather, and asking for help in locating his sweater. The fine box was
left alone for much of the meeting- and then BFE Pres. Denise discovered
that no one had been assigned to take it around.
Circle K put in an appearance in the form of Mimi, Kenneth, and Nina!
They are busy as usual- with Adopt a Creek, Cookie baking for Soldiers
(and themselves), "Bay to Barkers"- at Golden Gate Field,
and a single service project this coming Friday and Saturday 10am- 6pm
both days at a school in Oakland.
Think some Bkers will be out helping at that event
.
Well then, the Blisses are celebrating 39 years of wedded bliss… and a
check for our foundation is forthcoming. Someone of well known quality
purchased a new badge as he wasn't happy with the old one- We all hope
plenty went into the fine fire box for that, since he ended up carting
it around today as he forgot to ask anyone else to do it.
Several notes of interest coming along for you to enter into your
Kiwanis and Social and Work calendar!!
Aug. 3: Dine Out at Café Casa- a wine bar and variety of food Café.
Located at 3136 Sacramento, about 3 blocks past Ashby. Special on the
menu for us to try out is an Oatmeal Stout Milkshake. This is a GREAT
time for any of us to get to visit with any of us who cannot make it to
our regular meetings very often- and to bring guests who might be
interested in a club such as ours. Also- Circle Kers tend to gravitate
there as well!! So come on out for a night of fun!! And.. Dine Outs
will be the place to be seen with D. Wong who is moving to Fremont for
her new job- and won't make it to regular meetings anymore.
Aug. 10 & 24: YEAH sandwich making at S. Hearn's abode- 11:00ish…
Aug. 13-15: District Convention in San Diego includes a Division dinner
on Friday night in Old Town.
Aug. 29: Oakland Kiwanis tribute to B. Payne.
Spengers in Berkele
y. Park 5:01 or after for 3 validated free parking
hours!
Sept. 10: Installation of LTG and Awards night- Elio's in San Leandro.
VC begs for you all to attend this. Happy No Host hour 6pm.. dinner
7pm.
Sept. 29: Installation of Team Bliss and Paradis at the Paradis palace
in Lafayette. NOT TO BE MISSED.
Great event of the day was the induction of our newest member, Chino
Green. It was mentioned that Chino has been through Berkeley High Key
Club and UCB Circle K, so active in many things Kiwanis!! She wanted to
join on her own- because she loves Kiwanis so much!! Welcome, Chino!!
See all our young ones!!!
As mentioned earlier, Amanda Wilmsen, a winner of a scholarship last
year, visited us today, bringing news of college life at Pomona. She's
majoring in anthropology with a minor in Spanish. She's busy with
studying and working two jobs on campus, one in the library. She's
active on a ballroom dance team, has made great friends in the coed
dorm, and states classes are a change from high school. Sounds like
fun!! Come again, Amanda!!
$$$$ were numerous, beginning with T. Paradis who mentioned
that remodel of the kitchen started "today at 4:00pm."- with no end date
in sight!!! B. Barnwell that m
onies were restored to the SF DA
program. R. Aubry enjoyed the visit of so many Kiwanians at his July
4th party- no fireworks to see as toooo foggy- and he's angry at his
neighbor and wants a lawyer!! J. Piercy ? that D. Leonard adjusted
his grandfather clock that now runs five minutes slow. D. L. thinks
J.P. is too sensitive!! C. Green delighted she is now a Kiwanian. D.
Wong sad this is her last official planned meeting as she moves Saturday
"way down south" to Fremont. P. Khong saw a KI advertisement on
hulu.com. VC had her own money but doesn't remember what she is
about.
Not to be overlooked, B. Carpenter reported that three interclubs took
place last week. A visit to Hayward/CV and then our Southern CA
contingency of Alex, Cheriz, James & Amy attended the Circle K District
meeting and a Circle K DCM meeting on the same day- gathering many
miles of travel for us!! There will also be an interclub tonight
(Tues.) at the Ice Creamery in Castro Valley- where the Hayward CV
meeting will be held at the same time as a fundraiser for Key Club. Go,
BC! Go, BC!
Speaker time: Our dual presidents are on a roll!! Tamara and Roberta
took over the microphone- yes, there was passing back and forth of that
instrument with NO arguing!!! They have promised total cooperati
on in
the running of the club next year!!! They are beginning on the "right"
foot!! Reemergence of a form which states:
"I, your name, WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO SERVE ON THE FOLLOWING COMMITTEES
FOR 2009-2010 WITH ENTHUSIASM AND PASSION"-
and we are invited to sign up for committees we would love to serve on.
We are NOT going to be placed on any old committee. SOOOOO- if your
heart is set on being on or being in charge of a certain committee or
job, NOW is the time to act!!! And so: General committees are as
follows:
CLUB ACTIVITIES
YOUTH SERVICES
STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
COMMUNITY SERVICE
MEMBERSHIP
FUND RAISING
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS
For a list of all sub committees: Contact Roberta or Tammy for a copy
of the list they passed out!! There is LOTS to choose from, and even
blank lines for "new" sub-committees if you are creative and passionate
about something!! They would like responses and sign-ups by August 11,
2009!!!! Channel your energy and sign up!!!
Let's all do our very best to support these two young women as they lead
our Berkeley club to greatness!!!
And (comment from your LTG elect VC)- PLEASE sign up to be a part of
MEMBERSHIP and GROWTH. A goal for our Division is 50+ members to bring
the Division back up over 300. WE CAN DO IT!!!
And thus another meeting comes to a
close. The pledge was led by our
BFE Pres. Denise, followed by the ringing of the bell, and we were gone
into the wonderful fresh air of a cool summer day!
