KIWANIS  CLUB      u       Hands of Service      u      BERKELEY,  CA

We had a pretty good crowd today with Frank taking care of the tix and Oscar
serving up the chicken and veggies.
Don't know why but Madam Pres got
the meeting off to a late start.  Phuoc took
care of the singing with a very good tempo
(for us!).    With Bettye blessing everyone
in existence, we were off and running.

Lots of reports:
INTERCLUBS—
We had two this past week, Hayward/CV
on 11/9 and DCM on 11/10 at Brennans.
We'll be at Richmond on Wed. next and
maybe Davis on 1/13.   We'll go any place to get some interclub credit!!!!!

RIF—
We've got four (4) sections slated for Wed. & Thurs.  11/17 & 11/18.  If you've got a little time, Virginia could use your help.  845-0410.  This a fun way to spend half a day!!

MEETINGS—
Our monthly Bd. of  Directors meeting is
scheduled for Wed. 11/17 at S. Hearn's home at 5:30 pm.  Another fun way to spend
an evening!!

NOTE—
Next week's meeting 11/23 will be at Washington School at 11:45.  After lunch
we will join school personnel to dedicate
the newly built "Kiwanis Arbor".  This is your chance to see the craftsmanship and
labor provided by several of our members.
No meeting at the City Club next week!
Got it,  Ed?

UPCOMING EVENTS—
Two guests from the Oakland Club were present to announce their Holiday Auction
on 12/6 at the Park Plaza Hotel.
Berkeley's Holiday Auction is, of course,
a week later on 12/14 at the BCC, as usual.
There will be, as usual, a guest auctioneer.

TODAY'S PROGRAM—
Our own Kiwanis Int'l  Trustee, Roberta
Bliss,  presented us with a slide production describing " What is a Trustee".  Unfortunately,  there are some of us who aren't really sure, yet.  It is going to take a few years for all this to come to fruition.
This has been depicted as a "money saver",
with the likes of less travel, less meeting,
etc.

Have a good one, my friends.  jr

Newsletter 110910

Opening
Phuoc started us out on a very low God Bless America pitch.  One person was heard to comment, "Finally, in my range!"  Bill Fay did a nice blessing and we were off.  Trustee Roberta tended the fine box, starting with insurance for the secret greeter.  Sandy was the greeter and claimed Virginia didn't shake but an argument ensued with no winners.

Holiday Auction December 14!
We were reminded by President Denise that Evie, Sandy, John and Duane have already started to build the holiday auction baskets.  Bob Barnwell made suggestions that we solicit gym memberships, spa treatments, butcher shop gift cards.  He's got letters ready to support the effort and even volunteered to go with another member to make the sale.  Way to go, Bob…now it is up to us to contact him and our favorite shops.

Washington School Final #3
The arbor is almost almost done.  The final touches will be put on this Thursday, at 2 p.m.  Principal Rita Kimball has been most welcoming of Berkeley Kiwanis.  Denise commented on last week's Kollegiate photos of the project for which the editor took credit until it was pointed out by his dear wife Roberta that she took the photos.

Letter from Scholarship Winner John Piercy read a terrific letter from one of our scholarship recipients.  She is going to Yale and has completed two months.  During that time she has joined a dance company, museum, attends classes, works, goes to speakers & performances.  In short, she's taking it all in and loving it.  She'll be back in December, but is very appreciative of the Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship.  Her name?  Melia Ungson.  Yep, that's right…our own member Chris's daughter.  Chris is volunteering in his son's school on Tuesdays so cannot attend our meetings, but he actively participates in BK projects!

Circle K Activities!
Shera reported John, Chris, Diana, Kenneth present at today's meeting from UC Berkeley Circle K.  A sampling of their activities:  FTC in Sonora, Loaves & Fishes homeless meal, Chaparral House games, Cal Game concessions, and envelope stuffing.  An annual Thanksgiving dinner will be hosted on Big Game day by Virginia for those not leaving town for the holiday.  Laura Redmond is asking for college level novels to be donated for the Better World Books program.  At 7 pm on Monday November 15, Circle K is hosting an off duty soldier in room 88 Dwinelle Hall.  To get there, go through Sather Gate and turn left into the right side of the big building and go down the stairs on the right.  Denise auctioned a T-Shirt and Hat emblazoned with "Support our troops

Denise gave Jack a moving introduction.

He then regaled us with his life story, particularly his one and a half year stint in professional baseball where he played with Billy Martin.  St. Mary's college followed, then Naval Air at Pensacola and Alameda.  He was sent to Japan, then Korea, flying reconnaissance over the China Sea.  He spent Easter 1953 in a life raft in the Yellow Sea, having ditched his airplane.  On Jack's tour of duty on the Hornet, the schedule was 12 hours on, six off.  An old buddy asked if he'd like to introduce the Japanese to American baseball.  He did just that.

Jack felt "watched over" as during his tour we lost a lot of planes and good guys.  It was at the officer's club in Kaneohe that he learned of Denise's birth.  He announced to the guys that he was the proud father of a 14 pound six ounce girl…Whoops, the other way around!

Finally, his dad said, "Kid, get a real job".  Being an Italian patriarch, that is exactly what he did.  Thirty years later he retired from the Berkeley Fire Department.  Jack, thank you for your service.
