Newsletter 092810

At this, the last meeting of the 2009-2010 year of Kiwanis, both of our ½ Presidents were present.  What a treat!  And… we met upstairs in the room we used to inhabit all the time.  And we had a new server, Jose, who learned very early on the particulars of our club members!  Lunch ticket seller was ½ Pres R. Bliss, ½ Pres T.Paradis called the meeting to order, P. Khong led us in a rousing on-pitch rendition of BGA, ½ Pres R. Bliss gave the invocation, J. Rosano gave up the fine box to D. Leonard (I think!?!), and we were off and running.

It was a great pleasure to see S. Chun again- that's three weeks in a row, and as stated by someone, a tie with A. Paradis for "perfect" attendance!!!  B. Lowman brought a guest (I did not get her name), a lovely lady who met Bettye at Solano Stroll and was interested in all the things our group does.  GREAT!!

CIRCLE K's report was given by Flo as Shera was unable to make it today.  They are teaching young kids volley ball (and there were lots of new Circle K members at that event), will be teaching kids how to make ice cream, will be presenting their annual Key to College for high schoolers, went to Emeryville for a social I think, participated in swim-a-mile, and have Krazy Kompetition coming up soon.  They are asking for financial and/or food supplies for that event.  Sounds like they are off to a tremendous start for the fall season.  FTC will be the first weekend in November.  Flo did have an interclub of Circle Kers with her today!

COMMITTEE REPORTS OF SORTS

OKTOBERFEST is coming up THIS Saturday, the 2nd of October.  There are 5 folks making potato salad, same recipe- will they all turn out the same?!
A number of auction items, including filled baskets from S. Silvera and a great animated musical Yulesteiner Brewery from your local ACE Hardware store.  Also our famous 50/50 drawing and a prize for best costume.. so come prepared!
Beer and Wine, famous cooking by Adele, and help from Berkeley Key Club and Circle K- all for a great afternoon and evening…  don't forget… a super band!!!
INSTALLATION of new officers will be next Tuesday evening at the Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley, located on Gilman Street.
INTERCLUBS are now up to a total of 45 by the time of the printing of this Kollegiate.  Thanks to B. Carpenter and those who go to interclubs!!  We did win the two Division trophies for interclubbing.  We are unstoppable!!
The WASHINGTON SCHOOL project is going along well.  J. Piercy was thrilled with the assistance of new member C. Ungsten, D. Wong and her friend John, B. Skrak, E. Levitch, D. Parnell and D. Leonard +++ 16 Circle Kers.  I think there were plenty of hands!!!
SUNSHINE is wonderful, and we had a lovely letter from Esther Rice thanking us for the kind words at the memorial for Bob Rice.  There were lots of wonderful memories of Bob and all that he did for others in his lifetime.

And there was time for JL$$:

P. Khong J$$ this past weekend's Key Club RTC which went very well, discovering that a poker buddy friend was good friends with B. Rice, L$$ for Golden Bears!  B. Barnwell $$ for SF trying to make public transit more user friendly- but horrible rush hour problems.   Circle Ker John ??$$ for driving with E. Levitch (scary??).  J. Piercy $$ happy for Washington School progress.   Betty's guest had J$$ for meeting everyone here and for this beautiful building. B. Lowman for her guest and for our speaker, Beth.  J. Rosano L$ that the Golden Bears stink, for missing last week's steak feed at Tilden Park but J$ for his "BBQer in training", P. Khong, who got glowing remarks for the fabulous steak!!   E. Levitch $$$ for maintaining dual membership with the Albany EC Club.  D. Leonard J$ for the columns being level.  B. Fay J$ that the Dr. says he will live.  J. Egeberg  J that his liederhosen has been delivered and amazed that B. Rice had  over 70 years of married live, 20 with Esther and 50+ with his first wife during his 99 years here on earth.  AMAZING!!  S. Chun for his three weeks of perfect attendance.  Speaker Beth J for being in Berkeley and at our Kiwanis meeting.  B. Carpenter was delighted with his 25 year Legion of Honor award he received today.

OUR SPEAKER!!

Yes, to top this all off, we did have a wonderful speaker.  Beth Meyerson was introduced by B. Barnwell.  She is the Director of Health Services in Berkeley, having arrived to this position about 8 weeks ago from Colusa County.  There are approximately 160 employees in the Department, headed up by the Office of the Director and 8 staff.  There are three main services:  Mental Health, Public Health, and Environmental Health.  The primary source of funding is through the City General Fund and other state funding, and the lack of a state budget is making funding "scary"!  Each Health Service has specific areas it covers (lengthy).  Programs that have been moved out of Health Services are Senior Services and Employment Programs, both of which are now under the Dept. of Housing and Community Services.  Beth is learning more about Health Services as the days pass on.  It was a pleasure having her visit us with information!
And.. Thank You, Bob, for bringing us programs that keep us informed about the goings on in our city!

Upcoming OCTOBER speakers are as follows:
October 5:  Berkeley's installation dinner at
                        Pyramid Brewery
October 12: Diane Tran
October 19:  unknown
October 26:  Lyisha Johnson, Chabot Space Center

YOUR incoming President Denise is busy getting her committees in order.  If YOU have a specific committee you would like to be on and have not been asked, PLEASE let Denise know.  She can direct you in the right direction!!!

Your Secretary, F. Bliss, would like you to turn in your service hours for his end of month report due to the LTG Virginia and District by the 10th!!!  Let's get as many service hours recorded as possible!!

We leave you with a SAQOTW:

A Day for Robert Rice
1911 - 2010

It was a special day in honor of Bob Rice, who honored us with his presence on this planet for 99.5 years! There were many $$$ and tributes to Bob. More importantly, there is a special memorial event tonight at 6 p.m. at the Lawrence Hall of Science. B. Fay will speak to honor his long history of service to Berkeley Kiwanis. I'm sure we will have a full complement of Kiwanians and spouses there.

Twp huge trophies adorned the front table, and they turned out to be the annual Interclub awards – one for "most" and one for "distance" or whatever.

Circle K Shenanigans

K Family Chair Shera introduced our past favorite Diane and others. They amazed us all upon reporting that they manned a concession at the Golden Bear home football game last Saturday and brought in over $2,000! Then on Sunday they handled both a Walkathon event and also joined us at our booths for the Solano Stroll. Much fun to be
had by all. And lastly, tonight is their first General Meeting @ 7:00 in 2050 ELSB.

Oktoberfest 2010!!

J. Egeberg and D. Leonard reminded us that the greatest OKTOBERFEST outside of Germany will take place on OCTOBER 2, 2010. Flyers and tickets have been made available to the church goers and to our sister Kiwanis clubs. Only problem is our own members – no tickets available at lunch today, so they'll show up in your mailboxes soon! Everyone is getting out their costumes now…And bring in your Silent Auction items to D. Haughin's office.

Other Special Events

J. Piercy said that the Washington School Project is still on the move again, and passed out signups for the first major phase of pouring lots of concrete for the eight large foundations. This will occur on Sat, Sept 25, and lots of able-bodied Kiwanians and Circle K'ers are needed!

F. Bliss announced that the annual Tilden Barbeque will take place next Tuesday at 12 Noon, same place. Sign up and be there!

German Potato Salad Contest: D. Haughin was the clear winner! Her recipe will be made available to those volunteering for the Oktoberfest feast.

S. Hearn report: The YEAH shelter will open mid-November.  YEAH is offering volunteer orientation sessions for those who might be interested in helping at the shelter.  Kiwanis has volunteered for cooking for the past few years, and we hope to do it again in 10-11.  But, the good news is that there are more opportunities besides cooking.  Find all about it on one of these dates:

Newsletter 090710

Where did the beautiful summer weather go?  It isn't far away, just covered up for a couple of days!  Our lunchroom filled up slowly, but by the time ½ Pres. TP rang the bell there were plenty in the room!!  It was amazing to watch everyone shaking hands before the meeting.  There was an SG in the room- and when he finally stood up to call out those who had not been gracious, the only one he could catch was his own ½ Pres TP wife.  This editor did not see who paid the fine!

We were greeted at the ticket table by ??? (When I went up for tickets no one was there!)  Just back from 2 weeks at Tahoe (alone) was F. Bliss who led us in song, and J. Rosano gave a short invocation,  B. Lowman collected $$$ that landed in the fine box.  ½ Pres TP does not stand behind the podium; rather she grabs that microphone and wanders all over the room.

Circle K was represented by 5 members, and their report was given by Shera.  She introduced Florence, John, Chris & Kenneth.  They raised over $1000 this weekend between their annual garage sale and the concession stand at the CAL game.  They'll be busy this weekend, and they advertised the upcoming Krazy Kompetition North to be held on Oct 9th.  They are

seeking assistance with sodas, pizza, etc.. and VC suggests that BK should have a team!  This is an annual event, and is a fundraiser for them.

Committee Reports were short and sweet!
1.     J. Piercy noted that the Washington School project is underway.  He is looking for some to come load and unload a truck of wood on Friday at E. Levitch's place, and the following weekend on Saturday he'll need workers all day at the school.  Contact JP for more information
2.     B. Lowman noted that South Berkeley Senior Center will have their holiday party in December.  It might be a great time for us to go visit etc.
3.     B. Carpenter reported on an interclub at Alameda last Wednesday.  Attending were Paradis (A & T) & Carpenters.
4.     Incoming Pres. D. Haugin says:  SOLANO STROLL is this Sunday, the 12th.   Tickets and Flyers are out for Oktoberfest, being held on Oct. 2nd.

JLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$
We always have many JL$ and today was no exception.  A. Paradis gave $$$ for the Cal Bears, 3 Kiwanis meetings in a row, and his wife.  E. Levitch $$$ hoping that the Circle Kers who were in the house today will come to help load and unload the gazebo wood this Friday!  John of Circle K was delighted with all the funds they raised this weekend- for the children of the world!  B. Barnwell very happy for training our new members with J. Piercy and D. Leonard.  Then he was off to get ready for a busy event in his area – giving out awards and certificates to folks who have made a difference.  D. Haughin delighted that our new member Chris has signed up for two service projects (blood drive and Solano Stroll).  J. Piercy $$$ for the pleasure of working with E. Levitch.  F. Bliss $$$ for his two weeks of vacation, missed his bride, and that she will be back tonight.  S. Hearn very sad she will be missing Oktoberfest.

SPEAKER?????
Our speaker was one of our own- Sandy Hearn.  In case you did not know much about how Labor Day came about.. Sandy informed us well with a quiz on this "holiday".  Just a few thoughts…The idea of a Labor Day is attributed to Pater J. McGuire who introduced it at a meeting of the Central Labor Union.   It was the Pullman Strike which ultimately helped result in President Grover Cleveland's approving Labor Day as a National Holiday.  The first Labor Day Parade was held in New York City on a Tuesday in 1894, and Oregon was the first state to grant Labor Day legal status as a Holiday.  Today the significance of Labor Day is many and varied.  It is officially a day to honor workers, but now we might

think BBQ, a new school year is starting, or it's the last long week of the summer.  Thank you, Sandy!!!

A SHORT RECAP OF UPCOMING EVENTS!!!

 beginning at E. Levitch office.
Contact J. Piercy for more info.

                   ITEMS, PLEASE!!!
