Newsletter June 24 2008

Nice crowd today, but only 16 lunches paid; (1 was discounted Circle K; 3 were our program group, and Val Nereo who came as Frank's guest because she is interested).  Boy, our Membership Chair takes off for 2 months and we get a "live one"  Thanks, Frank, look forward to visiting with Val when I'm not loaded with substitute Kollegiate editor and Ticket Seller.

Jeff is back from his sojourn to Croatia, but unfortunately is NOT "fit as a fiddle".  Seems as though he caught a "bug" while over there - even spending a full day in bed - but had to take to his bed when he got home and is still on the mend.  He did get a couple of days in Italy as planned, but no report on how he (and his bug) fared down there.  Now he "owes me big" for taking on this chore, too.  Come to think of it, he probably owes you, the reader, more!!

Well, how was GBA today?  Verrry interesting, as they say.  Bob R. did his usual good job of directing.  Come to think of it, does he sing as "leader" or just conduct?  Anyway, somehow Borden was asked to set the pitch, and boy did he!!  Someone closed the door into the hallway!  Surprisingly, it seems to have worked as we followed along pretty well.

Besides Esther Rice, we also had a couple of Circle K visitors.  Rocky and Alex.  Alex rattled off all the stuff they are doing, even though it is vacation time.  As usual, I got no details, but they certainly manage to keep more than busy. I did catch that one of their services was acting as counselors at a camp for kids 5-11.

Pres Kong mentioned that there still are some checks not yet received for YPSO ticket sales, and he hopes that can be wrapped up next week.  So far, it looks like $761 has been turned in, but that's subject to audit.

Big event last week; conversion of the unused upstairs of Best Equipment (Fire) which was turned into a quilting factory, now available with special ventilation.  (When one volunteer went to clean the windows, the first pane he touched fell out (and broke).  That was probably the end of the window washing, but now there are plans to hang curtains to hide the dirty windows!

JP reported that our contacts at the Berkeley School District resulted in another potential project; Washington School has received a $5000 grant to build a potting shed (aka "Outdoor Classroom") and he and Ed L. have an appointment to check it all out this

evening.  More later when details are known.

Linda also reported on the East Bay Quilting Center "barn raising" Friday and Saturday.  She rated it a Very Happy $ success and encourages all to visit.  Her Bill will be in minor surgery next week, but as she said "At 80, all surgery is major."

Bob B was H$ that his doctor has finally released him to go back to aerobics and he passed around a pix of the class to give us an idea of why he enjoys it so much.  He also was H$ that one of our speakers today (Joan) was a former neighbor back in his youngster days in Kensington.

There will be a test next week to see if you paid attention at the meeting or as you read this or if you even look at the Club Calendar (It's in your membership book, "Duh").  You should know that the date for our installation (but more satisfying, Phuoc's DEinstallation) is September 23.  Denise reports that it is planned for a big evening at El Charro's in Emeryville, and will feature a Mexican Buffet. If that gives you Heartburn (Yuk, Yuk!) let Denise know.

Phuoc also noted that in Debra's absence he will be "leading" the July Monthly Dining Out (if it can be called "dining") at Bobby G's Pizzeria on University Ave.  I missed the time, but the date is July 1, so you have time to get the details from him.

JP was S$ that he will miss the next 2 meetings and the "Dining Out" due to a boat cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg.  Actually they were H$ because he just loves Tacos!  Those do come from a pizzeria, don't they?

Sandy was called up to the mike to introduce our program.  Actually, she introduced Maryann Masnan, Marketing Director for Stagebridge, an NPO which is the nation's oldest (in existence, not participant's ages!) Senior Stage Company.  But don't let the title "Senior" lead you to conclude that it's a bunch of Seniors that puts on plays.  Rather, the function of Stagebridge appears to be getting Seniors (and anyone else interested) to do "Story Telling" and move on to stage shows if they wish.

To this end, they provide classes on acting, playwriting, improvisation, story telling, and even singing.  They have an on-going musical revue "Never Too Late" which tours to senior centers and residences, health fairs, and other community events.  We were scheduled to have a "Storytelling Concert".

Maryann then asked Billy Pond, a volunteer participant to talk a bit about how he had become involved and what it has done for him.  And then, he told a story.  Rather, he opted to give us a poem which was about being a cowboy and the impact of rain.  It was a great presentation (Billy has a slight cowboy drawl and look, including suspenders) and was loudly applauded.

Joan Mueller (Bob's former neighbor – see above) then took her turn.  She freely admitted she could never memorize a poem as Billy does, so improvises stories in her own words.  She told us one about a little girl who strove to be "the most successful", a snail and 3 wishes.  She demonstrated how she tailors a story to fit her audience.  It was all fun.

We Missed seeing YOU.                          jp

Newsletter From June 10, 2008

It was a warm day outside (and inside) the BCC where we found three tables full of chatting Kiwanians.  When the group from the upstairs bar joined us, the fourth table filled up, lunch was served, and the following reports and information were gleaned.

Pres. Khing Khong thanked the ticket seller, D. Haughin, and called upon B. Rice to lead us in our infamous rendition of GBA (this editor noticed the speaker smiling and heard B. Price at certain parts of the song!).  J. Rosano gave a short invocation thanking for the weather, fellowship, and for whatever lies ahead.
J. Piercy was assigned the fine box; he must be an okay poker player as "the table" filled up fairly well today.

PKK called on Circle K to give a report on things going on in their organization.  Alex and Gail were joined by two others;  they continue to be busy with projects here and down south.  This past weekend saw cooperation between them and BK while working at the Edible Garden at King Middle School.  Folks worked on weed pulling & a garden shack, and comments were made that there are lots of fruits, veggies and snails which are fed to the chickens!

UPCOMING

JJJJLJJJJLJJJJLJ$$$$

D. Haughin was JJJ for many reasons- the main one being that her dad, J. Rosano, will be honored as citizen of the year for Albany.  Great, Jack!!!!
She also enjoyed immensely the work project at the edible garden, and now knows the difference between weeds and herbs!!!

D. Leonard L that he had signed up for the work party and didn't show.  PKK so JJ for the work party, and I think so excited over one snail????  D. Wong told a story about a bird attacking her head.  J. Piercy  told a story about Traudel feeding the blue jays- then finding one in the house that pooped in three places before flying away.  B. Barnwell a L$ that he left early to get to City Hall in SF.  Then L. Hannawalt told a story about feeding pigeons on her balcony in Oakland- the birds created a scene out of "The Birds" and this is the real reason she married B. Hannawalt and moved to SF.  S. Hearn L$ that she missed the edible garden work party, but J that she got rid of 5 or 6 old cameras at a camera show.  J. Piercy told another story about buying a new vacuum, putting the old one (with new bags and a sign that said "works") out on the sidewalk- and it was gone the next day.  VC added many JJJ$$$$ for the basket of homegrown veggies from D. Haughin's yard- she can't wait to try the head of cabbage with the corn beef that is presently in her refrig.  And then there were JJ$$ thanking D. Wong for putting together the edible garden work party- Our young Kiwanian on the go!!

As for reports from committees:

Interclubbing was a success this week with an interclub at the Richmond theater night- dinner at Hotel Mac followed by THE FULL MONTE- which was outstanding-
No report from Social.  No report from RIF.
As stated earlier, Fundraising committee please come early to the June 17th meeting- and head for the bar!!  Scholarship committee had two thank yous- one from Amanda and one from Madeline's Mom- (who was very impressed with our club).

Our Speaker
was introduced by S. Hearn.  Roberto Giannicola is an Italian who grew up in Switzerland.  He holds a degree in Business Management and Admin. as well as a diploma in Humane Education.  He has worked as a technology consultant for both small and large companies.  From his work in finance and high-tech he came to realize that a green mindset not only helps the environment but also raises the bottom line of a company.  Becoming green is a

highly motivational process that improves both the quality of life and quality of work.

Roberto founded Provokare Presentations, a company dedicated to inspire and provoke changes for a better work environment and healthier life, in 2007.  He believes that the real key is that each person needs to act as a socially responsible person.  "We all have the potential to change ourselves and the world we live in."  We can be inspired to see the impact that we each have on all the things that touch our lives.  An interesting talk!  Thank you, Roberto.

Our pledge was led by D. Leonard, the gong was gonged by PKK- and we meandered out into the gorgeous sunshine- for what hopefully was the remainder of a great day for each and every one of us.  We missed you if you were unable to come.

SAQOTW:

"It is easy to dodge our responsibilities,
but we cannot dodge the consequences
of dodging our responsibilities.

Newsletter from June 3, 2008

Right on the button, 15 minutes late (we advertise at 12:15 start – boy could the President make money!) Prez Khing Khong got us going with a splattering of applause for "The Greatest Club in Berkeley" and a rousing rendition of GBA led by none other than Bob Rice.  I didn't have the heart to look at Mary Sue Wallace, a guest of Linda, to see her grimace as we sang.  Jessica, though, I could see and she grimaced.  But that convinced her that we should not sing Happy BD a bit later on, and she was willing to pay for that!

Then we had a short (on words) but long (on time) Invocation by JR and the Prez got right down to work, awarding the "Fine" Box (and it is a fine one) to "the other" Bob, and (after extracting a few insurance payments) identifying Duane as the Secret Greeter.  Duane had no one to finger for not shaking since he had actually gone around shaking hands, but somehow was not awarded a fine.  And Frank tried to get in late, but free, but it didn't work.

Besides Jessica (see above) we had a birthday to celebrate with Bob Skrak (today) and a 7 year perfect attendance for Evie and a 9 year for Roberta.  There was also some noise about Bob being just back from a long drive to LA to receive a couple of more ice skating awards – one was even for the now closed Berkeley Iceland,  There is rumor

that Bob has offered to volunteer his time to run that rink if it is ever opened again in his lifetime!!

Linda announced a great success with her Memorial Day Weekend "Quilt – In", but Bill was not quite so happy because he was afraid all that Circle K traffic in the attic was going to shake down the house.  Linda then proceeded to load several of us down with materials to be washed and dried and returned "neatly" folded for quilt cutting and making.  She had 25 folks show up over that weekend (not for the full 3 days!!) and reports 195 volunteer hours for her pet project,.

Debra announced a work party at the MLK, Jr. Middle School Edible Garden from 8:30-12  this Saturday (you can arrive a "bit" late, but not at 10!)

Alex was the sole rep of Circle K today.  He reported a heavy volunteering load last week, but a pretty quiet schedule ahead.  If you have any ideas, let him know.  The troops will begin to filter back in again next week.

Grumpy tied to get Linda fined for letting her guest, Mary Sue Wallace (former Kiwanian at Grand Lake) show up wearing a Kiwanis badge which she (Mary Sue) had purloined when the club folder.  It didn't

work, though.  Linda explained that Mary Sue was undertaking a large role in the Kiwanis quilt program, and Khing Khong folded with a whimper.  Grumpy just growled.

Happy/Sad promoted a lot of comments.  Poor Frank is still sad that his "loppers" have not returned from Gualala.  Wonder how he will blaze trails without those loppers?  Evie though the Richmond annual dinner/theater night was great.  Of course the Hotel Mac dinner was great, but she was also impressed by the Masquers' presentation.  Something about "Sex in the City" – or did I get my titles mixed and that show (movie) was on Duane's favorite list.  Bill Fay Happy to be traveling to his extended family, last week to Boston and next week to S.Cal for a high school graduation,  Bob Rice was happy, but I can't read my notes; Gimpy was happy for the scholarship awards last week and the meal;
And Debra was happy that we all are checking the web site
for all the latest news.  Aren't we??

Sandy, who was the ticket seller and meeting "in chargee"  had invited a rep from the Alameda County Food Bank (ACFB) to tell us what goes on.  Come to find out that Tod Vedock is actually a volunteer at the Food Bank.  He "made it" with the communications company he founded and then sold, so he now volunteers at all kinds of places to "fill his time".

The ACFB is actually located off Hegenberger Road near the Oakland AP and consists of a few offices and a humongous warehouse.  He emphasized that the ACFB is not a kitchen but is, in fact, a bank dealing in food rather than money.  They get all kinds of donations from businesses, farmers,

markets, and citizens, then supply charity kitchens and pantries with food products which they in turn develop into nutritional meals or packages for folks to take home and prepare themselves.  Yep, nutritional.  They do not deal in "soda" and similar junk foods.

Tod noted that the folks helped by food from the ACFB are not just the homeless who are provided meals from the charity kitchens, but many (about one third) are just folks who can't make the monthly income spread to cover rent, utilities, clothes, transportation (I paid $4.539 a gallon today), etc. and so would go hungry between paychecks if it weren't for the free food distributions.  The ACFB distributes an average One Million pounds of food a week to 40,000 persons, one-half of them children.  Because of its close association with farmers and food dealers the Bank is able to parlay a One Dollar donation into $7 worth of food.

Do they need help??  Of curse!  ACFB is a
charity and is not supported by the County or any other government agency (except by occasional grants).
1. Volunteer (3 Hr Shifts M-F)  Groups
can be accommodated with prior planning.
2.  Donate food.
3.  Donate Cash.

There was talk afterwards and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that we and UCB Circle K are setting up volunteer sessions.

I was going to look up next week's program on the web site, and I will.  But instead of telling you, I suggest you go to the site yourself so as to become familiar with it.  In the future we may just post this (it is posted now) and not bother with e-mail.  Wouldn't that be "modern"!!!
CU next week.                                            jp
