CircleK TOOK OVER the meeting today.

In anticipation of this event, PrezDenise quickly started the meeting, called on VC to lead us in what turned out to be a spirited GBA, and asked RevBill to lead the prayer—he called on God's blessings for President Obama, and for blessings on all of us as we change the world one child at a time.

InterclubBill announced interclub 7, a visit to the Kiwanis Club of Richmond January 14:  Frank, Roberta, BC, VC, RevBill, Evie, JohnP and Traudel.  Our own Evie was the featured speaker, on her trip to France.

The Sunshine Committee's first visit will be to Bob Brown this Friday.  RevBill is the contact.

That was all the time allotted for our PrezDenise.

Queen Monica   (yep, we were told we were to refer to all of "them" by their titles, Queen Monica and her court  of Lords and Ladies, or dire consequences would ensue….more on that later) took the podium, and greeted all of us.  She introduced her court:
Ladies—Monica, Tiffany, Kathleen, Minji, Tiffany, Nina, Amy, Maggie, Mimi
Lords—Alex, Joe, Chino, Cary, Rocky, Jason, Peter, James, Vincent, Kenneth, Vijay, Matthew, Chena.

Queen Monica then formally stated "the actions" that would lead directly to fines (fines that were

being constantly and conscientiously recorded by the CircleK'er at each table).  ; The rules:
a.        Call all CircleK'ers by the title of Lord or Lady
b.      Don't walk forwards
c.       No elbows on the table
d.      No yelling
e.       Not wearing Kiwanis badge
f.       No name calling
g.      Forget a name
h.      No standing when talking
We had been warned.  The pencils were ready to note infractions.

There were two Secret Greeters.  In fear, sales of insurance were astronomical!  Lord Peter and Lord Vincent chortled as they stood and pointed to many culprits.

Lord Vijay was introduced as the Auctioneer Extraordinaire, and he "lived up to his reputation."  What followed was the liveliest, the funniest, the c raziest meeting this scribe has ever attended.

While Lords and Ladies wandered around showing off the auction items, Lord Vijay auctioned off item after item.  You barely had to lift a finger (and no one dared pick up a cup of coffee) and it was noted as a bid.  Bidding was spirited.

Auction items (and, if the scribe could hear, the purchaser) were:
--Many packets of oatmeal raison cookies

--Jars filled with stars (VC).  VC noted that she will count the stars, sell raffle tickets next week, and the winner will get the stars.  The other winner, CircleK, will get the raffle money.
--Two boxes of scrumptious, large strawberries dipped in chocolate (Tammy)
--Random décor items (Roberta)
--More cookies
--Photo frame with hand drawn dragon, to be autographed (Phuoc)
--Oatmeal raison cookies (Jack)
--Banana bread make with love and sweat (a correction was made that the sweat was not added to the cookies) (JohnP)
--"Welcome" shelf (Jeff)
--Mystery package (VC).  Among the myriad of contents, a hula skirt and coconuts; both modeled by the purchaser (you had to be there….)
--Handmade Kiwanis pillow (Phuoc)
--Valentine Cake (Jack)
--A Joe concert (Den ise)
--Another Joe concert (Sandy)
--Picture of VC and BC puzzle (VC)
--Picture of Roberta and Frank puzzle (Tammy)
--Strawberry jello in wine glasses (Roberta)
--Champagne jello in champagne glasses (VC)
--Ballroom dance lessons (VC)
--Heart shape cake with special frosting (Phuoc)
--Coffee mugs, coffee, etc (Roberta)
--Apple pie (VC)
--Charlie Brown plant
--Cupcakes (Jeff)
--Handcrafted wine table (Roberta)
--Obama drawing

Apologizes if I missed an auction item or your purchase of one—all was so fast, so furious, so chaotic.

Our wallets were empty.  Congratulations to CircleK for the wonderful and thoughtful and special auction items.  And what a clever idea to wander around and show off the items before they were auctioned off.  A thank you to all the Kiwanians for your contribution to the Circle K Club.

But that did not conclude the meeting.  Under a chair at each table was an envelope.  Now, one

would expect a present, a treat, right?  So folks fought over those envelopes.  "Winners" were VC,
Phuoc and Sandy.  But wait—each was to come forward and do the dance noted on the card in the envelope.  VC did the chicken (well, acted like a chicken), Phuoc did a robot (the scribe thinks) and the winner by far, Sandy, did disco.

But we still had money? and time.  Happy and sad dollars were collected.
--JohnP that this event is just once a year
--Phuoc for the inauguration, CAL losing to the S university, and for winning a poker tournament in Reno
--Jack for "you guys are great!
--Ed for the fun luncheon with "the kids"
--Evie for an Obama celebration on the streets of Berkeley
--Jeff for Yosemite, a breakfast and a story that ended with "Go Bears"

Vijay turned the podium back to the Prez.  Applause was loud and long for the terrific job he did.  Vijay you were awesome.

Joe led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thank you again, Circle K'ers, for a great and fun meeting.

Newsletter 101309

What a gorgeous day to have a meeting at the Berkeley City Club!  Lovely sun, lovely bre eze, lovely folks, lovely food!!!  Greeting us at the ticket table was E. Goodman.  After moments of chit chat, the bell sounded and a quite lovely BFE Pres. Denise wielding the gavel tried desperately to bring us to order, with her expert fine collector, D. Wong, who was so happy to be carrying around that fire extinguisher fine box, seen collecting $$$$ right away from members who came in "lateish"!  Within another instant or two, B. Rice was leading us in GBA, and your editor V.C. gave the wonderfully short invocation of "tender mercies" which always reminds us of B. Hearn!

We had a lovely guest today, Amanda- one of our scholarship winners from last year who is a freshman at Pomona in Southern CA.  She has just finished her first semester, is not sure yet what she will major in, has taken some ballroom dancing, and is looking at joining Circle K when she gets more settled.  We received a chuckle when D. Wong asked about boys!!!

In the area of sunshine BFE Pres. Denise requested hands up for anyone who arrived at the meeting today due to a phone call from our "phone tree".  After lively discussion it was noted that members did call and leave messages on answering machines, and we were delighted to see E. Levitch & Jessica due in part to this phone tree!!   Another request from BFE Pres. D is a new group ready to go out and visit members who are unable for one reason or another to get to club on a regular basis.  Lots of interest in this idea, and four or five hands immediately went up to be a part of the group!

Committee reports as follows:
1. B. Lowman reported that diapers will be delivered soon to Vera Casey.  Painting of Salvation Army kettles will take place in February.
2. V.C. reported that RIF will take place Feb. 11 and 12.
3. B.C. reported an interclub at the DCM with B. & V., BFE Pres. Denise and D. Wong in attendance.  Tomorrow we will interclub with Richmond where E. Goodman will be the speaker (her trip to France).
4. D. Wong reported the "Dining Out" this past Wed. evening at the Meridian was attended by D. Wong, P. Khong, R. & F. Bliss & BFE Pres. Denise.  Would be great to see some other members join in.  Lots of discussions take place!!
5. P. Khong reported that Circle K will be taking over our Berkeley Club next week, Berkeley High will do the same in February and Oakland Tech after that.  BRING MONEY.

JLJLJLJLJLJLJL$$$$$$$$
There were so many JL dollars given as BFE Pres. Denise decided to ask everyone for them!!  Way to fill up that fire extinguisher!!
E. Levitch was delighted to be back, is feeling better, and brought Jessica with him- who also is J to finally be freed by E.L. to come!!!
P. Khong J for Ed and Jessica being here, and JJJ Go Bears for being in the Top 40 of something!!
B. Barnwell J for hosting a Western Addition breakfast and lunch on the 20th (inauguration day), and shared that he was at the inauguration of Pres. JFK in 1961- he had a banner to prove it!!
S. Hearn was very quiet; she is J that her retreat duties are almost over.

D. Wong might have a new new car (pearly white in color).  (That should bring in many new $$$ next week!!!)
F. Bliss told D. Wong that it is cheaper to insure a "pearly white" car- to which R. Bliss put in a L that this will bring in less money!!  She was, however, J for such a gorgeous day.
Steve (our speaker) was very J to be here.
Amanda (our scholarship winner) was J to be here, and "Thanks for the free lunch"!!!!
J.Piercy had a J $, but don't know what for.  Think it was for a clock not set correctly (see below).
B. Rice J that trees were cut down in his yard, letting in a lot more blue skies!!!
B. Fay was amazed that the fine collector, D. Wong, could hold both the fire extinguisher and her own wallet in one hand.
D . Leonard told B. Rice he was lucky not to live in Berkeley as it is probably politically incorrect to cut down trees!!!
J. Rosano J to see E. Levitch up and taking nourishment- and J to see a fuller house today.
J. Egeberg ?$ wondering who in this club can be the most grumpy!  Were there complaints about the transportation difficulties today????  (You had to be here!)
BFE Pres. Denise L that she gave J. Piercy such a hard time (see above) about not being there to pick up the three "folks" he brings to BK each Tuesday.
B.C. & V.C. didn't get asked to put=2 0in any money, so they didn't!!!

Another note from our BFE Pres. Denise: she is going to put an agenda for the meeting at the check in table each week.  Please sign up if you have a report to give during the meeting.  She hopes to format our meeting so that we have a few minutes to socialize before the speakers.

And speaking of speakers, Steve Grover enlightened us with his expertise of bridge building (and overpass and underpass, etc. etc!!).  Steve is an architect and designer among other things (his first "job" was as an actor at the age of 11 or so!!).  He is a graduate of UCB grad school where he started working on small projects.  Through a slide show of various projects we toured many of his projects, ideas, and successes.  He is very involved in bicycle and pedestrian "travel", and thus incorporates this in his plans.  He worked on the overpass for pedestrian/bike travel across I80- putting in a sidewalk for walkers and separate lane for the bicyclists.  He is also working on

bicycle parking at BART stations, providing denser parking for those who want this type of transit.&nb sp; You can check out this type of Bike Station at the El Cerrito Bart Station.  This was a very informative talk, and I am sure that engineers and architects understood a lot more than this editor did!!  Thank you, Steve.

And…  along that sunshine line
Keep warm and fuzzy thoughts for Sharon Silveira who had some minor surgery this Wed. morning.  She states the ceiling was moving from the meds they gave her… and she is now home in bed with a purring, warm cat!!
