Kollegiate 06/12/07

    June 12, 2007 Printer/ Mailer, Duane Leonard

On the move!, but we were a disorderly group today. Precipitated, in part, by the fact that the program chair had misplaced her sign-up sheet for meeting functions. [There is hope: it was found, later, under the Kiwanis Carpet in her car. But more about that later.] She had also left the bio information about the speaker at home. But, not to worry, we BK’ers rise to the occasion. Roberta took over at the ticket table without even being asked. (To realize the full nobility of the offer, note that she had also done it the week before. Thank you Roberta.) Bob Rice led us in song: Loud, but a bit off key at times. When asked if he would take responsibility for the quality of the singing, he could only say that “You can’t control that bunch.”

Since no one remembered who was supposed to give the invocation, Ed Levitch volunteered—and gave us one short and to the point. (Hoorah! for Ed.) Bettye thought she was the one who had signed up for the fine box, so she handled the re-tread box deftly.

We were honored with a visit from three Richmond Kiwanians ; and also three Circle K’ers. Joe wasn’t among them, being off somewhere on the east coast on vacation, but Gail came to the podium to remind us of the Great Car Wash on June 30th in the Pleasanton Wal-Mart parking lot. Also, they would appreciate donations to their Yard Sale to be held in September. Although their number was few this week, there may be more after the main summer session starts June 25. But she won’t be among them, because she is going to Chicago. She wants to know what she should see there. E-mail suggestions.

Our President, always on the look-out for the benefit of our members, gathered up some programs from the YPSO Pops concert on Sunday, and sold them at a discount to those who weren’t there. Only $5, while those who were there had paid the $15 admission. Actually, if you were not there, it was your loss. The kids sounded great! And two world premieres [Scribe was worried when she saw them in the program, as she finds most new music ghastly, but these were actually enjoyable.] and two chamber ensembles, including a soprano aria from Bach’s Cantata 180. Plus wonderful Ellington, Leroy Anderson, Mancini, and (of course) Sousa! Among the attendees: Bob Brown and family, Jennifer, and Leo Iodice (who manned the bake-sale table with Debra)

And speaking of Bake Sale… Debra, Denise, and Sandy baked, and Duane contributed, too. We had some left over home-made brownies, which were sold off (auctioned?) by Denise. Well, one good auction deserves another, and a freshly made jar of Virginia’s raspberry jam was offered. Bettye started things off, but it looked like she was going to lose out until our Prez gallantly stepped in, closed the auction and bought it for Bettye to take home.

Frank announced that on Saturday the 9th he had hosted a TAG (Together Achieving Growth) meeting for 5 clubs at his home, to share ideas on how we can approach meeting the million members goal.

On July 17, the Berkeley City Club will not be available for our usual meeting. Brennan’s and Tilden Park were suggested. [Editor suggests Pyramid Brewery] Let your Board know your thoughts. We will decide next board meeting.

Frank gave an interesting talk about just why BCC won’t be available. It seems there will be work on the old, imbedded in concrete, and corroding water pipes. So, no water for the kitchen or bathrooms. It will be an amazing high-tech process. All water will be drained from the pipes, air blown through to dry them, followed by a sandblasting technique to

remove the corrosion, debris removed, then the pipes will be coated with an epoxy-type compound to prevent future corrosion. This talk could have been the program itself! In fact our speaker was fascinated and wanted to hear more. I was intrigued, too.

Thursday, June 14 there will be a DCM at Art & Tammy Paridis’ workplace, Dynamic Graphics. 1015 Atlantic Ave., Alameda 94501 from 6 – 8PM.

$H, $S, etc.

Bill Fay -- 56th anniversary on the 16th

Duane – birthday

Linda – sorry she couldn’t be there, but a 3-grandchild party with trampolines and bouncy pavilion couldn’t be missed. She made a nice contribution instead.

Linda – happy about starting a quilting class for ladies at Madonna House—[an offshoot of St. Anthony’s Dinning Hall, it is housing for older women who had been homeless] There was a good turn out, and the expressed an interest in also helping with Pediatric Trauma Dolls, or gift quilts that might be given with the dolls.

Phuoc – for the great concert, though he liked the second half best. And happy to be newly Uncle Phuoc.

Jane – Sad that she won’t be at the next few meetings, but Happy to be going to Massachusetts for her sisters (twins) 55th birthday.

Ed – Happy for the great concert, but sad that his back prevented him from helping with the sales.

Bob – Happy, also, for the concert, and also for Ed’s generous gift to the Orchestra.

Our Speaker was artist / sculptor Ken Kalman. He had brought a DVD “slide” show of his work, but we were bedeviled by equipment failure or incompatibility. Despite the best efforts of our club members, and BCC’s staff, and a new player, we couldn’t get a picture. But, hardly showing a ruffled feather, he went on to tell us about some of the projects he has done, and the processes he uses. I’m sure you have seen some of his work. He is the

artist who created the tableau Oceana on the façade of the UC Storage building.(on Shattuck and Ward, where Adeline St. meets Shattuck). He is also the creator of the Salamander that graces the façade of the Artech building near downtown (on Addison & Milvia, if I recall the streets correctly).

He does the work himself, fashioning creatures from sheet metal and rivets. And engineers help assure that the installations meet safety requirements. But it all starts with drawing. He also produces free-standing works. Other favorite projects involve old maps bonded to metal used to create smaller sculptures. Well, there was much more, but writing fatigue has afflicted your scribe.

I urge you to check out his web page to see some of his work that we couldn’t see on Tuesday. kenkalman.com

P.S.Oh! About the Kiwanis Carpet: It was being transported from Emerson School to be cleaned before being returned to the school at the end of summer.
