KIWANIS CLUB u THE CLUB ON THE MOVE!!u BERKELEY, CA

Another beautiful SUMMER day in the company of great friends (Fitch, Fay, Coe, Carpenters, Skrak, Rice, Goodman, Barnwell, Wong, Piercy, Egeberg, Haughin, T. Paradis, Leonard, Maxe, Hearn, Melandry, F. Bliss, Khong, L. Hannawalt, and “Busty”) at a meeting of:

THE ROWDIEST

BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

Early- and ready to take on a job- B.Skrak happily sat down at the ticket table. No complaints were heard, and the monies balanced in the end!! B. Rice and fiddler Bliss led us in song, and Rev. Fay blessed us and those who are protecting our shores, reminding us of our many freedoms. (This was followed by a chorus of “Amen” by T. Paradis and VC.) D. Wong carted around the retread fine box, with the first $$ being put in by L. Hannawalt who arrived late on the scene and had not shaken the hand of any Secret Greeter.

When Retread Pres. Egeberg asked for insurance to be purchased for failure to shake the hand of the SG, he was immediately questioned by F. Bliss as to whether or not he has a license to sell insurance. (Was there a Secret Greeter???)

The only guest was “Busty”, a headless mannequin carted in by F. Bliss. She entered the best dressed contest- but didn’t win!!!!! All she was wearing was a baseball hat. Bliss stated he was lonely, so TP and VC attempted to rectify that- to much laughter by all and then a quiet “I’m lonely, too” by none other than G. Maxe.

In spite of the fact that UCB is IN we had the company of Virginia and LTG Gail. Only thing this editor caught that is on the docket for them is a car wash fund raiser this Saturday in Pleasanton. PLEASE NOTE that the K Family dinner previously planned for this coming Friday, June 29th, at the Carpenter home has been cancelled due to lack of people around (or wanting to come..??). It’ll be planned for later in the summer. Toooo bad- you’re missing a wonderful BBQ and fruit salad affaire…

D. Melandry had documented proof that there ARE flying saucers in the air!! An untouched photo was passed around, indeed showing five (yes, 5!!) things floating in the beautiful summer air. An explanation appears later in this rag.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

1. Retread Pres. Egeberg gave $37 for 37 years of marriage, but he didn’t say if they were happy or sad; thus this info comes under notes of interest, not JL$$$. We did sing to him (well, VC sang to him- but she sang HB, not HA).

2. Three jars of homemade jam (raspberry, strawberry and pineapple) were sold as fundraisers for the club… Thanks to Haughin, Paradis and Hannawalt for their donations of $10 each.

JJJJLLLL$$: J. Piercy delighted that the person he has been replacing the last two weeks will be back tomorrow. B. Carpenter a L$ that his

grandson would not get on the Tilden Park carousel- but he did enjoy the Little Farm. (The Kiwanis sign is still there!!) L. Hannawalt many J$s for an upcoming visit with son and family while they are in the states- and L$ that her grandchildren beat her at bowling and that her purse was stolen (She is, for a bit, a “cash carrying only” person). Rev. Fay a very, very, very J$ that young D. Wong joined the old man’s table- thus adding beauty to the front of the room. B. Barnwell J$ that he met friends like the mannaquin at a garage sale. B. Rice was quite J for Frank the fiddler.

Our speakers today were many. Actually our scheduled speaker missed a flight for (?) and didn’t make it.

We had a board meeting report from acting Sec. J. Piercy. We made a $100 donation to Bonita House, YPSO donations will be close to the $2000 mark- (you may still turn in money to the Foundation for this!!), a RIF distribution is due in July, P. Khong and D. Wong are hard a work on a website (and you did see D. roaming around the room with her laptop in hand looking for a connection somewhere!!), and we will have an interclub with San Leandro on July 17th when the BCC is closed down for repair work. So far 10 have signed up to go to that interclub.

Retread Pres. Egeberg then asked our member G. Maxe to give us a report on what he does! First words out of his mouth were “play golf”. In the real world, George is a management consultant, and part of his “job” is finding business for himself. He works with small businesses, assisting with strategies and operations- and “people stuff”. His next job will be with Triple A- (more than a small business!)- it is moving the main office in SF to the East Bay- and he anticipates many people problems to deal with. He does love playing golf- and gets a lot of business from that. He enjoys the Tilden golf course more than belonging to a “club”, and states that during the summer there are many children on that course.

As stated further up in this rag, D. Melandry had that picture of UFO’s… They were actually kitchen lights that reflected into the sky when he was taking the picture… really was authentic looking! We thought he should have inserted D. Wong and her laptop into the picture.

The barrister D. Leonard then gave us a chance to ask questions about the upcoming new event that will be replacing Classic Taste: It will be an Octoberfest- to be held at the same venue (St. Mary Magdalen Church) with the assistance of the members of the church. Duane states that this will be a social event, but one that will raise funds for community service (ie- a donation to the church??). Raffles will be of the German variety and small and fun in size, the bar will serve German beers and wine and other stuff!!, there will be an “um pa pa” band, attendance will be bolstered by church members, and discussion is underway about inviting other clubs and community persons. This event will be held in October- and it is wonderful to see the planning stages already started!! Great job.

Unable to come up with another name, Retread Pres Egeberg led us in the Pledge of Allegiance- which is always done at the END of each meeting of the

Rowdiest Club On The Move

A Most Outstanding Service Club

We were a small group, but that didn’t mean we were a quiet docile group! JohnP dashed to the Head Table and announced he was The Acting Secretary and throughout the meeting he did act…as secretary. Evie was behind the Ticket Table, enlisting “volunteers” to help with the setup. I blinked and Sandy was behind the table collecting tickets. And then BobS took over as server, dishing out a spicy fish main course and piling on the vegetables. Meanwhile Don was distributing postcards advertising his One Man Show; where was the fine box for this blatant advertising? By the time Our Beloved Leader (aka ReTread, aka Jeff, aka Prez) called the meeting to order, the stragglers wandering in gave us a quorum (or at least the number needed to “break even”) and a loud sigh emanated from the Acting Secretary.

BobR “volunteered” to lead us in GBA; Allen asked for “manifold blessings” and “His support” for our endeavors in his invocation. Denise was designated The Fine Collector, quickly collecting a Tardy Fine from Our Own Lt Gov, Frank. VC asked for recognition and showed off her new snazzy summer slacks. Ed (naked, well his face was newly naked and handsome he looked) jumped up and joined in what quickly became a Who-is-the-Best-Dressed Contest.

Roberta, in a Chinese jacket (a hint of today’s program?) also threw her hat, or should I say jacket, in the ring for Best Dressed.

LtGovFrank was recognized and updated us on an outstanding DCM. Venue, of course, was key as they met at Tamara/Art’s office. And in case you didn’t know (some folks didn’t) DCM stands for

Division (we are #2) Council Meeting and it is held monthly, hosted by the sitting Lt Governor.

InterClubGuruBill announced two, yes two, interclubs last week. Alameda (June 13) was attended by VC, BC, Sandy, Art, and Tamara. DCM (June 14) had Frank, Roberta, BC, VC, Jeff, Phuoc, Ed and Art attending. Bill is also organizing a San Leandro interclub for July 17 (no Berkeley meeting that day). Sign up next week!

ActingSecJohnP announced the Board, corrected by acclaim to Bored Board, meeting for June 17 at Ed’s. He also reminded us to get our generous YPSO donations to him quickly.

PrezJeff auctioned off a magnet, not just any magnet, but an American Electrical Refrigerator Magnet. Bidding was hot and heavy and it went for $1 to VC AND Denise.

SAVE THE DATE: K-Family feast at Virginia/Bill’s abode on June 29. Details coming.

NOTE: No meeting July 17.

Nervous folks—Jane and Frank and Sandy and Evie—responded to ReTread’s offer of insurance. And Roberta could locate no one else who did not shake her hand. Before Jane could even accept accolades for her upcoming birthday, VC was leading? us in a terrible rendition of Happy Birthday.

And the Fine Box grew heavier as PrezJeff sent Denise (aka The Fine Collector) to check on badges and pins. Wallets opened on that one!

Were we Happy; Were we Sad??

--Prez Jeff was happy and sad (not sure which was which) that The Real Secretary was in Hawaii and we had an Acting Secretary.

--Evie happy that last Friday’s Chronicle noted the Albany High Key Club’s panhandle clean-up.

--Charlie is pleased his son is visiting from Texas. .

--BobR is proud to be an uncle.

--Phuoc had 5 happy dollars—for Jane’s birthday, for his father, for Michael John getting back to the US.

--Debra updated us on the “guy” she has been talking about. But it turns out he is into some “scary” game; I didn’t catch the name (yikes, I must be getting old).

--Tamara was proud that Krysta’s company made the cover of Popular Science, with a great article inside.

--Roberta was proud her son Ethan found a job so quickly—interview to hire in less than three days!

--Evie was pleased she is not needed at Superior Court.

--Don paid to advertise his show, Playful Art, at the Claremont, all July. Opening Reception on July 3, 6-7:30 (RSVP 510.549.8512).

--JohnP was truly sad that TrueSecretaryJack is in Hawaii.

--Borden noted Roberta’s colorful jacket.

Sandy introduced The Speaker, Our Own Roberta. Topic: The first part of her recent trip to China.

Some of the highlights of her talk:

--Air quality is poor.

--Beer is served at all meals, but breakfast.

--Bikes have their own separate road

--They are trying to clean up the very old areas, in time for the Olympics.

--The corner top of buildings often has figurines; the more figures, the more important the occupant.

--The Xi’an soldiers were fantastic. Each one has a different face, and the type of topknot designates rank.

--China is large, yet has one time zone.

--The craft demonstrations were fascinating.

--One city they drove though had 33 million people (that’s the total of people in all of Canada)!

--The newly built Three Gorges Dam will provide 10% of the electricity for China.

Her pictures were a delight—from children jumping rope to grandparents watching a grandchild to the

snow on the Great Wall to beautiful examples of jade. She hinted she has more; Roberta please show us the slides of the rest of your trip. You captured both the country of China and your enthusiasm for your adventure in an awesome slide-show.

We had the Best Dressed vote (VC was not available to plead her cause or should I say pants. Roberta won according to The Prez (but I thought it was too close to call). Her prize: she led us in The Pledge.

(Respectfully submitted: tjp)

On the move!, but we were a disorderly group today. Precipitated, in part, by the fact that the program chair had misplaced her sign-up sheet for meeting functions. [There is hope: it was found, later, under the Kiwanis Carpet in her car. But more about that later.] She had also left the bio information about the speaker at home. But, not to worry, we BK’ers rise to the occasion. Roberta took over at the ticket table without even being asked. (To realize the full nobility of the offer, note that she had also done it the week before. Thank you Roberta.) Bob Rice led us in song: Loud, but a bit off key at times. When asked if he would take responsibility for the quality of the singing, he could only say that “You can’t control that bunch.”

Since no one remembered who was supposed to give the invocation, Ed Levitch volunteered—and gave us one short and to the point. (Hoorah! for Ed.) Bettye thought she was the one who had signed up for the fine box, so she handled the re-tread box deftly.

We were honored with a visit from three Richmond Kiwanians ; and also three Circle K’ers. Joe wasn’t among them, being off somewhere on the east coast on vacation, but Gail came to the podium to remind us of the Great Car Wash on June 30th in the Pleasanton Wal-Mart parking lot. Also, they would appreciate donations to their Yard Sale to be held in September. Although their number was few this week, there may be more after the main summer session starts June 25. But she won’t be among them, because she is going to Chicago. She wants to know what she should see there. E-mail suggestions.

Our President, always on the look-out for the benefit of our members, gathered up some programs from the YPSO Pops concert on Sunday, and sold them at a discount to those who weren’t there. Only $5, while those who were there had paid the $15 admission. Actually, if you were not there, it was your loss. The kids sounded great! And two world premieres [Scribe was worried when she saw them in the program, as she finds most new music ghastly, but these were actually enjoyable.] and two chamber ensembles, including a soprano aria from Bach’s Cantata 180. Plus wonderful Ellington, Leroy Anderson, Mancini, and (of course) Sousa! Among the attendees: Bob Brown and family, Jennifer, and Leo Iodice (who manned the bake-sale table with Debra)

And speaking of Bake Sale… Debra, Denise, and Sandy baked, and Duane contributed, too. We had some left over home-made brownies, which were sold off (auctioned?) by Denise. Well, one good auction deserves another, and a freshly made jar of Virginia’s raspberry jam was offered. Bettye started things off, but it looked like she was going to lose out until our Prez gallantly stepped in, closed the auction and bought it for Bettye to take home.

Frank announced that on Saturday the 9th he had hosted a TAG (Together Achieving Growth) meeting for 5 clubs at his home, to share ideas on how we can approach meeting the million members goal.

On July 17, the Berkeley City Club will not be available for our usual meeting. Brennan’s and Tilden Park were suggested. [Editor suggests Pyramid Brewery] Let your Board know your thoughts. We will decide next board meeting.

Frank gave an interesting talk about just why BCC won’t be available. It seems there will be work on the old, imbedded in concrete, and corroding water pipes. So, no water for the kitchen or bathrooms. It will be an amazing high-tech process. All water will be drained from the pipes, air blown through to dry them, followed by a sandblasting technique to

remove the corrosion, debris removed, then the pipes will be coated with an epoxy-type compound to prevent future corrosion. This talk could have been the program itself! In fact our speaker was fascinated and wanted to hear more. I was intrigued, too.

Thursday, June 14 there will be a DCM at Art & Tammy Paridis’ workplace, Dynamic Graphics. 1015 Atlantic Ave., Alameda 94501 from 6 – 8PM.

$H, $S, etc.

Bill Fay -- 56th anniversary on the 16th

Duane – birthday

Linda – sorry she couldn’t be there, but a 3-grandchild party with trampolines and bouncy pavilion couldn’t be missed. She made a nice contribution instead.

Linda – happy about starting a quilting class for ladies at Madonna House—[an offshoot of St. Anthony’s Dinning Hall, it is housing for older women who had been homeless] There was a good turn out, and the expressed an interest in also helping with Pediatric Trauma Dolls, or gift quilts that might be given with the dolls.

Phuoc – for the great concert, though he liked the second half best. And happy to be newly Uncle Phuoc.

Jane – Sad that she won’t be at the next few meetings, but Happy to be going to Massachusetts for her sisters (twins) 55th birthday.

Ed – Happy for the great concert, but sad that his back prevented him from helping with the sales.

Bob – Happy, also, for the concert, and also for Ed’s generous gift to the Orchestra.

Our Speaker was artist / sculptor Ken Kalman. He had brought a DVD “slide” show of his work, but we were bedeviled by equipment failure or incompatibility. Despite the best efforts of our club members, and BCC’s staff, and a new player, we couldn’t get a picture. But, hardly showing a ruffled feather, he went on to tell us about some of the projects he has done, and the processes he uses. I’m sure you have seen some of his work. He is the

artist who created the tableau Oceana on the façade of the UC Storage building.(on Shattuck and Ward, where Adeline St. meets Shattuck). He is also the creator of the Salamander that graces the façade of the Artech building near downtown (on Addison & Milvia, if I recall the streets correctly).

He does the work himself, fashioning creatures from sheet metal and rivets. And engineers help assure that the installations meet safety requirements. But it all starts with drawing. He also produces free-standing works. Other favorite projects involve old maps bonded to metal used to create smaller sculptures. Well, there was much more, but writing fatigue has afflicted your scribe.

I urge you to check out his web page to see some of his work that we couldn’t see on Tuesday. kenkalman.com

P.S.Oh! About the Kiwanis Carpet: It was being transported from Emerson School to be cleaned before being returned to the school at the end of summer.

Kollegiate 06/05/2007

June 5, 2007

Another beautiful SPRING day in the company of great friends at a meeting of:

THAT BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

(that was called to order 5 minutes late!!)

We really don’t mind, as there is always plenty of chit chat going on. We are a friendly group.

Past LTG distinguished R. Bliss was collecting money for your lunch ticket. Our resident song leader, B. Rice, led us in song that wavered from excellent to off key to back again excellent for the ending!! E. Goodman gave a short invocation, and “Geo” (you guess!) picked up the tire box.

Guess J. P. must have visited the bank as he brought along as a guest the personnel manager from our local Bank of America, known to all as “Villar”. I think the gossip is that this branch of B of A will be around till the end of the year (but who knows??).

In spite of the fact that UCB is out we had the company of Joe, Virginia and Thuyet. They are planning a car wash in Pleasanton on June 30th. I know we all need our cars washed, so this is a good time !! They also hope to have a monthly K family dinner during the summer. More info to come on this.

Two awards given for perfect attendance; R. Bliss for 8 years and E. Goodman for 6 years. Birthday wishes (belated) went out to T. Paradis (June 1st), B. Skrak (June 3rd), and D. Melandry (June 6th). The HB song was sung- three times- and then a fourth… No further comments needed. You had to be there!

Sunshine was shining for C. Fitch. He only spent two days in the hospital- and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He looked great today!!

NOTES OF INTEREST:

1. A card from Austria, written by S. Hearn, arrived- and Sandy. was in the audience today. Yes, the stamp was Austrian. S. arrived home late Sunday.

2. A notice from Camp Cazadero noting that this summer (all summer long) they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary.

3. D. Haughin was smiling today in spite of significant dental work this AM.

4. THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 10th,

YPSO CONCERT

JJJJLLLL were fairly numerous, beginning with C. Fitch who was J to be back after his hospital visit. B. Rice put in $5- that must have been happy but this editor did not hear the comment. P. Khong was J due to being named “Godfather” to his “Godnephew” (you had to be here). D. Wong L that she hasn’t found any sour cherries and J that she’ll head to LA to meet up with the previously mentioned “cute guy”. (Be safe, Debra.) J. Rosano very J for D’s beautiful smile, and very L due to no seats for CAL at the Big Game this year. D. Leonard a $ for a barrister’s technical term for P. Khong’s “Godfather” comments. (Once again this editor did not hear…) J. Piercy put money into the koffers cause the Retread Pres. is behind in fines. E. Levitch put in $20- but this editor didn’t hear…

Our speakers today were introduced by S. Hearn, and were from YPSO; David Ramadanoff, (the Music Dirctor and Conductor), Wendy Howe, (the Executive Director who has been on the job just one season now and is doing a restructuring of the fund raising programs and needs), and Ronald Fujie, (financial secretary- who manned the video of the China trip)

YPSO’s main home is in Berkeley. The orchestra is 70 years old, and Berkeley Kiwanis has been involved with it all of those years. Normally the age level is 13-21. However, this year there is a 10 year old who plays percussion and a 22 year old alumnus who has returned to play again! The total of 93 young adults “play and sound like a professional orchestra” according to David. This year the orchestra is involved in two world premiers, both of which will be played on Sunday at the Pops Concert.

(Stars and Stripes will also be performed.)

Last year’s biggest event was a tour to China- the orchestra’s first international tour. They performed in three cities- Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai- not only by themselves as an orchestra but with youth orchestras from China. We enjoyed many scenes of this trip during the video presentation.

David’s main “goal” for the orchestra is to bring music alive. The atmosphere (after the very competitive auditions to become a member) is one of cooperation, friendship, discipline and taking initiative.

Wendy shared with us that the orchestra will travel to Australia and New Zealand next summer. While there the members will “homestay” with local families, thereby adding the dimension of cultural exchange to the mix. 10% of the members of YPSO are under the poverty level, and 30% are on scholarship. OUR $$ are very “valuable” to the YPSO, as well as our personal support of attendance at their many concerts throughout the year!

As noted early in this Kollegiate edition, the YPSO Pops Concert will be this coming Sunday, June 10th …. YOUR support and your presence are requested… and you WILL enjoy the afternoon- + help our club to raise

the funds for our yearly donation to YPSO… So.. come on out

Circle Ker Virginia led us in the Pledge of Allegiance- which is always done at the END of each meeting of the

Club On The Move
