KIWANIS CLUB u Celebratin’ Service u BERKELEY, CA

A young mystery Cal student, who claimed to be our fearless president Phuoc K, dressed in flip flops and backwards baseball cap called the meeting into order today. A room full of ghouls and goblins greet him back.

We have Devilish Denise H. on ticket sales, Bob Rice leads God bless America with some help from American Idol, Borden P. Bill F gave our thanks in the invocation, and hardly recognizable hairy version of Bob S is on the fine box, from here on in called the box of Ultimate Doom.

We have six in costume today, Sandy in German gear, President Khong a cal-student, Denise H a devil, Bill C as his alter ego: the big bad wolf, Bob as… Bob S with hair. George M tried to pass as a golfer and Roberta B as a Korean tourist but I think that was not quite far enough of a stretch. For each legitimately costumed kiwanian, President Khong put in 1 scary dollar into the box of Ultimate Doom.

Our favorite sponsored youth club came in with a not seven donuts but seven boxes of donuts. Joe L tells about Key to College, where the college students hold a panel to introduce high school students to college. They had an Eat for Service event on Saturday. Then they also worked at a Pirates of Emerson as a fundraiser. FTC is this weekend and we have several Kiwanians joining them. Our sugar-loving members were then supplied with delicious holey baked goods. I guess they just wouldn’t wait till the candy was cheap after Halloween for their sugar rush.

Jeff reminds us that we no longer have parking rights! We only have two slots, one for el presidente and one for our guest speaker.

$$$$ Jeff also reminds us Dues are due. $$$$

Scholarship chair Tammy P. announces that work has began in the scholarship program. Interest is accruing! Great! Lots of monies to give out! Scholarship committee has been talking about goods and bads of previous years. There are many new ideas. Duane is going to start talking to High school counselors to find out when to put out the application and when is the best day to have scholarship lunch. Discussion has began on perhaps helping out students who are going to a trade school? Also, we are looking to put together a new process for Cazadero scholars to get our monies. A new idea is giving money early (in 8th grade), which earns interests through hs, encouraging those students to do well in high school to use that money! Also remember, you can donate too! Tax deductible. John P. mentions, increasing the dollar amount with inflation, then trick or treats for the foundation.

Announcement: President Cal Fan is happy to tell us that Berkeleykiwanis.org is up and running! Thanks to Debra and George.

Committee reports:

Fundraising: Werewolf Bill announce 50-50 tickets are for sale for our holiday auction. Tickets are only 10 dollars a piece. Also you can buy a table at the holiday auction. At this point, President Cal Fan’s phone goes off, did he put a dollar in the box of Ultimate Doom for that?

Holiday Auction Planning meeting: Every week there is going to be a meeting at 11:30am fundraising planning for holiday auction. Come help out!

Interclub: Werewolf Bill tells about the wonderful interclub with Debra Phuoc, Bill and Virginia represented at the spaghetti feed for Hayward/Castro Valley’s first on 10/25/07. We’re looking to have an interclub at Richmond tomorrow 12 at Gonzalez restaurant. We need a forth! Who wants to go?

Shelves for Emerson: Sandy, Denise and Jack worked on making shelves last week. Let’s get Oakland Tech to join in helping install these shelves.

President Cal Fan also reports that fire relief, project is coming along. We might have a free van from enterprise, and lots of people who are wanting to help… More to come on this.

Membership chair Debra W says committee meeting has been postponed due to scheduling conflict to next Tuesday at 8pm at Brennan’s. Join in help plan the function of the meeting, talk about possible projects for active members and have some dinner and drinks!

Birthday!!! Roberta! A little late due to surprise party this weekend. It is the 60th year! Let’s sing!

Hey Jane A! We have a lovely perfect attendance pin to give to you. When are you going to start showing up again?

Happys and Sads for our box of Ultimate Doom

  • A happy 5 from Evie who has been gone, lots of happy times with sister. Sounds like a busy weekend celebrating reunions and Roberta’s bday
  • President Cal Fan gives a happy dollar for carving pumpkins, he went simple and so his face didn’t fall over.
  • Leo is happy to make his annual trip to Kiwanis meetings. (great to see you!)
  • Bill faye is happy for Betty, who was gone.
  • Jeff announces happiness for Bob growing hair over night
  • John P says, “Here’s a dollar, I’m happy”
  • Bob R adds more money for the Bob S. hair cut fund.
  • Borden P is also happy.

George introduces our guest speakers, Dan Sawislak, president who is speaking on oxford project and Brower Center. Chris Hess talks about social services available. RCD is a nonproject committee development. Create housing and managed for those who were homeless or need help, also social services since 1984. The site is just eight blocks away, there is a large construction project, a hole in the ground. Half of these apartments are 2-3 bedroom family. There will be amenities: computers lab for training for youth and adults, outdoor spaces, parking, Brower center also will be adding 800 sq feet of retail space, restaurant, 100 spot underground parking lot. Housing with services is a key element to creating opportunities in people’s lives. This can help people deal with transportation, saving for education, housing etc.

They welcome support by being a community builder, or going to annual event at the Berkeley rep through advertisements or itesmf or auction in June or come in to connect and help out directly with their residents.

KIWANIS CLUB Celebratin' Service BERKELEY, CA

Next meeting (close to Halloween) the Pres. will pay $1 for each person who wears a costume.

With a loud WAHOO Pres. Khing Khong welcomed all to the fourth meeting of his term. It was a beautiful summer (???) day, but isn't this October? We were graciously greeted at the front table by S. Hearn, who took our money and handed out lunch tickets like a pro. B. Rice led us in song and J. Piercy gave a heartfelt invocation. Your "fine" money is safe on the poker table when it is in the hands of D. Wong.

Two guests joined us. Suzanne Mondel from the Salvation Army on Garden Street in Oakland is looking for a Kiwanis Club. She was a former Circle Ker, and we would love to see her join our group. Erik Hansen is the pastor to youth at First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley; he was the guest of G. Maxe. Also in our midst were three Circle Kers from the great UCB. Joe, Virginia and Hedwig all put in appearances and had something to say.

Circle K is BUSY as usual. Last Friday we enjoyed a pizza K family gathering at Bobby G's on University Avenue. This coming Saturday they host their annual Halloween Children's Festival at the Lincoln Center in Oakland. If you feel like showing up to help decorate the haunted house, they'll be busy at that from 7pm to midnight both Thursday and Friday. The Festival is 8-4 the 27th. Too tired to cook after the Festival?? Then head off to Pasta Pomodoro in El Cerrito to have dinner. 20% of the monies from what you purchase will come back to Circle K (it's a fundraiser!!). Sunday is the Key to College Program to be held on the Cal Campus from 8-3. They expect students from 13-16 high schools to attend. Another fundraiser is selling Krispy Kreme

donuts. For a fee donuts will be delivered to Kiwanis next Tuesday. The first weekend of November is FTC (Fall Training Conference). It's a great experience… and lots of fun to attend as a Kiwanian. The Circle Kers love our company!!!

Pres. Khing Khong announced that the Key Clubbers had their Fall Rally this past Saturday. It was very well attended, and over $13,000 was raised for PTP. This is a huge increase over previous years. All who went had a great time.

Interclub chair B. Carpenter announced two interclubs this past week; The K family dinner and the Oakland Club. Oakland's Holiday Auction will be held on December 3rd.

PLEASE pick up your phone and dial Charlie Fitch. He has had another fall, was in the hospital for a bit, and now is home. Let's all keep in touch!!!

S. Hearn announced that anyone interested in helping to varnish boards for the Emerson School shelves should show up at her house THIS Friday morning about 10ish. It'll be a couple of hours of service for the school, and you'll feel great for the experience and comraderie. Give her a call!!

RIF is tomorrow and Thursday. WOW.. finally!!

Both days should be finished no later than noon.

8:30am Wed. we begin at the 10th Street site. 9:00am on Thurs. we begin at the Emery Marina site. Thanks to all who signed up to help. Want or need a smile… come on out for this service event.

Call VC if you're interested.

:) :) :) :) :) :) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

They were numerous and some were large!! B. Fay very, very, very sad about the Bears. D. Leonard made it J by saying they'll win Saturday. F. Bliss sporting a new suit, shirt and tie purchased in Korea. He also got 2 other suits, a total of six shirts and six ties AND a leather jacket. WE need to see that leather jacket!! S. Hearn very, very happy she made it around the track 2 times. B. Lowman sad that she cannot make RIF as she has to work (and we thought she was retired!!). J. Rosano asking for prayers for the firefighters and the residents in Southern California at this time. Pres KK is going to look into a possible project of collecting blankets and household goods to send down. Great idea.

G. Maxe introduced our speaker, Tracy Hanna, head of the Teen program at the YMCA. PG&E has donated a building directly across the street from Berkeley High to the YMCA specifically for a teen center. It will take 2-3 years to get it up and running. The Teen Center is in the process of hiring 6 teens from across the city to help plan, design, and suggest programs for this center. These teens will be paid for their hours (approx. 10 hours per week) + will receive a stipend at the end of the 12-18 month period. Other segments of the present Team program are Y Scholars (helping and mentoring the first child in a family to be able to get to college), Outsiders (a work training program), and Youth and Government (includes some traveling to get to various "events"- thus they fundraise!!). We are looking for ways to be involved with the YMCA, both in the younger age levels (ie Head Start) and the teen level and all ages in between!!

By the way: Cazadero work day will be April 19th, Gualala the weekend after that.. SAVE the dates!

HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!

10/16/07

"King" (Prexy) Khong started the meeting with a clang of the bell within seconds of 12:30.  He must be trying to break with the tradition of "late".  It's a good thing since even with starting late, he ran into the speaker's time (but more later).

Awaiting us on our tables was the "annual" club survey.  King asked us to fill them out while we ate lunch.  I have trouble double tasking myself, but to take notes, eat lunch, and fill out a form is way beyond capacity.  Got it done, though.  Some had to stay after "class" to get it done!

Phuoc admitted that he hadn't appointed a Secret Greeter and thus couldn't sell insurance or collect fines.  VC volunteered that she would serve as the SG and asked that everyone be fined.  That wasn't done, and I didn't note that Fine Box Carrier "Fruit" Bob collected from her.  Just another missed opportunity.

The working crew, besides Bob, included George on the ticket desk (note the neat pile of money, Duane); Bob Rice on GBA (with one note accompaniment by Frank) and invocation by our Spiritual Engineer, Roberta.

Time to mention that the Blisses arrived back from Korea tomorrow and thus were not too current on sleep, but vowed to get back on "normal" schedule by tomorrow.

They had a great two weeks, including celebration of grandson's 1st BD.  (But I didn't note any H$ for that occasion!).  We will get the full report at a later meeting when they get their pix and sleep straightened out.

Ed L. introduced his new "girl Friday" (Boy, what a job she has), Jessica.  Please do not confuse her with Jenny – she's his "girl" every day.  Ed was also effusive with his pride in the pictures of Gualala that Elizabeth had taken and Jessica was able to retrieve from the innards of the computer.

Another guest (stranger) walked in with Ed and Jessica – the one and only Zalman.  He was not recorded as a guest, but seems to be in good health.  He did mention that he and Carina are no longer a couple, but did not give any details, and of course no one asked.

Al Coe was called upon to report his trip to Little Farm with daughter and grand daughter, and his pride at seeing the sign board that gave credit to this Club and the Berkeley High shop class for developing the start of the Little Farm 50 years ago.  Al suggests that if you haven't been up recently you ought to make a visit – particularly on a weekend when there are lots of kids.

Duane reported very briefly, but very positively on the Oktoberfest and VC noted that we should net "north of" $2000 when

the expenses are paid.  The date of 20 Sep has been chosen for next year (The UCB Bears have a "Bye") and the "band" (Edelweis) scheduled – they had a good time, too - so mark it on your calendar and DON'T allow anything to keep you away.

Alex subbed for Joe and filled us in on Circle K activities.  It is impossible to keep notes on his rapid fire speech but I have notes that say UCB had a first place team in the N. CA. "Competition"; they enjoyed helping at the Oktoberfest (their assistance was priceless); and they are working on a "Renovating Oakland" project.  Perhaps Tammy should get them to renovate her kitchen!??

King finally recognized our "sitting" LtGuv and IP LtGuv and then another past LtGuv, but not the 4th VIP.  Believe it or not, that was VC and there wasn't a peep (then) from her, either!

Secy Jack noted that "Dues are Due" and circulated a Roster that he's about to give to the "composing agent".  If you weren't there and have any changes you better phone them to him tomorrow!

RIF will be on Oct. 24 & 25, but VC left the sign-up sheets somewhere, so call her if you want the details and to sign up.  She will hopefully have the sheets with her next week, but that is just the day before.

The quiet half of the Carps reported on 2 interclubs this past week and is looking for help to make a visit to Richmond tomorrow, but this will probably get to you too late to help.  Come to lunch and you will be informed a bit more timely.

King noted that there are 3 anniversarys this  month, Steve and Doris Chun, Bob and Lois Brown, and Bob and Joyce Skrak.  Bob S was the only celebrant present, so we should all call Steve and Bob B.

Lots of H/S $.  Fay H to see Zalman and going to see UCLA vs UCB but S re. Oregon. Jeff S that Bill H did not dress Linda as well today as he did Saturday (you had to be at both to be in on this).  VC, Linda, Phuoc H for Oktoberfest.  Borden H that JP sang as loud as he did.  Linda H to attend a Quilt Festival and buy a long arm quilter.  (I didn't think she had such short arms!)

And, Sandy had a H that she is participating in Hopewalk to support children suffering (mentally or physically) from AIDS  She hopes to raise contributions thru

www.firstgiving.org/sandyhearn.   You can read the details at www.globalstrategies.org

Bill H introduced longtime friend and partner, Phil Hudner, who came over to talk to us about the Donner Party.  He is a direct descendent of a survivor.  Phil noted that most folks know of the Donner Party from the reports of cannibalism.  It's a long story, but the first problem was that the party did not travel "lite", but had way overloaded wagons (no room for anyone to ride), were always late (and getting later), and were given some terrible advice – take the short way over Donner Pass rather than the long way (but not so high!) to Oregon and then South.  Phil took a bus trip (not overloaded) that followed the Donner route and found lots of corroboration of information passed down thru his family.  Take what you read with a grain of salt seems to be his evalua-tion of most of the literature on the subject.

Next week, Tracy Hanna of the YMCA will talk about the YMCA Teen Program.  The following week we will hear about the Oxord Project which is slowly growing to new heights.

Gail led the Pledge and King Khong rang the gong so we could all go out into the rain.

October 2007: To Start With

At long last, there was an idyllic Club Installation event Saturday in the park (Live Oak, that is), and President Elect Phuoc is finally Prez PK. Former Prez Retread is finally a Past President (again), and boy, is he happy! The incoming Prez treated everyone to gourmet catered BBQ and made his remarks short and sweet but nevertheless indicated some lofty and worthwhile goals for new ideas this coming year.

Meanwhile, the outgoing retread congratulated all for some great successes AFTERALL this last year:

    • the "best-ever" Holiday Auction (V. Carpenter & L. Hannawalt presiding),
    • the "best-ever" Camp Gualala outing (J. Rosano presiding, and thanks to, or in spite of, the efforts of team leaders such as G. Maxe, E. Levitch, J. Piercy, S. Hearn),
    • the biggest (for a long time) & best Scholarship Award Program, which

(spearheaded by the always invigorating T. Paradis and a cast of thousands),

    • the emergence of a greatly strengthened K Family through the leadership and effort of several, starting with G. Maxe, D. Wong, P. Khong, D. Haughin, and last but not least

      L. Hannawalt for bringing us a new youth program (The Key Club from Oakland Tech), among other good things.

    • The last great event is our next fund-raising/social event of the year, the 1st ever Berkeley Kiwanis Oktoberfest, coming right up this Saturday, October 13.

As a fitting expression of gratitude, the ex-prez presented each of these leaders with their very own personalized German beer steins to be put to good use at this gala event.

For the non-beer-drinkers and tie-shunners, he presented G. Maxe, P. Khong, E. Levitch with an eclectic collection of license plate frames and strange neckties.

And Now for a Clean Start

Anyway, getting on (finally!) to today's meeting at the historic City Club (with new parking rules in place), Mr. Khong, at his very 1st meeting as the installed president of the Berkeley Kiwanis Club, walked in with the very same Kiwanis "children-of-the-world" tie on that he recently acquired. (Rumor was, however, he had to go out and buy a new shirt to wear a tie with).

Wow, did we have guests today? To start with, it seems like we always have the sitting Lt Governor with us, and this time it's none other than our very own E. Levitch. While he had the spotlight, he introduced his very own guest, known to some as the young Ms. Levitch, Susie,

wife of son Jeff. Since he still had the spotlight, he then announced the 1st DCM of the year this Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the office of Levitch Associates. A fantastic dinner is evidently included, and it wasn't clear whether donations are appreciated (but they probably are).

After all those intros, once again D. Wong quietly introduced her usual guest, Evan. Nice to see him again (hmmm…)

Marching On

There was no Secret Greeter today, and this may be a sign of the times. The rumors were something about a conflict of interest in selling insurance (legal regulations and licensing provisions or something like that).

The obviously biggest announcement of the week by D. Leonard about how all is a very big GO for the much-anticipated 1st annual Oktoberfest – Lederhosen , Dirndl boobettes (needn't I remind you), Oom-Pah Bands, German raffles, and all. SEE YOU THERE!

Other exciting events this week are the regular meeting of the not-so-regular UC Circle K Tues night at 100 Wheeler,

AND a fantastic Interclub opportunity this Wed at the Alameda Club's Policeman of the Year ceremony.

Oh, and don't forget LtGovEd's DCM dinner Thur and you have an action-packed week!!

Lastly, next week there's another fantastic opportunity at the Spaghetti Feed at  Hayward-Castro Valley on Oct 25.

Then Circle K took over with their never-ending agenda including:

    • Cal Avenue  (10/13) on campus: fundraising, etc
    • K Family Dinner (10/19) – still looking for location
    • Rebuilding Oakland (10/20)
    • Childrens Festival (10/27)
    • Key to College (10/28) – looking for Kiwanis speakers on your college experience
    • Halloween event (10/30)

Late in the Game

There were so many Happy/Sad dollars that it's impossible to record them all. Especially with his large contribution for the rubber fine box last year, J. Egeberg tried, with some cockamamie logic to apply the proceeds to last year's books (his year), but it didn't work at all.

Overtime

Prez Phuoc warned us of changes this year, and we started off his 1st meeting with the program coming along BEFORE the meeting. What's that all about? Well, it turns out that our speaker had conflicting obligations, and it's unlikely we'll keep it up all year (so don't worry).

Then G. Maxe introduced a superb program for the day, Pamm Shaw of YMCA"s Head Start program, which has been rapidly growing, particularly in the Bay Area, and actually has more "Early Head Start" classes (age 3 years and younger). They are very appreciative of Kiwanis programs, such as coaching and mentoring by Circle K and our very popular RIF programs and are always interested in partnering with us. Her fundamental question for us is "If you have an hour… (especially if you have special skills such as music, computers)" She had a couple of anecdotes about

how they were referred to recently by medical authorities as to the only place they could find Spanish speaking baby delivery. And then she told the happy/sad success story about one of their "graduates" who got a $90,000 job offer but that cut her off from welfare because the federal low income level is $20,000 (for a family of four). In summary, just remember "If you have an hour…" – that's the way Pamm wants us to close. Thanks, Pamm!

REMEMBER THE OKTOBERFEST

Saturday Oktober 13.

6:30 is the start of the celebration (read Happy Hour), followed by the feast at 7:30, and music 'til 10:30.

WE ARE ORGANIZED!

There was a Pre-Luncheon-Meeting concerning the Oktoberfest activities.  Attending this planning session: Duane, George, Jack, Denise, Jeff, Linda, Virginia and Tamara.  Final logistics were discussed and settled.  Food will be scrumptious:  Bratwurst and Knackwurst and Frankfurters plus salads and yummy apple cake and lots of other feasty things.  Note the main time at this meeting was spent discussing…the libations. A plea to CircleK'ers—we need you (contact Duane for details).  And a plea to Kiwanians, we still need volunteers for a variety of things (contact Duane).

INSTALLATION/DEINSTALLATION CELEBRATION

This Saturday, October 6.

Live Oak Park (Berryman and Shattuck, at the Chimney) noon to 2.

Let's celebrate the New Regime and give our PastPrez a glorious send off.  (Contact Phuoc if you haven't signed up and want to come.)

THE MEETING COMMENCED

ExRetreadPrez stepped in as Prez 'cuz Phuoc has not been officially installed (or the Prez deposed, opps, I mean de-installed). So a Kiwanis New Year has begun!

BobR led us in GBA.  RevBill asked for His blessings on us and offered Him a thank you for Kiwanis and for the New Year and the old Prez, as well as blessings on our activities, focusing on one

child at a time to change our world. Duane was in charge of the Fine Stein.  Sandy greeted us with a smile and a ticket for a yummy meal.

We welcomed back Ed who looked very healthy and very debonair with his cane.  He was "happy to be here" and asked for our guidance, our support, our assistance in his new role as Lt Governor.

GUESTS

Ed introduced Jessica; Deborah introduced Harm; BobR introduced Esther.

BHS Key Club came to our meeting (yea! And thank you for coming). Arianna Delsman (President) and Monika Haoui (in her words, a "devoted member") updated us on their activities.  They've participated in Shore Clean Up and Tibetan Aid.  Coming up are the Swim Mile and a bake sale a week from this coming Friday at BHS.

CircleK'ers Jennie, Gail, Kim were in attendance

ANNOUCEMENTS AND INFO

Duane needs volunteers to sell Oktoberfest tickets in front of Saint Mary Magdalen's after each Mass, this Sunday.  Contact Duane to volunteer.

Parking at the City Club is getting more and more complicated.  The City Club will only allow Kiwanis two spaces for our Tuesday meeting—one for the President (lucky Phuoc) and one for the Speaker (ExPrezJeff immediately volunteered to speak at each meeting this coming year…).  Parking is available at the Parking Structure a block and a half up towards Telegraph; 50% off parking fee tickets are available at the check-in table (aka where you buy your food ticket table).

Jack also reminded outgoing and incoming folks to bring your pins to the Installation/Deinstallation.

George, October chair, announced next Tuesday's speaker: a YMCA spokesperson on the Headstart program.  She will speak at 12:30.

WE NEED MEMBERS

We've lost 5 members last year, leaving us with only 40, and 6 of those have Senior Member status.  Scribe comment:  think of this meeting, what we are accomplishing, the pride we have in our sponsored youth, the fun we have.  Now carry that enthusiasm to your friends and acquaintances and invite them to a lunch to share in our joy, our pride, our fun!

WE SHARE

Alan recently accompanied his daughter to the Little Farm, a Kiwanis project in the past.  He wanted to remind us that Little Farm is a service activity we should continue to be proud of.  We should be taking "our children and grandchildren"!

We celebrated the California Bears #3 placement in the National Rankings!

--Evie was happy.  She told us that the Little Farm folks often call her, when little kids are coming, to be the Milkmaid.  So often these kids have never seen a cow being milked!  She also reminded us that the Blisses are on their way to Korea, but left treasures for the Oktoberfest.

--Phuoc was happy.  The Bears are #3; VC helped at the RTC; and his Installation is coming.

--Linda was happy. She had lots to share and ended with a comment that made us smile:  She and Bill together…have one brain, one bladder, and one memory.

--SecJack was happy.  He enjoyed the CAL game with friends and had a "Good Luck" for Phuoc.

--Denise was happy for the Keyclub and circleK and had a Good Luck also for Phuoc.

--Bill C was sad.  He can't make the installation, the first he has missed in years and years.

--Sandy was sad for her fender bender.  But she was also happy that no one was hurt and State Farm was great.

--Deborah was sorry to be missing the installation and good food.

--NewBob was happy to be working for the Family Fest in San Francisco.

--Bettye was sad; her car is in the shop.

--Jessica wan happy to be here; Jessica was sad because the Lt Gov basket landed on her desk.  Hmmm wonder what that could portend?.

--Ed was happy that this was finally the last meeting of ReTread Jeff.

THE PROGRAM

George as Program Chair introduced Virginia and Bill, who brought music and humor and energy to our meeting.  We were going to learn the Polka!

VC first met Bill at a square dance class and they have danced ever since.

VC provided hints to insure a Perfect Polka:

--The pattern is forward, close, forward;  forward, close, forward.

--Shorter steps are important.

--Don't stand directly in front of each other (this developed into a discussion, but this Scribe is too sensitive to write what was discussed…).

--The man leads.

--This lead means if there is a mistake, it is his mistake!

--Ladies keep your head to the left; this helps with turns.

--Don't look at your feet!

While watching the practice session, the Scribe could not help but think-- those simple instructions from BC and VC were beyond most….

A fun, an enjoyable dance session and meeting and lunch.

See you at the Installation/De-installation.

                              (scribe:tjp)

REMEMBER THE OKTOBERFEST

09-25-07

The last meeting of the Oct. 1, 2006- Sept. 31, 2007

term was led by incoming Pres. Khing Khong, (which means that he will have 53 weeks in his term, while Pres. Retread Egeberg only had 51 weeks!)  PKK is getting smoother by the week… and we are in for a great new year.

George M. was once again collecting your money at the ticket table.  He was taking notes… when asked what they were he replied "my golf scores".     Bob R. had assistance from Frank B on the piano (well, not on it but playing it) and led us in a wonderful   rendition of GBA.  Evie G. asked for blessings on our Kiwanis work.   When acting PKK called on the fine collector, Denise H.,  he was interrupted by his boss, Frank B Frank, with the able assistance of his better half, Roberta, presented PKK with his new fine box- a great display of Khing Khong's loves of CAL and Poker.  It's a poker table shaped box, with sides made of top notch poker hands (representing the best helpers in Kiwanis!!!) and the CAL logo on the backs of cards in the box.  UNIQUE!!- and PKK was impressed!!

Ed L. brought along his grandson Brian, and Linda

H. brought her friend Pat Sparks to join in the commraderie of a BK lunch.  Circle K was represented by Joe, Gail, Virginia and Ashley (who led us in the pledge at the end of the meeting, but she thought it was to be the Circle K pledge)!!  We love you, Ashley!!!!!

Circle K was busy this past weekend with an indoor carnival, Marine Headlands, and other stuff.  Their meeting tonight will draw hopefully about 200!!  Their K family dinner at House of Curry was fun, and the next K family dinner is already scheduled for October 19th.  SO- this is early notice… get the date on your calendar so more Kiwanians can attend!!

FTC (Fall Training Conference) is the 1st weekend of November in Sonora area- TONS of fun-

PKK announced this coming weekend's Key Club RTC which will be attended by 8 Oakland Tech Key Clubbers with PKK and VC + one parent.

Three interclubs since the last time Interclub Chair Bill C. reported:   Four attended Moraga Valley, five at the Albany El Cerrito installation and five at Albany El Cerrito breakfast this am.  ANYONE going to visit clubs in the next two weeks should take Oktoberfest tickets to sell.  Call VC.

BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS RAG….

A work opportunity at Emerson school shelving 4000 books will have been accomplished by whoever shows up.  This was last minute notice… but there will be some of us there!!  10-12am…  Should be fun!!

RIF will be!!   Two events in October.  2nd week on Wednesday (Head Start partner sites) and 4th week (ALL sites- about 650 kids)…  Sign ups next week.

JJJJLLLL$$:  Almost all were JJJ!!!

Many J$$$ to see Ed L. walking around with his

cane.  He is healing nicely and feeling good, and is happy to still be walking.  We enjoy your great smile, Ed!!  Bob R. shared that his grandfather was in the 1st graduating class at CAL. Linda H. celebrated three years of wedded bliss with Bill- and is thrilled that two of her quilts are

being judged in a quilt contest.  Duane L, after three years of rowing on land, has branched out into the water.  Is is true he will be rowing around an estuary- somewhere in the area of San Quentin???  Sandy H. enjoyed a week of babysitting her grandkids.  Frank B. gave one of the few L$ that PKK forgot to call on a secret greeter and thus was not doing his job of selling insurance.  As well, Frank and Roberta will be in South Korea for two to three weeks visiting their son and family.  Bob B. put in the other L$ that he had to leave early due to a committee meeting.    Circle Ker Joe put in J$ for the use of the Carpenter van on so many of their projects.  Otherwise they would be walking!!  Jack R. $$$ for Ed and prayer $$ for CAL bears against Arizona State this coming weekend.  VC for Tahoe, cooking for her family, and JJJ$$ to boost up Pres. ReTread's koffers.  Bill C put in apology $$ for having to sit at the table with Linda & Virginia – or was that Virginia & Linda- and that he didn't trade badges with Bill H- but it wouldn't have mattered anyway.  WELL… with this one you HADTO BE THERE!!!

Another note of interest:  OKTOBERFEST!!

As per Duane L:

"The Berkeley Kiwanis Club and St. Mary Magdalen Parish will co-sponsor an Oktoberfest after the 5:30pm Mass on Sat, Oct. 13. SELL THOSE TICKETS.  MORE ARE AVAILABLE FROM VC.

Time for the speaker of the day.

Kinwood DeVore, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Fresh Start House,  a State of California licensed and certified 24-hour live-in, faith-based substance abuse recovery facility for men.  Kinwood has been a minister for the past 35 years, 8 years in Alameda County as Chaplain at Santa Rita.  Through his years of experience in community challenges he has seen that people can change their way of thinking when they have positive role models.  He himself had the experience

of a father/husband in the home as he grew up,  and is of the persuasion that with man as a provider in the home we can deal with wounded hearts, minds and bodies.  Building relationships with positive role models is vitally important.  Kinwood is a DYNAMIC speaker… one hero of his is Winston Churchill who was able to stir the spirit of the people- bringing light through the darkness.  WE need to be able to do this within our families and our communities.  It is up to US to be involved in our communities.  The Metropolitan Fresh Start House now has a place in Oakland, thanks to the assistance of Bill & Linda H.  To learn more about this program check out www.metropolitanfreshstart.org

If you missed today, you missed a WONDERFUL SPEAKER.  Thank you, Kinwood.

And so another 90 minutes has passed.  Hope to see some of you at Emerson School tomorrow… and…

OCTOBER 6th…  12 to 3…. Installation of our outgoing ReTread and incoming Khing Khong.  $20 per…  BBQ with fabulous food…  This is an event NOT TO MISS!!

SPEAKERS for next week- Get a head start on dancing at Oktoberfest.  Bill and Virginia C will be teaching you the POLKA….  COME ON OUT!!!

ALL THE NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT

A Special Kiwanis Day:  Lunch at Tilden Park!

The gather-of-the-notes for the absent scribe, RevRoberta, sat in the sun (the shade being tooooo cold, as usual).  SecJack, Duane and PrezJeff were at the grill. Twelve additional Kiwanians and Circle K Joe and Thuyet were gathered around the grill awaiting culinary delights (and for a bit of warmth too.)

Circle K report included:
--The Interclub bears were at Joe's house, refusing to come to the meeting; they were too afraid of the bees
--Their first general meeting was last Tuesday with
250-300 folks attending
--September 21, Kiwanis Family Dinner at House of Curry.

Our song was cancelled; something about scaring all the folks around us so much they would flee in terror.

Nor was there a Secret  Greeter (no explanation given).  RevRoberta, though, made sure there was an invocation by giving it herself.

Evie provided the anti-bee cream (which was much appreciated).

SecJack's Announcements:
--Board Meeting September 18.
--ElCerrito Installation October 6 at Hotel Mac
--Ed still in hospital and sends his love (after 12 hours of surgery!).

Phuoc announced his Installation.  Chimney Picnic area of Live Oak Park, noon to 4. Scribe is unsure of date.  Deinstallation is at that time too, as PrezJeff exclaimed.

Duane reminded us that the Ocktober Fest is October 13-German songs, German band, German food, German treasures for auction, etc, etc, etc.  And don't forget dancing and a lively treasure-filled auction.    Check your mailbox for The Envelope containing all the details.  This Fest will be incredible-invite your friends, invite your family, invite your neighbors, invite your in-laws, invite your work mates.

LtGovFrank was awarded a life membership in the District for his service as LTG.  Congratulations Frank for all you have accomplished; we are all proud of you

Evie collected $15.00.  Scribe has no idea for what.

Phuoc gave a happy dollar for….drum roll please….the #6 IN THE NATION California Bears.

Finally the steaks came off the grill, the bean pot was hot, the salads cold.  And best of all, there were real knives, unlike previous years when one would go through at least 6 plastic knives while eating the scrumptious steaks (no, this is not a reflection on the steaks but on those weak plastic knives).

A special day, a special group

(scribe:  tjp)

09-11-07

It was Patriot's Day as we gathered.  George Maxe was at the ticket table.  Phuoc was practicing being

President, standing in for our Retread.  When the gong was sounded, Borden stepped forward and urged us to sing so well and so loud that a certain man hiding in the hills of Afghanistan or Pakistan might hear it.  And so we gave a full-bodied rendition of GBA.

Roberta gave an invocation, to bless the food to our bodies so that we could work, and work, and work, and work for the children of the world.

We had guests from the Oakland Club, Pres. Joe Debro and Ken Hansen.

Insurance was offered, none taken, and the Secret Greeter was asked to stand.  Confusion followed as two folks stood up.  Bettye and Ron Abbott (from Stockton).  It seems that both the program chair and the acting Pres. had appointed one.  Acting Pres. declared his to be the official one so Bettye gave her report.  We were a friendly club, with one HIGHLY UNUSUAL exception.  So Evie coughed up a fine.

Joe Lee, K family chair came to the podium to announce the first Circle K meeting of the year, tonight (Tue.) at Barrows Hall.  And I think we rounded up an interclub to attend and support our fantastically wonderful sponsored youth.

(Speaking of interclubs, we had a super one at Ed Levitch's installation as Lt. Gov./birthday party.)

Back to Circle K:  Joe announced :

  • 6, count 'em, service projects going on this week-end
  • K Family Dinner at House of Curries  on Durant near Bowditch.  Friday 9/14, 6 to 8.
  • Their "garage" (parking lot?) sale raised about $1,200.—[didn't catch the exact amt.]

About this time Deborah came in late.  She was charged with a fine, but pleaded amnesty.  As long as she is on her current work assignment, she will not be able to get to meetings quite on time.  Wouldn't it be better for her to be here rather than skip and do a make-up or just skip?   His royalty, the Khing, showed mercy and agreed to grant a dispensation.

Announcements:

  • Meeting next week is in Tilden Park for a great steak feed.  Same place as the last two years—Indian Camp picnic area. (if you know where that is).  Our Secretary said go in the Spruce St gate, turn left on Central Park Drive.  It is north of the pony ride stables. You should be able to see it from the road.
  • Phuoc's installation barbeque will now be October 6, 12 to 4 in Live Oak Park, near "the chimney", Shattuck near Berryman.
  • We got a banner patch for Toys for Troops donation we gave last year.  We hope to be more involved this year.
  • RIF (Reading is FUNdamental) distribution is coming up next week, but still don't have definite date(s).  We might be able to do it in one day.  Virginia will keep us posted.
  • We sold about 48 Entertainment Books at the Solano Stroll, thanks to the generosity of Frank Bliss, who gave up his business' spot so Kiwanis could have a booth.  Jack told us how many, but I couldn't hear.  One thing is certain, though, we need to sell a lot more.  We've got to sell at least 160 of them this year.  So tell your friends and family what a good deal they are.

    Happy$$ / Sad$$

L$  Bill Carpenter reported that after 112 years, Berkeley Ace Hardware suffered an Armed Robbery.  Fortunately, the employees were not seriously injured and the thieves were unable to break into the safe.  Instead they took the change fund and some kitchen accessories.  A good description by employee(s) and led to the quick arrest of the perpetrators, caught while still counting the cash.  [Thank you, Berkeley's Finest]

J$  Deborah was glad to be here

L$  Phuoc's Aunt passed away unexpectedly.  All thought she was getting better.

L$  Frank was sorry that he will be away and unable to attend Phuoc's installation.

K$  A hopeful and concerned $.  Ed Levitch will have back surgery tomorrow.  We all hope it will offer relief of pain.  (A card to wish a speedy recovery was circulated for signature.)

J$  John P will miss the next two meetings [L ] because he and Traudel will be in Europe.

J$  Jane is going off to New England for a family wedding.

L$  Bob's gym bag fell off on the way back from the gym and the "F" line ran over his gym pants, ruining them.

J$  Bob was happy that the bike is OK and for the help of good SF citizens who helped him pick up and recover the rest of his gym clothes.

Our speaker was fellow Kiwanian Ron Abbott, from the Stockton Club.  His topic was Kiwanis Family House, located on the grounds of the UC Davis Medical Center.  Kiwanis House provides a place to stay, and support to families of patients of the Medical Center.  Unlike McDonald House, which limits stays to 30 days, family members can stay as long as needed.  This is particularly important to mothers of premature infants, who sometimes require months in Neonatal Intensive Care.  In addition to lodging, the House can provide clothing, (Some come to the Med Center by emergency helicopter flights in the middle of the night with no change of clothes, even in bathrobes.) canned goods, and, most importantly, the chance to talk to others in similar circumstances.  Residents of the House are referred there by the Medical Center.  Kiwanis House asks for $40 per night from the residents to offset the cost of staff and maintenance, but no one is turned away for lack of payment.

The "House" consists of a total of 32 units, grouped by eight, each eight-unit group has its own kitchen and laundry facilities.

There are many ways to support the Kiwanis Family House.  One thing our club could consider would be to become a sponsoring club.  This requires a minimum $500 initial contribution and an annual $100 per year thereafter.  Also, memorial bricks to pave the patio can be purchased for $100., or one can sponsor a family for a night by contributing $40.  Ron also mentioned scrip cards, but, unfortunately I didn't quite understand the process.  I've sent him an e-mail to find out more and will share what I find out at a later meeting.  Those of you with internet access can check out the House's web site at kiwanisfamilyhouse.org

The First Game is this Saturday: CAL vs. Tennessee and tickets are available!

Khing Khong, our soon to be president, presided.   He was "pumped up" after the Reno convention and looking forward to his reign. The "agenda" never made it to his hands, but we are flexible!   VC, assisted by Gail, led us in a spirited and animated GBA.  JohnP thanked Our Heavenly Father for our raucous group, our wonderful food, and our lovely weather. VC, always multitalented, also sold the lunch tickets.

Khing Khong offered insurance, begged us to buy insurance, pleaded with us to buy insurance.  We're friendly; no one bought insurance.  And a disappointed KK admitted there had been NO secret greeter (KK—we are too smart to be fooled; hmmm, is this a challenge?).  Rumor has it our beloved ReTread is not in Mexico as planned, but in Hawaii, all thanks to Dean.  .

Our Special Guest was Denise's Brother Brian.  Which prompted the question:  "Who's minding the shop?".

Gail and Jenny represented Circle K.   Jenny reminded us:

--The  annual garage sale September 8 and 9, 8AM to 4PM  at a certain Ace Hardware Parking lot.  All profits go to their Special Project, Pediatric Trauma.

--First Meeting September 11 at 155 Dwinelle.

And caught sneaking in a bit tardy were Joe, Virginia, Minerva.

SecJackR updated us on previous and future info.  Reno was "pretty darn good".  We won the Fizz Off; did you have a doubt?  The trophy is back home!   Although there are rumors that the contest was "shut down" early due to…..excessive noise.  The Interclub luncheon was eatable and the inspirational speaker was inspirational and, yes, we qualified for an interclub.  Eleven folks attended:  Ed, RevBill, Khing Khong, Jane, SecJack, LTGovFrank, Roberta, NewBob, Dense, Sandy, Duane.  Thank you all for representing us.

We have a vacancy on the Board for next term.  Debra was nominated and seconded.  Next week, anyone else interested should "throw their hat in the ring".

Some are Happy, Some are Sad.

Charlie:  Two Happy $$ for a visit from his Grandson and celebrating 36 years of retirement from the phone company on Sept 1.

NewBob:  Happy Sandy drove him to Reno and happy for the interclub lunch.

RevBill:  Happy dollar for Ed driving to Reno and  staying awake.

Debra:  Happy she has started her Masters program and sad her schedule will be crazy.

KK:  Happy for the Reno convention, excited for his coming presidency, and happy he didn't lose all his money gambling.

Jane:  As of September 8 she has been 10 years in Berkeley and has 10 months until she retires.

JP:  Sad missing the Reno convention, happy to help his son survey his property in Truckee.

Tamara:  Sad dollar for an adventure flying over St. Michael's where VP Cheney lives.

Acting Program Chair Denise then introduced

Roberta and Jim Rockwell from The Miracle League.

Roberta feels lucky to have as a second job the opportunity to introduce folks to The Miracle League.  The Miracle League (TML) builds baseball fields and develops leagues for children regardless of their abilities; a place for kids who want to play sports but can't play on regular teams.  TML started seven years ago in Georgia.  Currently there are 32 fields in operation and 65 more under construction. Roberta has started The Alameda East Bay Miracle League. Her goal:  to build a rubberized field so that wheel chairs roll more easily over it and the ball rolls a bit farther.

One kid summarized his response to TML: "I get to play my favorite sport"!

We are doing well in the school system for the disadvantaged kids, but we are all but ignoring them in after school programs.  Currently 7000 Berkeley kids can't participate in team sports because of disabilities. TML will help with this challenge.

Roberta has had tremendous response from the Alameda community.  Land has been donated for a field.  But the building costs are scary:  $470,000 for building a rubberized field.  Roberta also wants to add a snack bar and restrooms ($150,000) and a playground ($40,000).  She is looking for donations and networking leads for folks she can enlighten.

Roberta was a phenomenal speaker with impressive presentation techniques.  She touched our hearts with her stories.

VC and Minerva led us in the Pledge of Allegiance

One quick aside:  Our Sharon sent 15 boxes of donations for the Circle K garage sale.  VC went through the boxes to consolidate them (hmmm, perhaps to get first dibs on the treasures?).  Well she found a treasure; a bunny rabbit plate from the 1900's worth at least $375.  The morale of this story, be sure to check your donations before giving them to VC!

Good luck to our California Bears this Saturday.

KIWANIS CLUB     u  THE CLUB ON THE MOVE!!u   BERKELEY, CA

Another totally chaotic early SUMMER afternoon in the company of great friends at a meeting of:

THE ROWDIEST

BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

"Gorgeous" George M. was collecting your money at the ticket table.  He checked in 14 hungry folks + some who brought their own lunch + some who just came for the comraderie of the group.  "Got The Beat" Bob R. led us in a hearty GBA with only two spots that needed assistance!!  "Oh Lordy" John P. gave a short thanks for "the weather, the folks, and Kiwanis" invocation.  "Lively" Leo I. collected your fines… and there were plenty.

Guests were none.. But Circle K was present in the form of Joe, Anthony, Nga and Cheriz.  They are doing many things during the summer- much of which includes the use of some van.

Note of interest:

Coming SOON

      Like this Friday- July 27th

Joe announced that the monthly K family dinner will be at TUK TUK THAI- 6:30 to 8:00pm…  A sign up sheet went around.  This editor didn't see who signed up… but plan on coming because these dinner events are a ton of fun and laughs.  And… you'll be able to ask the "kids" what they are doing as this editor didn't catch much of what was said due to the noisy "meetings" Ed L. was carrying on much of the time.  Did hear that they will be working at the Berkeley Kite Festival this Sunday, and that some will be going to the Circle K International Convention in Portland next week.

As noted in the previous week's bulletin, there was a HUGE interclub to San Leandro last Tuesday (13 in all). Duane L. put in a L$ for "forgetting??" to show up for breakfast at Albany El Cerrito as he was expected to be the fourth for an interclub there.  And… there was no interclub at Castro Valley Hayward that evening… we do have fun wherever we go!!!!  Interclub chair Bill C. talked about an interclub tomorrow at Richmond for lunch, but no takers!!!!

Bob B. was reminded that today is his birthday.  He received two HB songs… one from Virginia solo, followed by one from the club.  We think he prefered the one from the club.  Bob put in JJ$$ that we "remembered" his birthday.  For three years the Torrence Club did not.  We hope you had a nice day, Bob.

JJJJLLLL$$:  There were lots and lots of happy and sad $$$s… Bettye L. let us know that even though she is retired she is working – doing visiting of the elderly…. (I think that happens a lot to those who retire!!!)  Leo I. had a L$ that Bettye hasn't visited him yet!  Bob R. is J that we sing on key ??? most of the time.  Retread Pres. Egeberger put in 20JJL$ that he will miss District Convention in Reno but will be on vacation with his family in Mexico.  A very J5$ from Denise H. for the freshly made pear/plum jam from Virginia's kitchen.  Sandy H. was L that there was no interclub at Albany El Cerrito.  Circle Ker Joe put in $$$ because he didn't introduce his fellow Circle Kers when he got up to give his report to the club.  He then proceeded to introduce them to us!!

Debra W. put in a very J$ for sitting next to Ed L. while at the San Leandro interclub.  Virginia C. was very J that she and Bill went to see Johnny Mathis with the San Francisco Symphony Saturday night.

John P. was J for something, but we had a hard time hearing because of Ed L. and all his talking!

Jack R. handed out information to those already signed up for District Convention in Reno.  As usual he assigned specific "seminars" for those of us to attend.  Ed L. will be going to "Hot, Hot, Hot- Salsa Dancing" while Debra W. attends "Hip Action- Arabian Dancing".  Denise H. was heard to say that her dad always gives the fun classes to other folks and makes her attend things like "Basic Board Responsibilities and Risk Management" and "Secrets of Public Speaking".  No one was assigned to "Wine Tasting- Red or White?  Which One Tonight?"  We were advised that Jack R. will have a suite- and an open hospitality room the whole time he is there… Wow!!  I think I saw ten or eleven folks signed up to go.  Leo I. had a L $ that he won't be attending this year- and will really miss it.

Time for the speaker of the day.  Daniel Kald was introduced by Duane L. as a former Key Clubber from LA some 30 years ago (Daniel told us he is attending his 30th high school reunion in another month, and he remembers his time in Key Club as a special time.  He applauded Kiwanis for its service to communities and children)  Daniel is a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists and spoke to us about the Global Warming's Impact on California.  No matter your own personal opinion on this topic, the more global warming emissions are reduced, the less severe the consequences will be.  Simple things such as buying a more energy efficient automobile would be a beginning.  The energy choices we make today will influence the climate our children and grandchildren inherit.  Surf the web for more information on AB32: Global Warming Solutions Act passed by the CA State Legislature on August 31, 2006.

And so another 90 minutes had passed.  Retread Pres Jeff, having a difficult time selecting someone to lead the Pledge, asked Circle Ker Joe to select another Circle Ker:  Joe in turn asked Nga (our district publications editor for Circle K) to do the honor.

If you missed today, know that you were missed.  Lunch is a fun time to catch up with those we don't see at any other time of the week, or it might be a chance to meet and make a new friend, - or just come out and watch some wacky people!!!

HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY

FABULOUS WEEK

07-17-2007

July 17, 2007             Printer/ Mailer, Duane Leonard

KIWANIS  CLUB         u    A Club……On The Move u   BERKELEY,  CA

And we were "moving" around for our Tuesday meeting (the City Club unavailable due to pipe upgrading).  A group met at Albany/ElCerrito for their 7:30 breakfast meeting.  Another group met at the San Leandro Club.  Those twelve (VC, BC, Ed, Phuoc, Deborah, Evie, New Bob, JohnP, Charlie, Bill, Linda and Tamara) were a riotous group and represented the Kiwanis of Club of Berkeley appropriately.

After we were recognized by the San Leandro president, Bill explained why we were attending "en masse"—having been kicked out of the City Club, we had to go somewhere to eat!  Evie followed and explained why our own Lt Gov was absent; Frank and Roberta are in Switzerland on a musical sojourn.

A large portion of the meeting was devoted to Happy and Sad Dollars; our group made a sizeable contribution to their coffers. Terri Neumann, the designated fine collector, was pleased to collect those Berkeley Dollars.

--VC:  happy to be at San Leandro.

--Phuoc:  whose phone rang loud and clear, apologized, $$ in hand.

--Tamara:  happy to be there, sad she was a bit tardy 'cuz she misread her Mapquest instructions.

--New Bob:  $$ to explain why he moved to our area (public transportation here is so much better than LA's).

--Linda:  A fistful of sad dollars for the worst month ever—lost crown, dead transmission, stolen purse, tenant suit.  But there was also a fistful of happy dollars for the seven grandkids joining her and Bill in Hawaii.

--Ed:  $$ to explain why we were there "en masse".

--BC:  $$ to explain why we were there "en masse"; and happy dollars for the completion of a Round Robin (great job, Bill).

And, yes, a number of San Leandroians started to give $$ to find out WHY we were there.  Hmm, this may be one of those trends you had to be there to appreciate.

The Talk of the Day was presentations by two folks that had attended the recent International Convention in San Antonio.

One of the speakers talked about a late night conversation (yep, at a bar) where folks were talking about the moment they went from being a member of Kiwanis to being a Kiwanian (the moment they understood what being a Kiwanian truly meant), that "ah-ha" moment.

What a wonderful idea (when did I become a "Kiwanian" in the true sense of the word?) for us to explore, perhaps as a round table discussion at a future meeting.

Other highlights included the results of key amendments:

--voted no on the concept of shared membership with only one paid membership.

--Voted down corporate membership.

--Voted yes on a resolution to explore collaboration with Rotary, Lions and Optimist-- to put the power of all the clubs behind one focused international goal.

--Established the role of CEO for the first time.

Convention presentations focused on ways to enliven meetings:

--Try new things!

--Have the speaker as the first item on the agenda.

--Make sure folks sit at different tables each week.

--Have different types of meetings throughout the year (breakfast meetings, cocktail meetings…).

--Have a meeting where folks ask each other a set list of questions.
