Summer Doldrums
Seven Kiwanians and Five Circle K'ers gathered for a quiet summer meeting.  Later we played the game, where are our members?  If you can, please call one member who wasn't there to be sure they're okay. Average = 2.5 BK'ers per table.

RB presided.  Lunch money was on the honor system with PK collecting off and on.  PK also led the song.  FB provided harmony.  It sounded pretty good in fact.  JR invocatificated.  DH & FB fought over who would introduce our guest, Zach Sorgen, 2008 BK Foundation Scholarship Winner.

Circle K Makes us Proud (Again)
Diana Tran introduced Internationally acclaimed Circle K members Chris Hung, Spirit/Social Chair; Sally, MRP Chair and origami maker-extraordinaire; BK luncheon regular Nina Yang. DT reported on 24 hour service. Social at the Marina, Berkeley Kite Festival  Info Booth (cold but fun); Tennis Ball cutting.  They have eight going to Cal-Nev-Ha in Reno.  BTW, MRP stands for Membership Recognition Program.

Interruption
LH (Linda Hannawalt) arrived waving a big check, so she escaped the late and secret greeter fines.
USS Hornet this Saturday
DH is putting on a fundraiser this Saturday at 10 a.m. on the USS Hornet.  Sixteen are going.  Money was already due, and the deposit check cut today.  You'd have to make a BIG contribution to show up without a reservation at this time. JE questioned how if reservations had to be in a week in advance and we're making the deposit today…how is that working?  A: We're special! If you need a map, call Denise.

HB & Late Arrivals
EJ got the Birthday song sung.  Oakley Kiwanis Installation is this Saturday Evening.  Looks like an interclub of DH, RB, FB, BC & VC. DL arrived late, Mimi of Circle K arrive late, but got HB sung for her.  SH arrived late but carried the checkbook.  Total now 10 Kiwanians.

QUIZ
Where is everyone?  TP lost a key person just before a big trip.  On the 24th both ½ Pres's will be otherwise engaged, so DH presides.  JP is taking care of Traudel.  Who else is missing?  Call!

HANNAWALT REPORTS
Linda hasn't been letting the grass grow under her feet.  No siree.  She provided our quote of the week:  "Starting a non profit is not a non-profit activity"

Linda has done 192 quilts year to date.  27 went to WWII Vets and one a week to Homeless prenatal moms.  She also teaches at several locations throughout San Francisco.  She makes sure her students give one of every three quilts to the community.  She has noticed that when quilts are made for others, the pride of the makers increases.

Linda connected with Mothers Against Senseless Killing (MASK) in a quilt supply shop.  Wow.  That led to being on the podium with the Mayor of Richmond and touting Kiwanis.  150 fleece scarves were made yesterday alone for St Anthony's Dining room to be given at Christmas.  We're exicted and proud of the fact that BK's Linda does so much.

We're all wishing Bill H successful surgery on Tuesday.

Happy / Sad $
PK enjoyed a birthday raffle. Target fun.   DL brought back a spoon for DH
DH acknowledged the gift
FB enjoyed the Ahwahnee with RB

Bear poop was sold $20 to Evie!
S'mores didn't sell, so went home w/ RB.
SH mourned the loss of a good friend.
The JP report is that there are good and not so good days with Traudel.  BKFoundation meets there tonight.

PROGRAM
JR introduced our speaker Zach Sorgen, BHS grad in 2008 now going to Vassar.  He described it as a small liberal arts school where he is majoring in sociology.  He particularly enjoyed the introduction the Sociology, his Criminology course and the study of Russian author Vladimir Nabakov (author of Lolita).  Zach is really interested in music.  He has already taken a course in the history of jazz, Composition, Musicianship skills & jazz piano.  He's interned at a record label, promoted, produced, acted (in Rent) and worked as Musical Director in "Spelling Bee".  He enjoyed working on relief for Haiti by working the open mic. One regret is his one "B"

Zach's had 38,000 U-Tube hits for an album production he did with some Berkeley High buddies going under the name "Thirst Busters".  Their signature song is entitled "So There".  It describes a shy high schooler having a crush but not knowing how to express interest in his object of affection.  See the URL

CAZ UPDATE
JR reports Caz looks beautiful.  Last weekend's concert was fabulous.  Anita did a great job on the donor's lunch.  Mark October 24 on your calendar to "Take Down" the camp.  Free Lunch provided.
