An Inspiring Intro
Today's motley crew consisted of S. Hearn trying to keep the receipts straight and sell tix, too, B. Rice belting out a blaring banter, J. Piercy invoking an inspirational word (on a moment's notice), & D. Wong on the fearsome finebox. (Ed. Note: Part of what JP was thankful for was the long-awaited return of the cooling fog – hey, I'm not sure everyone in the room agreed with that – what's wrong with a little SPF-139 sunscreen?)
Another streaming multitude of energetic college students was present today, headed up by Monica, our very own K Family Chair, Alex, District Secretary, and goodol' Gail, District K Family Chair.
Monica proceeded to tell us what a success that last weekend's Garage Sale was, netting over $750! And she told us of a couple other events they managed over the same weekend. Coming up: this Friday at 5:30 they will be doing the Big C Hike, Saturday from 7:00 – 3:00 Need a Change Day in San Francisco, ending up on Sunday with their own Berkeley Kiwanis at the Solano Stroll. Last but not least, tonight is their first General Meeting of the Year (145 Dwinelle). P. Khong asked for folks to join him to make a great big Interclub there! By the way, Monica was sporting, and m odeling, a brand new signature Berkeley CK T-shirt. You can get one yourself at the meeting tonight, or contact her anytime for a very special price of a measly $14.
Lots of Our Very Own
The Lt. Governor Installation last Saturday was a "rousing success," boasting attendance of over 90 people! Our very own E. Levitch , who was duly de-installed (save us all), re ported on it to us today, live in prime time. He claimed that, for the life of him, he couldn't figure out why anyone was thanking him, rather than ourselves (guess what, Ed?). Anyway, it was further reported that the food was plentiful and wonderful, such that PrezPK claimed that he couldn't even eat all of his steak (since this is unheard of, we will discount his entire story).
Then there's our very own Club Installation on Tues, Sept 23 at Chevy's (6:00 social, 7:00 dinner & formalities, $25 at the door). D. Haughin gave the outward impression today that she is still willing to take that foreboding oath.
The excitement keeps elevating for our 2nd annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept 20, starting at 6:30 at St. Mary Magdalene Church. J. Egeberg, P. Khong & J.Piercy were out in force at tables covering all the escape routes from the church after each mass this weekend. They sold a bunch mo re tix and will be out there next weekend for the grand sales finale. Next, T. Paradis is heading up the last-minute blitz of our sister clubs, by attending tomorrow's meeting of the Alameda Kiwanis Club. D. Wong will cover the Oakland Club next Monday – volunteers are still sought for Hayward-CastroValley, San Leandro , Richmond/El Cerrito. After all, it's already going to be the biggest and best ever. Lastly, S. Hearn produced some very nice-looking 50/50 tickets for the big raffle, for sale at a bargain price of only $10 each.
The warm-up pre-event at Speisenkammer Restaurant in Alameda was also a great success with a total of 8 BK'ers in attendance.
S. Hearn reminded us that another wonderful RIF Distribution is coming up on Sept 24 – 25 and passed a sign-up list.
J. Piercy announced a delay in the Longfellow drainage and library projects, alleging something about estimates from his well-acclaimed "architect" coming in over budget BUT mentioned again the kudos received from the O-F Bulletin Board project at Le Conte School.
Speaking of Key Clubs, Berkeley High has been quite active, as reported by D. Haughin. They are doing a shoreline cleanup on Sept 20 and are psyching up for a big presence at the RTC on Sept 27-28 at Camp Jones Gulch. Drivers are needed – sign up now! (PS, a report on what the other club, Oakland Tech, has been up to is due soon).
D. Wong provided a well-received Membership Report that Dan Pannell has submitted an application for membership (cheers emanated from the back of the room!)
Speaking of Solano Stroll, did we mention that our seamy Sec'y J. Rosano plans to wave to all the admiring crowd from atop a fancy fire truck (don't come just for that). He's been practicing his wave, you know (it's a little bit like Ms. Palin's).
Speaking of our trusty Sec'y J. Rosano, he had two other items of important business:
1. The roster was passed around for updating. Correct those mis-typed email addresses now!
2. GENERAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP: Changes to the By-Laws were distributed and discussed two weeks ago, and a summary was placed in the Kollegiate with two weeks notice for a vote today. It was moved, seconded, and carried (Piercy/Haughin) that the changes were adopted and the Secretary authorized to report them to International.
Other Important(?) Stuff
Secret Greeter B. Skrak caused 3 members to buy insurance (E. Goodman, D. Haughin, D. Leonard but didn't manage to nail anyone else.
E. Levitch celebrated BD # 85 with pride and dignity and hoped he would be in as good shape as B. Rice when he gets there. This prompted an
emotional competition about age, retirement, etc, -- not to be repeated. Nevertheless, he got a HBD tribute that he never wanted, but thought he did.
HS Dollars ETC
· D. Haughin, D. Leonard, E. Levitch, B. Fay offered big bucks for very important things.
· J. Egeberg had big ones that the Golden Bears seemed to have beaten the point spread last weekend (by about 50 points) and for the prospect of such a great Oktoberfest coming up
· J. Piercy used an excuse last weekend about a very honorable Alumni event at the oldest univ in Calif. (he's given up on his previous excuse involving poison oak)
· B. Rice was proud to be honored again at the Calif Academy of Sciences in S.F.
A Substitute Program
Our planned program (a Mr. G. Maxe) was forced to cancel at the last minute. A very good natured D. Wong jumped up at PrezPK's appeal, and talked briefly about her recent trip to China, and in particular to visit her father in Hong Kong. We noted very quickly that her father seemed to be a "funny guy" and his daughter a "funny gal." Then she got into Language as a topic, particularly, English vs the local dialect of Chinese.
Then, out of the blue, she created a game (language, that is), with 3"x5" cards strewn on the floor. Yeah, well there were two teams, the favored being E. Levitch, D. Haughin, B. Fay, T. Paradis (against the crack team consisting of slightly younger folks). Well, not many others in the room really understood the game, but we observed the following:
1. B. Fay went into battle, yelling out "Hoy, hoy, hoy…" which seemed to work every time.
2. The final competition every time was the ol' rock, paper, scissors, which B.K. seemed to wi n every time.
So, although not announced at the time, for the record, it appears that BK trounced the competition.
