Newsletter 081809

Every day at a Berkeley Kiwanis meeting is a sunshiny day! Some empty
seats, but all of us who were there had a great time. The microphone
was "dead", so if those speaking didn't speak up then nothing was
recorded!!! J. Piercy was at the check-in desk, B. Rice was asked to
lead our patriotic song (with most able assistance of F. Bliss), Rev.
Fay gave a short invocation, and we found out later that T. Paradis was
carrying around the fine fire extinguisher.

Several notes of interest coming along for you to enter into your
BRAIN!!

Greatest event of the day was the induction of our newest member, Diep
Nguyen. She is another of our wonderful Circle Kers that has been so
eager to join up with our great group!! Diep has been in the Kiwanis
family since she was a Freshman in High School. She majored in
architecture and education (WOW) and loves the design side of
architecture. She has LOVED the K. service and the friends she has
made, and her "childhood dream" was to become a Kiwanian. Diep will
boost the Southern CA. contingency in service and interclubbing!! Go BK
South!!! Welcome, DIEP!

$$$$ were numerous, as usual! B. Barnwell  that flyers
often don't arrive on time. F. Bliss  that the Friday night Division 2
team dinner at the Old Mexican Café in Old Town, San Diego was so
successful, and the money came out correct!! S. Hearn gave a $ that B.
Lowman is absent today and next week and $ for the new badge list. P.
Khong gave $$ for the San Diego "food outing" trip, down-there- back!
J. Egeberg ?s whether P.
Khong ever cooks, $$ for CAL football one
week closer, Oktoberfest one week closer, no strike for BART yet, and
Diep! B. Fay  he missed San Diego and  for our new member. Dack
Rosano kudos to VC for the FIZZ off win, and for Diep. J. Piercy
delighted to induct Diep and wondering why no other Circle Kers here.
R. Bliss  anniversary $$$ to the foundation. L. Hannawalt said her hat
had a great time at San Diego, the aquarium and $ for the drive home.
F. Bliss discovered he has a few years yet before he has to grow a
beard!

INTERCLUBBING
continues. B. Carpenter keeps us moving along from club to club. Our
main interclub this week was at the District Convention in San Diego.
F. & R. Bliss, P. Khong, D. Wong, E. Levitch, L. & B. Hannawalt, T. & A.
Paradis, and B. & V. Carpenter traveled the many miles to and fro-
attended the wonderful Div. 2 dinner, went to many seminars, visited
with many people, watched R. Bliss installed as a Trustee for the '09-'
12 years and VC installed as LTG for the '09-'10 year, and some
participated in the annual Div. 2 FIZZ OFF which BERKELEY succeeded in
winning. Now the trophy is back in our hands!! It must be stated that
ALL entries into the event were wonderful, and presentation by mixers of
the fizzes was outstanding!! Tha
nks to Hayward/CV, Alameda and San
Leandro and to all the tasters who voted for the very best!!!!!!!!!!!!
F. Bliss reported that Berkeley's entry was the finest he had ever
tasted! Go Gramma!!

R. Bliss gave a short review of some of the things that went on in San
Diego. Hands of Service is the theme of the 2009-2010 year headed up by
Gov. Roy Talley. We are encouraged to Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk-
and to work on MEMBERSHIP and GROWTH- taking future possible members to
service projects, socials, fundraisers, etc. before "asking" to join-
encouraging, perhaps, the desire to join before being asked!

In addition to all this EXCITING news we DID have a speaker!! If you
need to know anything about Watershed Management, ask Jeff Egeberg!
(Watershed: an area of land that drains downslope to the lowest point.
The water moves through a network of drainage pathways, both underground
and on the surface- often converging into streams and rivers which
become progressively larger as the water moves on downstream, eventually
reaching an estuary and the ocean.) A detailed power point presentation
led us through the planning of possible future action by cities and
citizens in the process using available water (rain!!!) in our Albany
Berkeley UC area. Rain gardens, green roof gardens, flow through
planters, rain barrels and cisterns, permeable surfaces- a
ll suggested
ways… there's lots more to think about. Thank you, Jeff, for this look
into an interesting topic!

Everyone appears to LOVE the monthly fundraising baskets. We had two in
July, so skipped the month of August, and L. Hannawalt offered to do one
for September. Can't wait to see what's inside!!

B. Carpenter is looking for TWO more folks to head over to San Leandro
next Tuesday, the 25th, for Kiwanis lunch. He and VC will be going. We
need this club for a round robin!!! It will mean missing our own BK
meeting at which our own A. Paradis will talk about fraudulent money.
We have an interclub already for Albany/El Cerrito that same Tuesday
morning. B. Skrak, D. Leonard, BFE Pres. Denise and B. and V. Carpenter
are signed up for that one.

And thus another meeting headed by BFE Pres. Denise is over.. Only 6
more meetings for her to lead!!! Time to think up a name for our new
Presidents- ie: ½ and ½ Pres.???

REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING EVENTS!!

1. YEAH sandwich making
2. LTG installation
3. Berkeley Kiwanis installation
plus the others listed on page 1 of this blurb!!

I leave you with the following (given to me by R. Bliss)

The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have
sought and found how to serve.
