Newsletter 081109

Always Up
Today we had another quality crowd, this time celebrating our little
sisters in Albany-El Cerrito. Yes, we had not only an official Interclub
with duly authorized representatives of that illustrious club, such as
Prez-Elect K. Euston & close friend Sherman Lam, but right behind them
came a very well-represented Albany High Key Club. Somehow, P. Khong
happened to sit at the same table and took credit for the presence of
them all. He introduced them so quickly that it couldn't all be recorded
here.
Meeting preliminaries included B. Rice still trying to get folks to sing
on key, J Piercy invocating that he is still an unabashed and
out-of-the-closet Fog Lover, B. Skrak trying to fine folks for no good
reason, and E. Goodman was stll trying to get folks to pay for lunch.
As far as other "guests," we had, shall we say, some very special
attendees, including a somewhat rare visit by new BK member Gail
Whats-her-name (well, can YOU say it??). On top of that (or can you top
it?), no less than three notorious past Lt Governors were saluted: R.
Bliss, E. Levitch, and V. Carpenter (she was actually in abstentia, but
some say that when hubby Bill is here, so is she; others say she's
always that way).

More Goings-On
Then we had a virtual plethora (not a real one) of announcements. Whew,
it's a happening scene!!:
 Dist
rict Convention in San Diego August 13 – 15: Egad, that's this
coming weekend! Last week we were worried about everyone showing up. Now
we know that E. Levitch is getting on an airplane, but he wasn't sure
where it was going to land.
 Solano Stroll is still Sept 13. Come one and all to "man" and "woman"
our booths.
 LtGov Installation is stillSept 10 – Elio's Restaurant in San Leandro.

 BK Club Installation is still on Sept 29 at spacious and elegant
Rancho Paradis in La-la-land (check your Mapquest)
 Testimony to Bob Payne – Aug 29, 5:30 pm – Spenger's $40
 Making Sandwiches at Sandra's last Monday was so much fun, she wants
to do it again! There were even some left over for the service project
at YEAH…

 RIF is now set for Sept 23 – 24. Mark your calendars!
 Sponsored Youth Report by P. Khong: (1) the BK Board Meeting on August
20 will be a doozie! All SY clubs are expected to submit their annual
budgets. Whew! (2) FYI, Fall Training Conference at Camp So & So is a
budget biggie.
The Circle K Experiment
Prez Josh pointed out that this is only the second year of summer
service and summer meetings. They have made some adjustments, and as a
result, it has been a huge success! He then introduced VP Nina and
0AFundraiser Ken. They had a baking party for kids from St. Andrews School
and THEN went over to paint St. Andrews Church, inside and out
(Michelangelo is worried about whether they did the ceiling, too).
Lastly, their annual Garage Sale is Sept 5 – 6, but just realized that
it's a busy weekend… Labor Day, the 1st home Cal football game, Bay
Bridge closed). I guess they don't read the "most unnecessary
publication in the world."
Couple of other notes: Their website has been down recently (sure, we
noticed), and 1st fall meeting is Sept 8 (mark your calendars, although
location is TBD).

Happy, Sad, and Otherwise

• J. Egeberg was happy that the Cal football season is another week
closer, and had another one (sad?) that he is still on the LtGov's email
distribution (the one with the campaign ads) and asked HalfPrezElect
(HPE) R. Bliss to speak about the shaky future of Division 2.
• Josh was very happy and excited about the UCBerkeley Circle K being
honored once again with mucho district awards (which he rattled off too
fast for this reporter). Congrats, CK!!
MMFINA
Fill-in Program HPE R. Bliss responded that Division 2 is down to 241,
versus 250

needed to be a division. Also, nine clubs are needed, versus seven. She
encouraged us all to get working on bringing in new members. Division
Two is on a "clo
se-watch" list.
She proposed the "Buddy System" for all the new members we'll be
getting. She went on to recommend the new book by Kiwanian Steve Siemens
– "Push-ups for People." Steve wants us all to walk around with "MMFINA"
on our foreheads. After much guessing, we figured out that it means "
Make Me Feel Important, Needed, and Accepted!"
Meanwhile, a certain member of the audience, who didn't have a clue as
usual, jumped up and sprawled out on the floor doing imitation physical
push-ups. Thank gawd they weren't the real thing. Anyway, most agreed
that this wasn't good ol' Steve's message.
Last but Not Least
Unfortunately, our lame-duck Secretary Gimpy informed us to make the
following deletions from our roster:
o George Maxe
o Jessica Padilla
o Jennifer Teer
o Haley Leventhal
The silver lining is that our new members still leave us (barely) in the
positive column.
