It was a double whammy today. We had a full quart (2 Pints) of President. Pint 1 was Tammy chairing the meeting and Pint 2 was Roberta. They were both glowering at us from the head table and then they were the program.
NEXT WEEK: (No, this is not the end of this Kollegiate, but I'm so excited to know ahead of time what next week's program is!) our own Bob Skrak will tell us all about his professional ice skating career. It's always great to know more about our members – even our long-time members. Hope he brings Joyce to keep himself honest!
Today started out pretty normal (considering two glowering Presidents) with first Evie, then Frank, and finally Phuoc holding down the ticket table. Bob Rice did his "thing", and you know, I think we were on key and pretty loud. Could it be that we are getting to know GBA?? The invocation was short, simple and presented by Duane. Jack (who is vying with me for the title "Grumpy" got to carry the fine box for the first time in years.
Pint 1 then tried to get into her script, but was only partially successful. After all VC and Grumpy were there interrupting her all the time and Gimpy was mumbling a bit himself. However, she (Pint 1) was able to
foist the raucous crowed off on Circle Ker Diane who introduced her support team of Ken and Mimi plus Josh who poked his head in just in time. He (Josh) claimed he had no class today since they are having mid-terms.
Diane rattled off all the stuff they did this past week, including providing vital support to our Club's Oktoberfest. There was some noise about there being more Kiwanis Youth (Circle K and Key Club) than "old folks" working that fund raiser. She called on Josh to report on the Fall Training Conference: it seems as though there are 60-65 Circle K planning to attend and transportation help is sorely needed. Did you note that number – 60-65!
Bill C reported 2 interclubs (#3 & 4) last week and rounded up a quartet to attend one this week, but I failed to record where.
There was a short discussion of the Oktoberfest and later a few H$ for all the youth help. Since the meeting the financial results have become a bit clearer with the major costs reported, and it looks like we may have cleared $3200 but there may still be some expenses not turned in.
VC was called upon for her LTG report and noted a good turn-out for the DCM on Sunday evening. After some mumbling
about something she also noted that there will be a big RIF distribution next week, but she had forgotten her sign-up sheet, so
passed around a blank one. Not sure there were any takers, but next Tuesday is time enough since it will "happen" the next day (28 October).
Denise introduced us to the Berkeley Kiwanis candy store (See's) which was displayed on a table for sale and Jack reported that the Cazadero Work Party on Sunday, 31 Oct, is pretty well organized.
In the meantime, there will be a work party at Denise's office on this coming Sunday to get going on painting the Salvation Army kettles, 9-12 or so. Wear painting clothes!
And, not to be ignored, the famous Berkeley Kiwanis Holiday Auction will be held on Tuesday, December 15. The drive is on for auction items, so get going. Our famous auctioneer duo (Sharon & Jack) will need lots of good items to foist off on unsuspecting attendees.
The new "team" held its first Board meeting last week. Actions included authorizing both Pints (Presidents), the Treasurer, the Secretary, and the President Elect to sign checks (2 signatures required). The budget proposal was discussed in detail along with some procedural changes based on the budget, but final action was delayed until next month to permit fine tuning.
A small committee was formed to complete development of the 09/10 Roster and the Club Storage Bin has been transferred to the Bliss garage at some financial savings. It was a loooong Board Meeting, and generated a suggestion that distribution of documents such as the Treasurer's Report
and proposals such as the new budget in advance (with the Agenda) to permit
individual review prior to the meeting may save some meeting time.
The Presidential "Pint 1 & Pint 2 Dog & Pony Show" (I am not ascribing those animal titles to either half-quart president) then commenced. There was general discussion of the coming year and some of the changes that were planned. Of even more importance, the committee list was distributed and expectations for each of the committees discussed. Even more important than that, the committee chairs were identified and in a few cases "Coordinators" (sounds more official than Subcommittee Chair) have been assigned. Bettye wasn't there, but I hope it's not too much of a surprise that her Service Committee has the programs for November!!
½ Quart Roberta will coordinate the following committees (with monthly program assignments as noted)
Youth Service – Bettye – Nov & May
Student Leadership – Phuoc – Jan & Jul
Community Service – Sandy – Mar & Nov
Satellite – Cheriz – "None"
½ Quart Tammy has:
Fundraising – Denise – Dec & Jun
Club Activities – Jack – Feb & Aug
Administration – John – Apr & Oct
Membership – (Unassigned) – None
Speaking of Cheriz, she made a surprise visit – and no she doesn't have a firm job lined up yet. She reported on all the Kiwanis and Sponsored Youth clubs she has visited, spreading the "word" about our great duo (UCBCKI & BK) here in Berkeley. She is not only generating interclub points, but lots of miles. There was a grin on Bill C's face. jp
