Newsletter 032310

At this, the Next to the Last meeting of March 2010, we were greeted with a smile at the  ticket table by D. Haughin.  Already people were buzzing around the room, busily shaking hands and extending friendly greetings.  That's a fun part of being a Berkeley Kiwanian!!

½ of the ½ presidents was still missing in action and the other ½ of the ½ presidents was hustling about, clipboard in hand, making sure that anyone who wanted to say anything was on her agenda.  That's organization!!   As pointed out by one J. Egeberg, the meeting really zoomed along.  J. Piercy, next month's meeting coordinator, was passing out April weekly meeting assignments.  WOW!!  That's two weeks ahead of schedule, and if you weren't here to complain, then know that you are on call when your name appears!!!

Great sunshine news is that Dr. Coe is back home again after some days in the hospital.  It would be a super idea to stop in and visit.  He might not recognize you, but having guests is fun!  D. Leonard commented on attending a memorial for C. Fitch and that it was good to remember the fun times.

On the SLP track:
Diane: (by herself today) reported that she'll be replaced soon by a newly elected K Family Chair representative.  Come next week to find out who that might be!  This weekend is Circle K Convention in Torrance, CA- Largest registration ever… and it'll be noisy- with UCB trying to get many of the awards available.
Phuoc:  (on the Oakland Tech Take Over last week).  They raised $452- double what they thought they would, and they are ecstatic and so grateful to their advisors, BK!!  Way to go!!
Oh My Gawd responded J. Egeberg!

You've been asking:  THE SPEAKER?
YES!  We had two, Donna Corbeil- Director of Library Services of the Berkeley Public Library, and David Snyder, Development Director of the BPL Foundation.  There is LOTS of interesting information about our Berkeley Central Public Library and the four branches

which altogether circulate over 1.9 million items a year and are planning on raising that to over 2 million this year.  Circulation is up due, in part, to the economy.  The library tries to have a wide variety of "stuff" to satisfy and support all that is going on in our community.  As well, things are being broken down in to "areas"- teen, children, adult, and the desire is to preserve the history of our library from its beginning.  The central (or main) library has undergone major renovations in the past few years.  On deck now are renovations for the Claremont and the North branches to begin next year, and then the proposed NEW buildings for the South and West branches.  Of course, a lot of this falls under bonds passed by Berkeley voters, but those funds do not cover the innards of the sites (equipment, bookshelves, etc. etc).  Thus the fundraising suuport of the Foundation!  There is so much more to this- Thank you for this informative update, Donna and David, and we look forward to seeing you for more updates in the future!

And thus I leave you with the following :
