KIWANIS CLUB u A Service Club on the Move u BERKELEY, CA

Great meeting today – almost full tables – but only a couple of Circle Kers. Jack was back in great form and his Daughter (Denise) even brought along his Grand-Daughter for him to brag about. Bob Rice brought along his Brother-In-Law, Leon Paulson, and led us in GBA. Bettye was on the list for Invocation (but had forgotten) and so was a bit lengthy as she made sure to cover everything we are thankful for.

The “Cruisin Carpenters” were back, but if you were present you already knew that from all the noise. Fortunately for us, Linda (who was on the same cruise) is still out there in the Far East somewhere. Can you imagine the pandemonium if both had been back at the same time!!

Charlie Fitch had a very important announcement (it came so early I don’t think Retread was fast enough to get a suitable fine) regarding his (Charlie’s) double dose of scalp surgery to get shuck of a cancer. The first dose was the biopsy sample which came out positive resulting in the second try which went OK until that night – but the details are down in the H$ section.

And we had a big day. Debra (who wasn’t wearing her badge because JP had left it home) was celebrating her 23rd birthday by having lunch with us. In the telling it came out that her roommate had ginned up a special cake for the celebration last night. It

was a meatloaf cake which, I guess, served as dinner. Wonder if there was any desert?

Not to be outdone, we move on to the Old Guy table and note that Charlie F will be 91 on Easter Sunday, Bob R. hits 96 (which resulted in the chant “4 More Years”. Even tho the BD bunch didn’t seem interested in a musical salute, Retread called on VC to lead us in Happy Birthday. I believe the names where shortened to “you guys”, but that wasn’t nice since Debra isn’t.

Secretary Jack, back in his accustomed chair, and not talking much about his appendectomy (and not showing his scars), announced (again) the slate of officers and directors proposed for next October. You saw it last week, so no repeats, but we are still short one Director. It’s hard to believe that we don’t have someone who will volunteer – we do have “Officers and Directors” insurance so you don’t need to worry about being sued for malfeasance in office.

Jack also passed out the Gualala sign-up sheet for members. The Circle K have their own sign-up system. It was interesting that our sheet had names already entered even though this was the first “passing”. It promises to be an entertaining (and tiring) weekend, so we hope to get all of you laggards to add you name to Jack’s list. It is rumored that the Gualala staff will take care of all the meals, so we only have to put up with Jack’s cooking for the Saturday night steak feed. Maybe that will help make up some minds to attend.

And, to generate interest in the Gualala outing, Retread has dug out the video he cobbled together after the 2002 Work Party and is threatening to show it to us sometime this month. Fortunately, Chair George seems to have all the speaker slots filled!

Not to be outdone, Roberta noted that the Cazadero work Party will be the Saturday before Gualala (April 21) and a sign-up should be available next Tuesday.

I’ve been asked to report that next week’s Kollegiate, which is scheduled to be written by Sandy, will be written by VC. That means that on the 4th Tuesday Sandy will write the Kollegiate that VC was supposed to write. But, VC will be on another cruise on the 4th Tuesday. While we are at it, you should know that George will write the 3rd Tuesday Kollegiate since Tammy is off somewhere trying to find money, or oil, or something, and now will “owe” George. And you thought this rag just sprang up overnight every week!

Duane gave a short report on the scholarship committee. 28 applications have been received and judging will start this weekend. We will be awarding a total of $40,000 in scholarships this year.

While he was on the floor (figuratively) Duane also mentioned that plans are firming up for our first annual Oktoberfest to be held the last Saturday in September. Even George knew that the week BEFORE October 1 is THE Oktoberfest in Munich, so this is perfect timing. Retread noted that he has a line on an “Ompah” band, and the plans are that everyone will wear Lederhosen or Dirndel. Google a source now so you’ll be prepared.

The DCM still has important work to be done (find a Lt Guv for next year) and it is hoped that lots of us will attend on April 12 to get that done. So far, only Duane held up his hand!

Charlie F had the first, and most important H$. When his scalp surgery broke open the first night he called his doctor’s emergency number and was really happy to get piped thru to his doctor who immediately came in from his/her home in Marin County and fixed Charlie up. Now, that’s the kind of doctor to have, but none of us wanted to volunteer for scalp surgery, no matter who the doctor!

There were lots of H$, but there’s not much room. Do have to mention that Bill C gave a H$5 that he’s back from the cruise with both VC and Linda! Denise is in escrow! Bob Skrak is sad that “his” Iceland is closed (as are lots of folks).

So, JP introduced Fran Gallati, CEO of the Berkeley-Albany YMCA. Fran came out of the Northeast Coast with a degree in Urban Studies (!) and started work back there. But in ’91 he did a cross-country bike ride, ending in Berkeley. Thought this was a “cool” place and went to work for the Downtown B-A YMCA as a Youth Program Director. He has since risen to the exalted position of CEO.

Fran did things a little differently. He said a few nice words about the help Berkeley Kiwanis has given “his” YMCA and then asked us to feed him questions that we have about the YMCA. He took a few notes and then launched into extemporaneous answers to those questions. GREAT PROGRAM.

Sorry to run out of room. Come to the Annual Meeting of our Club and YOUR Foundation next week.
