KIWANIS CLUB u THE CLUB ON THE MOVE!!u BERKELEY, CA

A lovely SPRING- warm, sunny, gorgeous- day, in the company of great friends at a meeting of: THAT BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

This is the type of day to have a BBQ or picnic, especially since our sitting LTG F. Bliss advised us that we are the Division “buzzing with service”- (see list below for what BK has to offer!!) – and there were many, many busy bees in the room making so much noise it was evident no one had control!

Two gentle men greeted us at the ticket table; your money was taken by the above mentioned LTG, and he was supervised by business manager G. Maxe. (This is the title GM says he has assumed!!!) Our resident song leader, B. Rice, led us in a robust GBA (the ending measures are always harmonious!!!). The Rev. R. Bliss was fairly short on the words- and asked for blessings on our upcoming service events. “Mr Hip” D. Melandry had no trouble running around with the retread fine box. The new hip must be working well!! If there was an S.G. (Secret Greeter) he/she remained unknown to the rest of us, and no fines were put into the tire for the non- shaking of a friendly hand. However, you did need to pick up and pin on your badge- left in the badge box it cost you $$$.

Guests were introduced. The ACE team of VC and BC introduced their district manager (and reserve cop) Gary Freedman. Some folks stated he looked familiar- is that because he has “stopped” them before- or because he has been to BK before? Retread Pres. Egeberg stated that he had invited his better half, but she chose to go elsewhere (shopping maybe?).

Immediately called to the podium was the new “Retread” Circle K Family Chair Joe!!! He introduced, to a huge round of applause, the new Golden Gate Division LTG- our wonderful Gail N.

Other members were present… including Hedwig, Alex, Virginia, Ashley, & Jenny. Busy Bees??? You bet. Adopt A Creek,

Chapparal House, , Relay For Life and the first DCM of LTG Gail are all on the calendar for this weekend. Many Kiwanians (and guest GF) gave monies towards the Relay For Life fundraiser.

And on the calendar for Berkeley Kiwanians!!

Sat., April 21- Camp Cazadero work party under the

direction of new member D. Wong.

April 27-29- Camp Gualala under the direction of

incoming Pres. P. Khong.

May 6- MLK Jr. High Track cleanup under the direction

of D. Melandry.

May 9 & 10- RIF Distribution under the direction of

V. Carpenter.

G. Maxe and Circle K. Service Chair Hedwig are planning a monthly (2nd Tuesday) meeting in which to discuss upcoming and possible service projects in which we all can participate if we desire. Tonight will be the first of such meetings- this one to be held at Chipotle Restaurant near the campus. Any and all of us are invited to attend this monthly meeting, make suggestions, etc. etc. George’s and Hedwig’s hope is to have a project available for us to participate in every weekend.

In the meantime: We heard from sitting LTG F. Bliss that there will be a DCM at the San Leandro Library this coming Thursday. He would LOVE a huge Berkeley turnout to hear Circle K orator Alex Chu give his winning oratory speech… and help elect a new LTG.

HappySad $$$ were numerous. J. Alexander is most delighted that she will be going to Gualala. She is JJJJ that past Circle Kers Michael John and Ivy will be getting married 7/7/07. MJ will be back from Afghanistan soon. (If this editor sends Jane the onion pie recipe, some pies may show up at Gualala after all!!). S. Hearn received a call from B. Lowman that she (B) was L she couldn’t attend Kiwanis today because she was J she was going on a vacation (and this from a retired person!) B. Fay was J for C. Fitch’s new hat and L for only three Berkeley Kiwanians at the Richmond Theater fund raiser this past Thursday evening. P. Khong was J that he attended for the first time that wonderful event. C. Fitch had a very J$ for his new hat (celeberating 91 years young). D. Leonard is very J that he has rowed to Hawaii and back on his rowing machine. B.Rice is exceptionally J that he has his glasses back after two weeks in repair!! B. Barnwell is thrilled J that he is going to a Wednesday $2 per ticket A’s game. Your Retread Pres. came up with a J thought- the motto for cruise ship service clubs could be “On The Move.”

Yes… We did have a “speaker”… Retread Pres assisted by Gimpy Secretary led our annual BK meeting- First off we heard the list of the slate of officers for the upcoming term. As follows:

President: Phuoc Khong

Imm. Past : Retread Egeberg

Vice Pres: George Maxe

Treasurer: Sandy Hearn

Secretary: Gimpy Rosano

Directors: 2007-2009 Directors: 2007-2008

John Piercy Evie Goodman

Eliz. Turnbloom Virginia Carpenter

    Bettye Lowman

J. Alexander had to instruct J. Piercy on how to make a motion- which was seconded and passed. So those are your new officers beginning Oct. 1.

Then up to the podium came D. Leonard, head of the Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation. He gave us an overview of our Foundation over the years. Officers serve without compensation for a period of six years. Our assets are now in a managed account with Vangard, very much to the relief of the foundation board members!! We do not touch the principle, giving scholarships only from our gains. Scholarships may be awarded to students from the Berkeley, Albany and El Cerrito school districts.

This year there are 38 (I think that’s the number) applicants for 10 available scholarships. The scholarship committee of 10 members will be making their selections soon according to committee head T. Paradis… Hmmm … wonder where she is?? Did she take off to Scotland with some of the gains???

If you want more information on the BK Foundation give Barrister Leonard a call!!!

Don’t know who the rest of the speakers are for the month of April, but bring friends and/or future members to our luncheons. The more the merrier, and we really are a lot of fun!!!!

SAQFEK: To get more out of life….

      give more of yourself.

“Mom”

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

Dale Carnegie

Have a great week…
