On the Move!
Well!, your scribe strolled in a little late, only to be pounced on for a fine. Someone had let the Berkeley High kids out of school and the Key Club had taken over the meeting. A whole slew of them stood at the front of the hall. It didn’t seem late, to me, but apparently our young folks are sticklers for promptness. If Re-tread had been running the show, I might have gotten in under the bell.
So, starting from behind, I scurried to my seat to put down my note pad, where I was informed that Mr. Piercy has started to take the notes for me. I paid for my meal ticket and got my badge and went to see Mr. P. for the notes so far. Not a lot of good it did: Virtually unreadable. Best I can tell is that Tickets were handled by Evie (maybe with Grumpy’s help) The patriotic song was led by Bob R., Invocation by Evie G. And something is happening on Saturday—looks like “GholnCase” Who knows? Not our Secretary, not me, maybe a Key Club or Circle K event. With a certain amount of sleuthing, I have concluded that it must be the UC Circle K’s Charity Showcase Saturday, 3/17, 7pm-9pm (155 Dwinelle)
Come and enjoy a night of performances with proceeds going to PTP! Tickets were being sold at the meeting, but you can probably get them at the door, too.
April 7 (yes, the day before Easter) is Total K Day. —Grumpy’s notes said nothing more. If we’re lucky, more details will follow on subsequent Tuesdays.
By the time I sat down with my plate, Peter Angel, the Key Club President, was merrily collecting Happy/Sad $$. There were lots, and I didn’t catch them all, but here’s a highlight:
Evie—DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Day went well. A teacher who and been there in earlier years is returning. And the kids still loved the Bill Cosby story she read. A special moment came when one of the third-grader’s came up to give her a “Kiwanis Handshake”. He had heard that Kiwanians liked to shake hands and be friendly.
Frank—That he heard from Roberta, who is in China for a few weeks. And for K-family bowling on Saturday.
Dennise, Ed, Bettye—For the Key Club being here.
Deborah—For DEAR Day. H$ She really enjoyed it, but Sad$ that had spent her cash to buy the book she read to the kids and didn’t have much left for Key Club Auction. Also H$ that she was accepted into the UC teacher training graduate school progam, so she’ll be in Berkeley for a while yet.
Tons of delicious stuff was auctioned. All seemed to fetch a goodly price. I don’t think anything went for less than $20—most for more.
Then came the challenges:
First, Each table was to guess how long it would take Key-Clubber extraordinaire, Derek Fukumori to unscramble a Rubic’s Cube. All but the closest guess had to contribute to the growing Key Club Kitty. The amazing feat was accomplished in 37 second! Wow! Years ago, when they first came out I had one—Never did get it back to its proper alignment.
The next challenge, or rather set of challenges, had us older folks trying to list as many items as we could think of, within one minute, in the category named. The first challenge was “Foreign Car Makes”, then there was “Songs with ‘Love’ in the title” (our table, full of singles, flunked that one—is there a connection?), then “How many ways can you say ‘hello’ in different languages?” (I think our table won that one. We may not know songs of love, but we are internationally friendly.) The last I can remember was “Synonymns for Big”. Items were counted after each round, with loosing tables ordered to contribute $ for the number of items they fell short of the winning table. Thankfully, time ran out, or we would all be impoverished. The count was not completed before we left, but the money bag was clearly seen to be bulging.
Key Clubber Emily Barnett led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. And the meeting was adjourned.
Oh!, and don’t forget: The St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Get-together at the Paradis’ 5:30 on Sunday.
