KIWANIS CLUB u A Service Club on the Move u BERKELEY, CA

There was a little confusion today. Virginia was supposed to write this rag, but she was nowhere to be seen (the checkbook had been “dropped off”.) It was actually George’s turn this week, but he had switched with Virginia at her request. So, George couldn’t handle it today and got Grumpy to switch for his next week’s assignment. Wonder if Virginia will take that since she owes one.

Then Retread ignored logic and custom by fining five members who had not shaken Secret Greeter Don’s hand even tho 4 of those members had been in the room when Don showed up. Common courtesy is that later arrivals shake the hands of earlier arrivals – the earlier folks are probably eating their meals. In particular, Grumpy was long and loud about the injustices being foisted upon the members, but still paid his fine. One hopes (but doesn’t have much confidence) that Retread will at least announce HIS rules for the Secret Greeter scam.

Not too sure what was going on with the ticket sales today. On the list was George (it was “his” day) but he was relieved to have Denise step up to the plate. Then (behind my back) Roberta replaced Denise and later I saw George back at the table. How many BKers does it take to sell 20 or so tix?? I guess the answer is 3.

Retread tried to get George to lead GBA, but he only agreed if Ed would help. In the ensuing confusion, Retread fell back on reliable Bob R, but before Bob could get started George and Ed had to give a “warming up” demo. But we finally did sing – and pretty well, too. Phuoc appeared surprised to find that his name was on the list for Invocating, but with hardly a pause he was right on. And Elizabeth (Tourniquet) handled the failing fine box. “Can’t someone repair it??”

Have you noticed the smile on Denise’s face? She is so happy in her new home that she’s even planting vegetables. What’s she doing? Trying to take over from Bob B (who brought Bing Cherries today).

Announcements:

Linda: WE ARE NOT MOVING BOOKS AT THE EMERSON LIBRARY THIS SATURDAY! The school district has decided that rather than make all that mess the shelve areas will be sealed off.

Denise: The YPSO Pops Concert, sponsored by this Club, is Sunday, June 10 at the Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland. Tickets will be mailed out this week and all Kiwanians are encouraged to attend and bring friends and family. Tickets will also be available at the door. We’ve been supporting YPSO since its founding, so don’t drop this ball.

ROBERTA: A “bunch” of dolls were delivered to Oakland Children’s Hosp. I missed the actual quantity.

FRANK (LtGuv): District “TAG” training is scheduled for June 9 from 9-3. It’s a program to “enervate” Kiwanis Clubs. He needs to know yesterday who will attend.

GEORGIA PETRI (Immed. Past. LtGuv) was here to present our Immediate Past President (Ed) a Distinguished Past Pres. Award and Ed & Jack the Division Pres/Sec Team Award, and all of us the Distinguished Club Award. Seems like a clean sweep for Berkeley Kiwanis!!

Just to make sure he gets a Distinguished LtGuv award, our own Ed, Div. 2 LtGuv Elect, will attend the training at Bass Lake this next weekend. Well, at least he is scheduled. He will be driving himself, and who knows where he will end up???

It was noted that we had in attendance 2 Berkeley Past LtGuvs, 1 serving LtGuv and 1 LtGuv elect. Does this Club show leadership??

Bill F introduced our speaker, Arthur Bloond, as a seminary-educated Episcopal Priest who has found a new calling: Trying to make Americans realize how badly we are treating the environment and how lazy we have become. He didn’t leave us out there by ourselves, tho, he also spoke about how the Chinese are ignoring not only the health of the environment but the health of their people by not placing adequate standards or restriction on industry. He noted that we ship our “unrecyclables” to China from this area because it’s cheaper than trying to recycle them here or landfill them. But if it

is “garbage” it gets shipped to the Altamont Pass Disposal site.

Arthur pointed out that we (Americans) have a surfeit of “stuff”. We are still in love with all that stuff and thus it fills storage lockers, basements, attics, garages and, eventually, landfills. The industrial revolution has given us so many “comfort” items and upgrades them so fast that we just hide away the “old” model so that the “new” model shows how “with it” we are. Here in California, particularly, he notes that the population explosion has vastly increased the load on our land and water but has not provided much, if any, new. In a word, “It can’t just go on forever”. (Well, that’s 7 words if the contraction is counted as 2.) It’s also a national problem that just doesn’t seem to be getting attention (probably because “garbage” is not a political draw), but he noted that California seems to be trying to get out ahead of the crowd.

With that, we were out of time. There was no announcement of “Next Week” When Sandra Hearn’s month starts (and she’s out of the country), so c’mon out and see what kind of surprises our President can dig up for us. And if it is too boring, we can all pile up on Retread and give him a bad time. That’s always fun. Possibly he will have a set of “rules” for the Secret Greeter scam available for distribution. Probably won’t satisfy Grumpy, tho.

“When we don’t enjoy what we do, we only nick the surface of our potential.”

Dennis Wholey

KIWANIS CLUB u THE CLUB ON THE MOVE!!u BERKELEY, CA

A lovely SPRING- pleasantly warm, sunny, gorgeous- day, in the company of great friends at a meeting of:

THAT BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

(that was called to order about 5 minutes late!!)

If you were looking closely you might have seen the”Proper” way of doing push-ups in the form of a prone G. Maxe- behind the ticket table- educating none other than E. Levitch.

In the meantime a smiling VC greeted you at the ticket table… took your money… and, if you were lucky, handed you a lunch ticket. (It all balanced out in the end!!) Resident song leader B. Rice led a fairly decent rendition of GBA (with only one time of having to cover one’s ears!). A short invocation by J. Piercy, in part thanking for the great weather, was followed by the announcement of the carrier of the fine tire D.Melandry. With the introduction of guests we welcomed back Jan and her seeing-eye dog, the guests of Rev. Fay. (I LOVE that dog!!) B. Skrak then stood up and announced that he was the SG (Secret Greeter)- and immediately was interrupted by Retread Prez. Egeberger who was then unable to levy fines for not shaking hands.

We’re missing our busy little bees-

those wonderful Circle Ker’s who are either in finals or maybe gone home already… The youngest among us today was D. Wong, our newest member- and most energetic supporter of the Kiwanis family. In honor of our newest members G. Maxe announced that there will be a meeting NEXT week, May 29th, at 11:30 am- just one hour before our regular meeting- at which time new members may ask of old members (!!) the ins and outs of our BK that they might have interest or questions about. Probably wouldn’t hurt some of us to show up for that!!!! This meeting will be held in the same room as our regular meeting so you won’t have to wander from place to place at the BCC!! Come on in for K. education!!!

And on the calendar for Berkeley Kiwanians!!

June 2: Emerson School in Oakland.

Boxing up the library. Meet at 9:30am. Contact G. Maxe about this as S. Hearn is out of town.

June 10: YPSO. You will be receiving tickets in the

mail that you are asked to sell to your

neighbors and friends so that attendance

at the event will be HUGE!! And do

volunteer to work at the concert.. IT

WILL BE GREAT!!! When asked about our association with YPSO, S. Hearn stated that YPSO is the 2nd oldest Youth Orchestra in the country, organized in 1936. Its members are mostly high school age. We have been supporting this Pops Concert for many, many, years.

Happy birthday wishes went out to J. Piercy (the 24th- 1931) and V. C. (the 25th- 1944 and proud of it!). In spite of protests- the song was sung. And we will celebrate on the appropriate days- Thanks!!!

Sunshine wasn’t shining for C. Fitch. Reported by D. Leonard: Charlie is back in Alta Bates- due to a bad cough- and a visit from his doctor. He’s in room 603 (but check before going as he may have gone home already!!).

Recognition was given to T. Paradis (she was called to the podium) for her hard work on the scholarship program- She had to pay $5.00 for the honor.

JJJJLLLL were fairly numerous, but this editor noticed that D. Melandry did an outstanding job of carrying around the heavy tire- so his hip (or knee??- don’t remember!!) must be working well!! J. Alexander was delighted with the K. family dinner held at the Bliss home. Many Circle Kers made PT dolls with other Kiwanians B. Price, E. Levitch (and his Jane), G. Maxe, E. Goodman, P. Khong, and R. Bliss (who reported that she delivered 80 dolls to Oakland Children’s Hospital), enjoyed great food, and superb fellowship. This editor understands that the next K family dinner may be in July. Hope so!!! Rev. Fay reported that he read in the Berkeley Voice about Berkeley Kiwanis giving away $40,000.00 in scholarships – G. Maxe was our PR person- thanks, George!! E. Levitch put in a sad one for missing the board meeting. B. Price put in a sad one for leaving his coat and salad at one table- then sitting at another and forgetting where the coat and salad had gone. He found same midway through the meeting. Retread Prez. Egeberger commented on the Berkeley High awards assembly this evening which he will attend and mention the scholarships given to 5 BHS students. B. Lowman so happy to be here. D. Wong happy she actually worked this morning. S. Hearn happy for good catscan report, upcoming trip to Austria, library pack up work project- and just JJ. B. Rice happy about a Berkeley Public Education Foundation dinner he attended- and he watched as they collected between $5 and $6 thousand $$$ in the one evening. D. Melandry happy about a trip to Santa Fe, and B. Skrak happy about a cruise on the Delta (but L no whale sightings). Dr. Coe put $$ in, but this editor missed his comments. As you can see we were a fairly JJJ group today.

Our speaker today was from Bonita House, an organization we give $$$ to every year. It was great to get an update on this service. Rick Cristino gave us insight into how Bonita House has developed over the years. BHI offers intensive residential treatment, supported independent living and case management services for adults ages 18-59 dually diagnosed with severe and persistent psychiatric disabilities and substance use disorders. It also offers a day socialization program for people living with a serious mental illness.

BHI was founded as a mental health agency in 1971, and has been associated with St. Mary Magdalen Church since its beginning. It was developed as a humane alternative to traditional psychiatric institutionalization. Since 1991, BHI has evolved into a specialized dual-diagnosis agency, while continuing to provide services to mental health clients without a co-occurring substance use disorder. BHI works with a staff of 45, a budget of about 5 ½ million dollars (5% fundraising, 20% user fees, and 75% state and federal monies), and a number of satellite homes in and around Berkeley. Patients are refered by self, family members, or hospital staff for patients who need to stabalize after treatment. They service about 500 people a year.

Mr. Cristino advised us at the beginning of his presentation that he was delighted to find that he fit right into our group due to the color of his hair (gray). It was noted, however, that he has too much of it!!! Thank you, Rick, for sharing Bonita House with us.

D. Melandry finished off his duties of the day by leading us in the Pledge.

SAQOTD:

If you want your children to keep their feet

on the ground, put some responsibility

on their shoulders.

Abigail Van Buren

SAQOTW:

Nature gave you your face,

but you have to provide the expression.

KIWANIS CLUB u A Most Outstanding Service Club u BERKELEY, CA

Today was a day to celebrate The Kiwanis Club of Berkeley; a day to be so proud of being a Kiwanian. We celebrated with the students who were awarded a total of $40,000 in 2007 Berkeley Kiwanis Scholarships.

The only hic-cup in the festivities was the weather; our plans for lunch on the veranda were changed at the last minute to our former digs. Virginia greeted the guests with a cheery welcome and smiled at us Kiwanians as she collected lunch ticket money.

Although the Scholarship Chair had bright yellow agendas scattered on all the tables and at the head table, ReTread Jeff ignored most of the details (Jeff, using an early version of the agenda is not an accepted excuse). So if you kept an agenda, ignore it; the official ReTread Agenda is in this newsletter. ReTread opened and conducted an abbreviated meeting to allow time for the Scholarship Celebration. BobR lead us in GBA (it certainly was not his fault that we were so out of key), JohnP gave a powerful invocation, and George (I think; there was confusion, see above) was in charge of the fine box.

The key announcement: For a blissful K FAMILY DINNER, go to Roberta’s and Frank’s house this Friday night. Denise has the details.

ReTread then turned the gavel over to Scholarship Chair Tamara. We started with a “get to know what Kiwanis is all about” section. George talked about “What is Kiwanis” by relating why he chose Kiwanis and what it means to BE a Kiwanian--he “found a family to do community service with.” . JohnP gave a history of the Foundation, including where we get the $$ for the scholarship. Foundation dollars have grown over the years, thanks to generous bequeaths and donations from

Berkeley Kiwanians. A current balance of $651,000 allows us to give these generous scholarships. Next, other Kiwanis service projects were presented. VC talked about RIF. We all smiled as she described the looks on the kids’ faces when they realized they got to take home the book they had chosen! Jack proudly explained about our projects at Gualala and Cassedero.

Tamara talked about the Kiwanis scholarship program. But, first, Duane was recognized for his work as Foundation President.

So how do we choose the scholarship winners? We look at their academic transcript and two references. We also read three essays from the applicants: an essay about the applicant (much is learned in what they choose to write about and how they choose to write it); an essay about their activities and work; and an essay about one time they changed someone’s life. Why those three topics? Because those topics also describe a Kiwanian: we are active in our studies, our work, our retirement; we are enjoying our lives through activities like dancing or fishing or traveling; and, through Kiwanis, we actively make a difference in people’s, especially kids’, lives.

The counselors were then recognized (for the work they do with the students) and thanked (for promoting the scholarship program). Ilene Abrams (Berkeley HS), Leena Yee (El Cerrito HS) and Vicky Lilienthal (Albany HS) received loud and long Thank-You applauses. (Unfortunately Counselor Elizabeth Sandberg of Berkeley HS was unable to join us).

The scholarship committee was recognized and thanked for the hours upon hours they put in (planning the application criteria, reading 31

applications, ranking the applicants, meeting to decide on the winners, meeting to re-evaluate the process and plan for next year) to make this day possible. A huge THANK YOU to the scholarship committee: Art, Bill K’berg, Denise, George, Jack, Jeff, JohnP, Phuoc, and Ted Ono.

The scholarship recipients and their guests were “hosted” by the members of the scholarship committee. Each member introduced his/her recipient:

Bill K’berg--Leslie Ribvich (from El Cerrito HS) and her mother

Denise--Leelawan Kaewsawang from BerkeleyHS. George--Brian Mertens and his father

JohnP—Daniel Badel and his mother

Phuoc—Peter Angell and his mother and father

Ted—Nina Gordon-Kirsch and her mom and dad.

Unfortunately, scholarship winner, Rico Chenyek of Berkeley HS was unable to join us.

CircleK Gail gave a pep-talk about joining Circle K at their college; she even volunteered to help them set up a club if none existed.

President Jeff awarded the recipients certificates acknowledging their award. Each winner took the mike to tell us a bit about themselves.

Leslie loves theater and was co-editor of the school paper. Her college choice, Bernard College in New York.

Lee likes art and chose Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts.

Brian was editor of his school newspaper and student body president. He’s headed for the University of Pennsylvania.

Daniel enjoys working with youth through the Jewish Center of the East Bay. He’s planning on majoring in Psychology at Occidental College in LA.

Peter is the Past President of Berkeley Key Club, plays in the orchestra, is on the track team, and is

into ultimate Frisbee. He’s headed for Washington University in St. Louis.

Nina likes track, softball, soccer and working with the Prisoner Book Project. She’ll study Environmental Science at USC.

Tamara turned the meet back to ReTread, with time to insure the coffer grew.

Numerous Happy Six Dollars were tossed into the fine box in honor of our six scholarship recipients

present at the meeting. Even guests joined in the fray. Peter’s mom was happy Peter’s grandfather was an active Kiwanian. Nina’s mom noted her husband’s birthday and his birthday present of Nina’s scholarship. Ask Sandy about her grandchildren; she gave money to show us a picture. Debra mentioned meeting someone…no details though...and told tales of computer games.

In the midst of the frivolity, Lt Gov Frank dropped by to acknowledge the students.

Our own Gail was asked to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. With a thoughtful introduction, she then led us in The Pledge.

The Scholarship Chair would like to add a personal note. Thank you to all who made this luncheon possible: the scholarship committee, VC for the fantastic table decorations, Roberta for the leis in appropriate school colors, Jack for working with Berkeley City Club on the luncheon (which was yummy), JohnP for helping with the follow-up letters and organizing the “how to get the $” letters, George for fantastic “Introduction to Kiwanis; please come to a meeting” letters that each parent received, Art for assisting the scribe in taking fantastic notes because she couldn’t, and to those behind the scenes that quietly did stuff. I know I’ve missed folks…so a huge thank you to all.

We had a successful, fun, lively, enthusiastic luncheon!

KIWANIS CLUB uA Most Outstanding Service Clubu BERKELEY

What a beautiful day! The door to the garden was open--so serene and inviting that CK’er Alex had to explore.

Frank Bliss was at the ticket table, and eventually we were called to what passes for order for our group.

The Chairman for the month had efficiently named song leader, invocator, and fine collector, but neglected to tell any of them.

Our patriotic song was to be led by George M. Protesting that he had never done this sort of thing before, he came to the fore. And in a moment of inspiration, he called upon Ed Levitch to help. So, we had a duo, of pitches to choose from, and then an interloper from the rear tried to rescue them with yet another one. Well, it was a shaky start, but it ended with glorious harmony. We hope that God will bless America, in spite of the way we sing.

Invocator Sandy ad lib’ed: Thankful for the weather, asking blessings on our service for one child at a time, and grateful for ‘tender mercies’.

Virginia C. declined fine-collector duties, but, not to fear, we had one anyway. John P. stepped forward to take on the retread box.

We had a gaggle of “Officials” in attendance. Lt. Gov. F. B., Lt. Gov. Elect., E. L., Past DISTINGUISHED Lt. Gov’s. V.C., and R. B. and I think J. A. was there, too.

We had a crowd from Circle K, too: Cheriz, Joe, Kim, Alex& Gail. Cheriz reminded us of all the wonderful service projects they do, including our belated One-K day project at the King Jr. track on Sunday. Oakland Tech Key Club joined us for the great weed-out there. She also reminded us of the K Family dinner to be held at the Bliss’ on May 18. Sign ups to be circulated this week and next.

All this and a real guest, too. Tracy Burke (Hope I got the last name right, but if not, come back again and we’ll get it right for sure.) from Union Bank.

Announcements:

RIF (Reading is FUNdamental) distributions will be done on the 9th and 10th. We got the site list just before noon. Not so many kids as last time. Sign up for specific date, time and location was circulated.

We had quite a few interclubs since last report: 5 at the Circle K banquet, 11 at the DCM, as Ed was elected the next Lt. Gov., 11 at One-K day, 5 at Albany-El Cerrito.

Next Week The Scholarship award luncheon—to be served on the terrace. $40,000. to be awarded to 7 kids, from 3 schools, represented by 4 counselors. Be there to show our support of this vital ‘one child at a time’ mission of BK. After the scholarships are granted, it is our plan (thanks to Geo. M. for the suggestion) to send follow-up letters to both the parents and the students, to show our continued interest, and to encourage a life-time of involvement with Kiwanis in service of the community.

DCM meeting this Thursday. This time it will be at Sergio’s Pizza at 7:00. 150 W Juana, in San Leandro. It is located just across from the Safeway, and is within walking distance of San Leandro BART [Scribe’s suggestion: Come just a trifle early to order—Good salads, pizza, etc.]

Denise Haughin was awarded her 6 year perfect attendance pin. But before he would hand it over, the Ruling Retread started to interrogate her about escrow and closing costs on her new home. She said everything went well and is all taken care of. But, it seems that he felt that there was also a Kiwanis excise tax for new home buyers. So Denise cheerfully gave.

Important new info for your roster:

    Denise Haughin (VP)

    (residence)

    3799 Harbor St.

    Pittsburg, CA 94565

    (925) 473-9988

    [Business numbers still the same]

So, in the spirit of giving the Denise started, we had Happy and Sad $$.

S$ Betty Lowman couldn’t be here, but after visiting the hospital, is home now taking her prescribed medication. (Hope it is effective and soon!) Get well Betty!

??$ George ?? Didn’t catch what, ’cause a sign up came around.

S$ Tammy: Art is not here to prolong his “once in a row” perfect attendance streak. He’s in Houston on business, but SS$ (doubly sad $) he then flies on to a currency auction. Who know what will be left of the family finances?

H$ Jack R. That Denise’s move to the new place went well, and that he got there after all the heavy lifting had already been done.

H$$ Phuoc: Great Circle K banquet and Sunday project.

H$$ Joe Lee: His glasses, which dropped out of his pocket onto the track at the Sunday project, were found, unharmed, by Tony Ng. Also thanks to the Carpenter’s for the use of the van.

$S Bill C.: We are in town. (and not on a cruise)

H$ F Bliss: Emil and family (including the cat) all arrived safely to Korea. Also for the Circle K banquet.

S$$ R. Bliss: Evie couldn’t be here today because having a tooth pulled. (Hope you are recovering well, Evie!) and that Frank and she would not be able to be at the scholarship lunch.

Sleepy$ from Deborah: Lack of sleep from staying awake trying to think of ways to get more folks (especially younger ones) involved in Kiwanis.

Our Speaker was Helen Rigby, Development Director for the Aurora Theater Company.

Ms Rigby began her professional life as a flutist, with a special love for small chamber groups. Unfortunately, the travel required for such a career was not suitable for her, so she decided to be involved in the arts at the management level instead. About 6 months ago, after an impressive career in management with several non-profits in Philadelphia, PA, she was lured to Berkeley by her adult children who live in the Bay Area. And she is excited to be working with such an innovative group as the Aurora Theater.

When the Theater group first began, it performed at the Berkeley City Club. There was only seating for 60 in the Members Lounge Room they used. As a result, they became known for the intimacy of the theater experience. They moved several years ago to their own building, next to the Berkeley Rep on Addison Street. Although it provides for a slightly larger audience, seating 150, it maintains the intimacy they are famous for. The stage is surrounded by audience on three sides, and no seat is more than 4 rows from the stage. So it is like “Chamber Theater”, analogous to the chamber music Ms Rigby loves.

Among the things that make the troupe unique are the New Play Festival they hold, and also stage readings where you can get a copy of (new) plays and read along as the actors do a stage reading of the play. [I got the impression that one also had an opportunity to critique the play.]

Also Aurora takes theater to the schools. The Education Director for the group works with high school teachers to involve young people and bring theater alive. This year they are featuring Trojan Women.

Current productions at the Theater:

Private Jokes, Public Places, through May 13

Bosoms and Neglect, June 15 – July 22

To close off her talk, she had us check the brochures handed out. One had a coupon for 2 free tickets. Joe Lee from Circle K won.

See you on the terrace next week!

KIWANIS CLUB u A Service Club on the Move u BERKELEY, CA

‘Twas a good crowd today. Almost all of the regulars and a plethora of Circle K. To those of us who were at Gualala it was a great surprise to see so many of them were able to make it to lunch. We “elders” were nursing blisters and sore muscles, but the “younguns” were nimble and ready to go. And they did ALL the heavy lifting and most of the work (not to detract from the efforts of Kiwanian painters). They also did most of the partying, giving rise to complaints from the Camp Staff who thought it would have been nice to get some sleep on Friday night. Reportedly, things were a little calmer on Saturday night, but I wouldn’t know - asleep by 9 both nights!!

Yes Gualala is the highpoint of our year if you don’t include presidential demotions, and this was a Gualala to remember. We did a lot and it “looked good”. President Retread tried to postpone discussion of Gualala to the program part of the meeting, but was only marginally successful. At first, not very successful in anything since he couldn’t get the PA system to work and the Carps were back, contributing (in female voice) to the hullabaloo. But, we did get going.

Debra was exercising her new “full member” badge by holding down the ticket table again, even though no one had bothered to give her the normal support in the form of some change. Most of the

“wheels” were up in the “lounge” meeting as part of the scholarship committee – a meeting which threatened to extend well into the official club meeting. Chair Tammy finally cut off the extraneous discussions, and the $40,000 will be distributed to 7 very deserving graduating seniors. The winners will (hopefully) join us for lunch (with family and advisors) on May 15, so be sure to attend.

When Retread finally got the PA system working, the meeting proceeded. To try and redeem himself, he called on our musical virtuoso (Frank) to lead is in a patriotic song and to stir the waters a bit Frank opted for “My Country ‘Tis” and, SURPRISE, it seemed that everyone knew it AND found the right key. It was greaaat! His better half, Roberta, was called upon for a May Day Invocation, and concentrated on “Freedom”.

We had an interclub from Albany/El Cerrito in the form of Bill K’Berg and Ted Ono who are participants in the scholarship committee. Since A/EC is slightly short of active members these days, I do believe that 2 makes a full interclub for them. And if you wonder why that club gets a say in “our” scholarships, it’s because Gordon Whitehead directed that the income from his trust be used to support scholarship aims of graduates from high schools in the 3

communities (Albany, Berkeley and El Cerrito). Gordon was a dual member back in the days when that was not a fully recognized facet of Kiwanis. And, he had been instrumental in establishing the A/EC club.

So, we also had a real, live guest from Union Bank. I should know her name and probably could find it in a past Kollegiate but you know how hard it is to remember or to walk downstairs to my Kollegiate library at my advanced age! Hopefully, she will be back and I can offer my apologies.

Boy did we have the Circle Kers today. Joe was late but Cheriz did the introductions. I would have missed all their names, but Phuoc leaned over my shoulder and wrote “Ashley, Cheriz, Virginia, Jean, Maggie, Alex, and Jenny on my note pad. I can read his writing better than my own!! He didn’t include Joe due to Joe’s lateness. I guess Joe does occasionally have to stick it out in class! Their last meeting of the year is this week and their end-of-year dinner is this Friday, May 5, but that’s not the end of their service year since they will be out at MLK School to help us. To be hones, they do ALL the work!

That brought on Don to talk about our service project at MLK (on Hopkins below the Alameda) Sunday, 7 May. It develops that this summer the track will be refurbished so it is fitting that Kiwanis and Circle K will gather at 9 AM to clean up the weeds and other mess that has gathered since our last work party there. Don mentioned that the Club’s credit card will be used to provide pizza, etc., for the workers. Hope you realize that the card has a $500 limit, Don; I’m sure you know how much pizza a Circle K member can eat!!

That caused Sandy to announce that after hearing about Oakland’s Emerson school last week, she has found that the library there is due for refurbishing and there’s lots of work to do moving stuff out to make room for the workers. So, a Kiwanis work party is in the planning stage for Saturday, June 2. Mark your calendar – details later.

And Roberta wanted to recognize Debra, our newest and (reportedly) youngest Kiwanian who stepped up and led the Circle K contingent to Cazadero to assist in the annual set-up for summer. This year, the team was “assisted” by some rain, but at least it wasn’t has hot as it was at Gualala (83 degrees!).

It’s a ways off, but the first annual Berkeley Kiwanis OKTOBERFEST (German spelling) is now firmly scheduled (the Oompah Band is signed up) for Saturday, October 13. Chair Duane is now working tirelessly developing the menu. He mentioned “wurst” and we hope he knows that Saags makes the best “wurst” in the East Bay.

Retread also wanted to recognize Bob S. (actually, he wanted to extract some $$$) for his receipt of the Frank Zamboni Ice Skating Award (or something like that). Bob then got to tell us all about operating the first Zamboni Ice Machine and later selling them all over. (And, he paid!)

So, was Gualala a great project or not?? It seems that all the participants, including Circle K, thought so. Jack summarized the weekend as great food, great camaraderie, and great service. Of course, he is biased, but for once we all agree with him. What did we do (besides sleep)?

1. Developed a beautiful set of steps down what was an informal, steep, dangerous, dirt

path. The 9 steps that resulted (after placing and removing probably 14 as plans changed) were designed by Ed (! ‘nuff said), and executed by Debra (who almost executed Ed). Debra’s able assistant was George who created the best blockage of the old path ever seen. He also managed to come up with a supervisor’s chair (and sat in it until Jack came along and took over that position).

2. Nearby (and always fighting with the path folks for tools) was the Egeberg/Piercy engineering team installing THE DITCH around the latrine (toilet) to drain away the water which is known to lap around the feet of utility users)

3. In the dining hall the Kiwanis amalgamated painters were sprucing up the walls and floor under the watchful eyes of Sandy, Denise, and Elizabeth who also showed they could wield a mean brush.

4. Phuoc led a team sealing the Hearn memorial picnic benches.

5. Duane and a bunch (3) of Hendersons replaced the deck on the Staff House (not to be confused with the Manager’s House).

6. Thom (of Gualala Staff) and helpers were replacing stringers on the swinging bridge.

7. An unrecognized group worked on the pediatric trauma dolls in lieu of arm labor. I didn’t get to see them at work, so not sure just who the folks were – just saw the results since I carried the stuff back in my car.

Jane was our safety officer and did a great job as evidenced by only passing out two band aids. Fortunately, she was not at the right place to see JP fall into his own ditch, but that was not a serious incident; a bit embarrassing, though!

It’s impossible to give credit to all the Circle Kers who did the heavy work on all the above projects; Joe Lee had them all on his computer and kept reassigning folks to keep

them “fresh”. There was a team detailed to help the cook clean up and Lauren Leonard found her calling as an assistant cook.

So, farewell to Gualala although there is some talk of tackling a special project to replace that worn out toilet now that the rain water has hopefully been controlled. Even with Circle K help, we couldn’t do that in a weekend!!

This is a bit long, but I’ve still left out a bunch of stuff that I wanted to get in. Next week, a new home address and phone number for Denise, and is she ever excited.

KIWANIS CLUB u A Club on the Moveu BERKELEY

Well, let’s see. . . How should I begin to describe the meeting? Sunny day, good company, something they called “stroganoff”, veggies, fruit & flan.

Jeff called the meeting to order—as orderly as we ever get. In the absence of Bob Rice, we needed a volunteer to lead GBA. Frank was impressed into service by acclamation. He stepped forward with a smile; gave us a pitch which we thoroughly missed—SO many wrong notes! But, not to be defeated, he had us try again. This time we actually did it. Our singing wasn’t too bad, either.

Rev. Fay offered a prayer for guidance for the country, and for our club, especially as we try to help the world one child and one community at a time. And for protection for our service men, wherever they are stationed.

The appropriateness of the prayer became evident as our guests, seated at the same table as Rev. Fay, were introduced. Frank and Roberta’s son Emil, who flies F15s in the Air Force, was one of the guests. Kelly, from Enterprise Car Rental, was also at the same table. She often works with Frank’s insurance agency when a rental car is needed as part of the claim settlement. Frank gave a glowing endorsement, but I guess we couldn’t fine him for advertising, since it wasn’t his firm.

Circle K was introduced by Gail: Cheriz, Ashley, Nah, Evan, and Joe. The club is busy as always with service projects, including on the 21st at Camp Cazadero and this weekend at Camp Gualala, also May 6 at MLK Jr. Hi clean up and Spring Fling Fair at Emerson (Berkeley). And don’t forget the Spring Banquet on May 4. This time at the top of Barrows Hall, with panoramic views; cost $20.

A sign-up for the next Reading Is FUNdamental (RIF) distribution on May 9 & 10 was circulated.

We had a Secret Greeter (Bob B.) who, unfortunately, had to report that many did not greet him. But in a spirit of nobility and generosity, he said he would not tell, and contributed $20.00 to cover all the guilty parties’ fines. Thanks Bob, but come on folks, let’s not let this sort of thing happen again!

Significant milestones: Piercy anniversary (with a complaint that in previous years it had been announced in the club a few days before the event, giving him time to avoid trouble at home, instead of AFTER, as it was being done this year.)

Bill Hannawalt’s birthday. Coy about how many, and begged us NOT to sing--Wise choice.

Perfect attendance pins: Phuoc (5), Duane (20), Sandy [not sure I qualify, but I’ll take it anyway] (2)

Lots of H$

Bob “the stripper” B. — for the delicious peas now at farmers’ markets. Time is short. The season only lasts 4 to 6 weeks. The nickname came from the demonstration he gave of how to strip the string from snow peas. “It’s all in the wrist”

Jennifer—Who was happy to finally be able to join us again. The child care agency she works for recently suffered a triple whammy. Inspections and reviews by auditors, the Feds AND the State. All over now and they passed just fine!

Jeff—Re-instituting the New Car tax/donation/fine. He just joined the ranks of the “pious Prius”. Now that he has one he recognizes them on the road more. Amazing how many are on the road around Berkeley.

Denise—For the wonderful kids at Oakland Tech Key Club. She accompanied them on the bus to their Long Beach convention. She reports that they, and especially next year’s President, are just awesome. Linda Hannawalt also went to the convention but drove separately.

Phuoc—for the weekend at Camp Cazadero with Debra, Bob B. and 12 CK’ers. In spite of pouring rain they got the canvas tops to the tent cabins up.

Plus one very S$—One of the young people killed at Virginia Tech was a Circle K leader, well respected by all there.

Our speaker was Dave Hendsch, talking about Emerson Elementary School “On the Move”.

Dave is a retired teacher, but his connection to Emerson came three ways: As a member of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, as a volunteer with Faith Network of the East Bay, and as a former member of Grand Lake Kiwanis.

This is a story of how volunteer efforts can really make a difference.

This Emerson, not to be confused with Emerson Elementary of Berkeley, is in Oakland, one block from Oakland Tech High School; located between Lawton and Shafter, just across from the Temescal Swimming Pool. It was a failing school. Although in a richly diverse neighborhood with lots of middle class families, most of the middle class kids did not attend. Daily attendance of those enrolled was less than 95%. The Library was closed and used only for storage for over 7 years. So long, in fact, that the school district central office no longer had record of it even having a library. Teacher morale was low. Test scores were low. The State appointed administrator even considered closing it.

Much of the effort started with Faith Network, which seeks to improve underperforming schools in the East Bay, primarily Oakland, but also at Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley. Although faith based, there is no proselytizing. Volunteer effort is focused to what the school itself suggests it needs.

Frank and Roberta Bliss were also involved early on, as was Grand Lake Kiwanis and Linda Kiehle Hannawalt.

At first the Principal and staff were skeptical. But much has been accomplished, so that now they are really appreciative.

Some of the highlights:

In one year, daily attendance was improved by 3% via a “Bikes for Kids” program. Each month 2 donated bikes were raffled off. To be eligible, students had to have perfect attendance. Attendance has continued to climb.

Teacher appreciation lunches held once a month; capped off with a community dinner sponsored by Grand Lake Kiwanis.

Thanks to the efforts of Key Club, Kiwanis, and Faith Network volunteers in 2004 & 2005/06 the library was cleaned up, books cataloged, and funds were raised to hire a librarian for the balance of the school year. The school district promised to budget a librarian for the following year, which they did. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, she needed to resign mid-year, but the library is still being kept open with volunteers. 12 classes a week use the library.

There are reading labs, targeting 2nd grade students, so that they don’t fall behind. 5th graders were sent to a Science Horizons program at Mission Springs conference grounds. Local businesses and parents from the neighborhood are becoming more involved. Test scores are rising.

The moral: Intentional T.L.C. is a powerful tool for change.

PS: Scribe’s personal desire is that we Kiwanians and Key Club keep up our involvement. How about a carpet shampoo for the Library, and/or a weed-out/clean-up day, maybe in conjunction with Oakland Tech Key Club?

What would life be if we
had no courage to attempt anything?

"Super Bowl –like hype!” – Prez Jeff

That’s how our fearless leader began our lunch today – by likening the excitement he’s sensing for our upcoming, back-to-back service projects as “Super Bowl-like hype.” A few weeks back, we were “hip.” This week it’s “hype.” What’s next? Let’s not turn ourselves into “hippies”, okay?!

Openings

Our own Bob R. led us well in GBA (almost accompanied on violin by Frank B., who’s intentions were good, but arrived just a hair too late to join Bob), John P. gave a blessed invocation, and yours truly, George M., collected money for tix at the door.

Guests

Today we enjoyed the company of Don M’s guest, Stacie Burks-Garcia of Union Bank and the Aurora Theatre Co. The membership committee would like to take this opportunity to hype the bringing of guests to our lunch. It’s great to see new faces and to discover community members like Stacie who are interested in serving children. Great job, Don!

Speaking of seeing faces, I thought it was especially nice to see the mugs of long-time Kiwanians Leo I. and Dick F. today! And, or course, it was also great to be joined by several Circle K’rs – Joe, Jenny, Keiko and Virginia.

Fines

Today, Phuoc K. manned the retread fine box/thing. There weren’t too many fines today, but the always smiling Bettye L. received a fine for arriving

slightly tardy and making the rounds to shake hands with her friends and fellow Kiwanians. Prez Jeff, maybe she too sensed the hype in the room and couldn’t help it?! Then again, the day’s secret greeter, Roberta B. helped to raise insurance $$$ from Don M. and Frank B. (How appropriate!) and fines from Duane L., Linda H. and Bill H.

Other $$$ exchanges were for donations to and green bracelets for Guide Dogs for the Blind courtesy of Bill F. and for Kiwanis t-shirts and work aprons courtesy of Sec Jack R. Thanks to Ed L. for his t-shirt purchases for Elizabeth T. and Debra W., and to Phuoc K. and others for the aprons! (By the way, Ed, it was great to see you in bow tie again for the first time in awhile!)

Circle K Report

Joe spoke to us about the latest goings on in UCB Circle K, especially their hype to be joining us for Cazadero, Gualala and the MLK Track Clean-Up. The academic year is winding down, so their Spring Banquet is just a few weeks away on Friday 4 May from 6-9pm. It will be held in the Lipman Room atop Barrows Hall. Other items of note for Circle K:

  • Tuesday night (4/17) was the third-to-last general meeting of the year; and
  • This week is busy with the first committee meetings of the new club chairs.

Video Hype

Prez Jeff shared a few-minute video of the Gualala work project from a few years ago. Who were all those young looking Kiwanians?!

  • Roberta B. in her sporty car

  • Frank B. with his girl in her sporty car
  • Ed L. working hard and supervising all at once
  • Virginia C. dawning her Minnie Pearl hat
  • Treasurer – Sandy H.

So, why no photos of onion pies? Is all this talk of the great onion pies of Gualala just hype? The people (and their stomachs) need some answers!

Service Calendar

Jack R. spoke to us about the Gualala weekend, Don M. reported on the MLK Track Clean-Up, and Evie H. reminded us of the RIF Distribution. Please add them to your calendar and join in!

  • CAZADERO – 21 APRIL
  • Gualala – 27-29 April
  • MLK Track – 6 May from 9am to 12pm
  • RIF Distribution – 9-10 May

Other Announcements

Our own Ed L. will follow in Frank B’s footsteps as Lt. Gov! Our new club officers for next year are:

  • President – Phuoc K.
  • President Elect – Denise H.
  • Immediate Past President – Jeff E.
  • Vice President – George M.
  • Treasurer – Sandy H.
  • Secretary – Jack R.

Happy & Sad Dollars

There were many happy faces, but so as not to turn them into sad faces, Prez Jeff moved us right into our day’s program so we wouldn’t miss out on our speaker’s talk. But wait! It had been so long since we’d seen Linda H. and Bill H. that it was fitting to hear from them – for several dollars, of course. They had a very happy time on their recent cruise, the highlights of which were spending time with their son and his family in Bangkok and Linda’s casino winnings of $1300! Of course, Bill “took the fifth” when asked to comment on Linda’s report!

Speaker

Our speaker today was David Wagner, Executive Director of Cazadero Music Camp. The timing of David’s visit was perfect in light of this weekend’s Kiwanis work party at the camp. Ironically, David is not a musician. Yet, he brings great experience to Caz having been involved with the Boy Scouts. David didn’t skip a beat as he made several key points during his presentation:

  • Caz was established in 1957.
  • The Berkeley High Band Director started Caz.
  • The City of Berkeley actually owns the land.
  • Everyone who applies for a scholarship receives support.
  • Caz is always looking for financial support and help, such as Board members.
  • 78% of instructors return each summer.
  • There are orchestra, concert band and jazz band ensembles.

There are several programs put on by the camp, including music weekends where kids receive instruction that culminates in a performance for families, as well as family camp. The Kiwanis work weekend is essential for readying the camp for the summer.

Final Thoughts

I believe we need a variation on the definition of hype. One that takes into consideration all the service we have done and are doing in the Berkeley area (and beyond) should do…

KIWANIS CLUB u THE CLUB ON THE MOVE!!u BERKELEY, CA

A lovely SPRING- warm, sunny, gorgeous- day, in the company of great friends at a meeting of: THAT BERKELEY CLUB ON THE MOVE-

This is the type of day to have a BBQ or picnic, especially since our sitting LTG F. Bliss advised us that we are the Division “buzzing with service”- (see list below for what BK has to offer!!) – and there were many, many busy bees in the room making so much noise it was evident no one had control!

Two gentle men greeted us at the ticket table; your money was taken by the above mentioned LTG, and he was supervised by business manager G. Maxe. (This is the title GM says he has assumed!!!) Our resident song leader, B. Rice, led us in a robust GBA (the ending measures are always harmonious!!!). The Rev. R. Bliss was fairly short on the words- and asked for blessings on our upcoming service events. “Mr Hip” D. Melandry had no trouble running around with the retread fine box. The new hip must be working well!! If there was an S.G. (Secret Greeter) he/she remained unknown to the rest of us, and no fines were put into the tire for the non- shaking of a friendly hand. However, you did need to pick up and pin on your badge- left in the badge box it cost you $$$.

Guests were introduced. The ACE team of VC and BC introduced their district manager (and reserve cop) Gary Freedman. Some folks stated he looked familiar- is that because he has “stopped” them before- or because he has been to BK before? Retread Pres. Egeberg stated that he had invited his better half, but she chose to go elsewhere (shopping maybe?).

Immediately called to the podium was the new “Retread” Circle K Family Chair Joe!!! He introduced, to a huge round of applause, the new Golden Gate Division LTG- our wonderful Gail N.

Other members were present… including Hedwig, Alex, Virginia, Ashley, & Jenny. Busy Bees??? You bet. Adopt A Creek,

Chapparal House, , Relay For Life and the first DCM of LTG Gail are all on the calendar for this weekend. Many Kiwanians (and guest GF) gave monies towards the Relay For Life fundraiser.

And on the calendar for Berkeley Kiwanians!!

Sat., April 21- Camp Cazadero work party under the

direction of new member D. Wong.

April 27-29- Camp Gualala under the direction of

incoming Pres. P. Khong.

May 6- MLK Jr. High Track cleanup under the direction

of D. Melandry.

May 9 & 10- RIF Distribution under the direction of

V. Carpenter.

G. Maxe and Circle K. Service Chair Hedwig are planning a monthly (2nd Tuesday) meeting in which to discuss upcoming and possible service projects in which we all can participate if we desire. Tonight will be the first of such meetings- this one to be held at Chipotle Restaurant near the campus. Any and all of us are invited to attend this monthly meeting, make suggestions, etc. etc. George’s and Hedwig’s hope is to have a project available for us to participate in every weekend.

In the meantime: We heard from sitting LTG F. Bliss that there will be a DCM at the San Leandro Library this coming Thursday. He would LOVE a huge Berkeley turnout to hear Circle K orator Alex Chu give his winning oratory speech… and help elect a new LTG.

HappySad $$$ were numerous. J. Alexander is most delighted that she will be going to Gualala. She is JJJJ that past Circle Kers Michael John and Ivy will be getting married 7/7/07. MJ will be back from Afghanistan soon. (If this editor sends Jane the onion pie recipe, some pies may show up at Gualala after all!!). S. Hearn received a call from B. Lowman that she (B) was L she couldn’t attend Kiwanis today because she was J she was going on a vacation (and this from a retired person!) B. Fay was J for C. Fitch’s new hat and L for only three Berkeley Kiwanians at the Richmond Theater fund raiser this past Thursday evening. P. Khong was J that he attended for the first time that wonderful event. C. Fitch had a very J$ for his new hat (celeberating 91 years young). D. Leonard is very J that he has rowed to Hawaii and back on his rowing machine. B.Rice is exceptionally J that he has his glasses back after two weeks in repair!! B. Barnwell is thrilled J that he is going to a Wednesday $2 per ticket A’s game. Your Retread Pres. came up with a J thought- the motto for cruise ship service clubs could be “On The Move.”

Yes… We did have a “speaker”… Retread Pres assisted by Gimpy Secretary led our annual BK meeting- First off we heard the list of the slate of officers for the upcoming term. As follows:

President: Phuoc Khong

Imm. Past : Retread Egeberg

Vice Pres: George Maxe

Treasurer: Sandy Hearn

Secretary: Gimpy Rosano

Directors: 2007-2009 Directors: 2007-2008

John Piercy Evie Goodman

Eliz. Turnbloom Virginia Carpenter

    Bettye Lowman

J. Alexander had to instruct J. Piercy on how to make a motion- which was seconded and passed. So those are your new officers beginning Oct. 1.

Then up to the podium came D. Leonard, head of the Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation. He gave us an overview of our Foundation over the years. Officers serve without compensation for a period of six years. Our assets are now in a managed account with Vangard, very much to the relief of the foundation board members!! We do not touch the principle, giving scholarships only from our gains. Scholarships may be awarded to students from the Berkeley, Albany and El Cerrito school districts.

This year there are 38 (I think that’s the number) applicants for 10 available scholarships. The scholarship committee of 10 members will be making their selections soon according to committee head T. Paradis… Hmmm … wonder where she is?? Did she take off to Scotland with some of the gains???

If you want more information on the BK Foundation give Barrister Leonard a call!!!

Don’t know who the rest of the speakers are for the month of April, but bring friends and/or future members to our luncheons. The more the merrier, and we really are a lot of fun!!!!

SAQFEK: To get more out of life….

      give more of yourself.

“Mom”

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

Dale Carnegie

Have a great week…

Your editor: VC
