Out & About
It was a beautiful sunny summer day, and the A-Team jumped into action, with D. Wong trying to sell tix and keep the $$$ straight, B.  Rice leading his gazillionth GBA, D. Leonard trying to collect money in a fire extinguisher while eating three desserts at the same time, J. Piercy praying for rain while thankful for other things. We also had a Secret Greeter with the same name, who didn't manage to net much.
Meanwhile PrezD started the meeting with a tough measure that resulted in fining all members not showing for the Governor's Visit last Saturday at Rossmoor. We did have a decent showing of 11 stalwarts (initials FB, RB, BC, VC, BF, DH, SH, PK, EL, JR, DW).
Mysterious Underpinnings
There were some younger folks wandering around (with a jar grossly full of teeny candies of all different sizes, shapes and shades), whispering SOMETHING to each person they ran into. Then, there was another (slightly older) lady inexplicitly donning a pink tassel hat (you know, the kind that Santa's helpers wear, but of course, they're usually red/white). What was up with her?
Circle the K Wagons
Lady Monica arose and introduced Gina, Annette, Josh – and then went on to list their many past, present, and future accomplishments. Last week it was "Adopt-a-Pet" and more. Coming up is a visit to "The Redwoods" in SF, Sat from 9:30 – 12:30 (RIDES NEEDED!), costume-making (for the Festival on Feb 21) at Le Conte School (NEED FLEECE!), another large service project on Feb 22 (details coming). Lastly, an Interclub is needed TONIGHT for their general membership meeting in 155 Dwinelle. Hope you were there!
B. K. to the Rescue
Ø  J. Rosano announced that it is the last day to sign up for Mid-Year Conference in Sacramento on Feb 21. Contact JR to get your free lunch (and much more) now.
Ø  Prez D. Haughin conveyed a very distinguished plaque awarded to our very own B. Carpenter by the Governor last Saturday. And another GREAT honor: R. Bliss appointed as a 3-Year Region 9 Trustee! Congrats, Bill & Roberta!!
Ø  While he was at it, he quickly got into "auctioneer" mode and sold special Bliss fresh PLUM jam to J. Egeberg, a hand-woven Bliss scarf to E. Goodman, 2 Berkeley Rep tix to D. Leonard.
Ø  P. Khong: The Key Club "Enclave" is this weekend. Location: Rossmoor. Sign up now for "back-up rides."
Ø  V. Carpenter: (OFF-THE-WALL AWARD) offered a news article about new facial hair and alleged hopeful new sex appeal to you-know-who (Yes, it's mid-life crisis at its best, or worst – is the motorcycle coming next???)
Ø  B. Carpenter: had a great Interclub on Jan 21 at Alameda and is setting up another (OR TWO) this very night at either (or both) Hayward-Castro Valley or our very own Circle K in Berkeley. CA.

Ø  D. Wong announced the July meeting of the BK Satellite Group this Thur @ 5:30 @ Plearn on University Ave.
Ø  F. Bliss announced upcoming events from our very own YPSO: This Sat in Moraga, March 22 in Castro Valley, and the Grand Finale, our POPS CONCERT on June 7!
Ø  V. Carpenter reminded us that there is a RIF Distribution next Wed-Thur. Sign-ups have been distributed, but there's still time!
Ø  D. Haughin read a nice acknowledgement and Thank You from the Frisbee family
Ø  And then P.A.'s (that's Perfect Attendance to you neophytes): 2 years to D. Wong (has it been that long?), and 27 years to J. Piercy (has it been that short?)

Happy/Sad $$$$
Ø  P. Khong had both for Cal's performances last weekend and for the Superbowl being a great game (but not admitting how much $$$ he won/lost)
Ø  D. Wong wasn't sure about our (long lost) policy about her newly acquired vehicle but offered a few bucks anyway (meaning she's really happy about it)
Ø  V. Carpenter made flimsy excuses about missing last week's meeting, but it was about an important group of Squaredancers. Maybe they were square or not to be there, but it was a great group of old-time friends. THEN someone allegedly brought out THEIR list of daily pills, and so it went – a true competition – just who had the longest list, and then,
Ø  F. Bliss had a few – for Debra's new car, for Roberta's trustee appointment, and then bragged that he has NO list (as mentioned above), with no sympathy for those who do…
Ø  P. Khong then had another one…a strange one about a new Pixar movie, starring a dual lookalike of our own Grumpy & Gimpy (sounds like a very scary picture)
Ø  B. Rice finished it off with the strangest story of

al l – something about getting a phone call from Florida about winning a few million $$, if only he would send in a cool half-million $$ first. Of course, we all knew that neither he nor Esther would be that foolish…but we weren't quite sure…Anyway, he still had a couple bucks in his pocket to pay for this.
What a Valentines Program!
Yeah, sure it's a bit early. But Program Chair for the month, J. Egeberg, made a flimsy excuse about planning the event for next week but then an irresistible program came along, only for that day. Anyway, today's program, in the person of V. Carpenter, came through like a charm. There was an intense competition on a very tough and in-depth quiz about the esoteric beginnings of Valentine's Day. Whew! It was so well-done, it is attached so you can give it your try. Warning: it's challenging, but very festive and rewarding. Now we know the true meaning of VALENTINES DAY.

NEXT WEEK: Reno wned speaker Charlie Wylie on the topic of bias in the media (right after his prior engagement at UC Berkeley)
OH, BY THE WAY, the "JAR" had much more than any of us thought: 1800 + something. Closest way 1300+ from D. Wong. Congrats, Debra (she won something?)
