On a Clear Day
It was a clear and cold beautiful winter day, and the B-Team jumped into action, with R. Bliss trying to sell tix and then tromp up shortly to the podium to play President-for-a-Day, B.  Rice leading his gazillionth + one GBA, D. Wong trying to collect money in a fire extinguisher while explaining the goings-on of the "splinter group", J. Piercy prayed for rain last week, and was thankful that it worked!
Meanwhile, Fill-In-Prez Roberta started the meeting by immediately selling insurance…and then wishing she had a Secret Greeter!!! (maybe she should have had another type of insurance policy herself? She SHOULD know where to get one – maybe even at a discount).

Be My Valentine?
Today was a sorta Valentines Day meeting cuz we sorta celebrated it early last week. There was only one very special Valentine guest, however: Esther Rice. V. Carpenter tried to take credit for her Special Valentine being there, but she didn't get away with it ("He's there all the time"). On the other hand, another Valentine who's there all the time (F. Bliss) was conspicuously missing – something about someone in his office calling in sick?? (maybe that's what's wrong with our economy – too much sick leave?). Meanwhile, the same VC was running all around selling last-minute VD candy – none too late.

Circle the K

In snuck some mysterious members of the world-renowned UCB Circle K. After chants of "What's going on, what's going on??, Monica took the stand and introduced  Chino & Kenneth (others wandered in aimlessly later and didn't get formally introduced).
·         Last weekend they were doing something on the UC campus while others were over in Muir Woods doing something else. Meanwhile, the costume-making got done for the LeConte School affair, as well as some scrapbook work and cupcake-making on Sunday.
·         Coming up this weekend is a Leadership Forum on Fri night, YEAH project on Saturday, and THEN showing up for service for Chinese New Year in SF on Sunday (Get this: They're asking BK for rides at 5:00 AM (yes, AM) Sunday  -- contact P. Khong (Don't everyone rush to their phone at once!)
·         Lastly, hopefully a BK Interclub turned out for their regular meeting tonight/last night?) – AND they proceeded to sell VD Chocolate Flowers to all of us willing buyers & romantics.

B. K. to the Rescue
Speaking of Interclubs, a snapshot taken by paparazzi of our big star, B. Carpenter, with our Governor, receiving his grand award (as reported last week) was circulated to see what its value might be to certain members. At the same time, a rumor was spreading that he may be on the stage again, at Mid-Year Conference, accepting another award, this time for Interclubbing (large club-honorable mention – whatever that means – anyway, we questioned whether our meager showing today is called a "large club?") Anyway, congratulations are in order!
B. K. to the Forefront
Ø  V. Carpenter stated that RIF is still next week; however, all but one has been canceled (due to circumstances beyond our control). We WILL be at Red Oak Children's Center in Albany at 10:00 am next Thur.
Ø  Berkeley High Key Club Take-Over Next Week.
Ø  D. Wong announced that the Satellite Group's Dine-Out last week attracted quite a few people.
Ø  B. Carpenter announced another Interclub opportunity tonight at the Hayward-Castro Valley Club (the location was probably somewhere in Hayward, or if not, in Castro Valley).
Ø  D. Leonard (Our Very Social Chair) reminded us that St. Pat's Day is on Saturday, March 14 at the Paradis Ranch. He confirmed that there is still no kitchen on site, but what does that matter? More details to follow.
Ø  P. Khong announced some further youth details: Berk Key Club needs more rides!  First of all, this Sun at 6:30 am into SF (No, this is something different than 5:00 am for the Circle K --- but if you're up that early, maybe you can do both!). AND THEN rides are needed April 4 – 6 to their convention in southern Cal (round trip, we presume)
< !--[if !supportLists]-->Ø  J. Piercy brought up a little-known, and rather a challenging (& interesting) project,

apparently involving the State Architect and other famous characters. By the way, the project is building an "Outdoor Classroom" at Washington School. Now here's the stranger part: the schedule is on a Fri and/or Sat near end of March - pour footings. Allow a week or so to let the concrete set, and then come back for up to a full week (school's out) and do the rest (watch out, if Grumpy did the plans, they're in excruciating detail…)
Lastly, our substitute President noted the following:
Ø  That the Circle K gang was all sitting at the same table and that if they did that again, they would be sternly fined.
Ø  That, looking around the room, Membership is an obvious very important priority.
Ø  That D. Leonard has an anniversary (like some of the rest of us) – it's either o n the 26th, or it's the 26th anniversary, or both (we weren't quite sure
Ø  And then more lastly, she invited a few
Happy/Sad $$$$
even though it was way beyond time for our world renowned speaker to start.

Reporter for the  Ages
Charles Wylie is a journalist of vast and extensive worldwide experience for over half a century. He has served as a war correspondent in every US war since WW II. He has lectured in 50 states and on five continents. His articles have appeared in the London Express, New York Times, US News & World Report, Newsweek, Time Magazine. He has appeared on dozens of network and local TV programs. He has lectured at many US universities and colleges. We were lucky to "piggy-back" onto his current trip to speak at our very own UC Berkeley.
Charlie spoke to us today about bias in the media, about two types of reporters: "objective reporters" versus "advocate journalists," the former being often not-too-objective, not by what they say and what they include, but by what they leave out and how much this ends up influencing all of our futures. And then time ran out quickly, but there was time for a couple questions. Thanks, Charlie – very interesting!                                             je
