Newsletter 040609

Past Treasurer John started out the sale of lunch tickets, but was "relieved" by Past Treasurer VC, so he didn't have to worry about "checking out".  He also was able to concentrate on taking meeting notes since he was scheduled to write this Bulletin.  Prexy Denise rang the gong right on the half-hour but got so little response (as in stopping conversations) that she rang it again with more force and the group was silent.  Well, as silent as one would expect.  And then Ed Levitch came in and all semblance of order was destroyed.  Where was Maurice when we needed him??

Bob Rice led us in the patriotic song, ably assisted by Borden Price on the "high notes".  That was followed by a JP invocation which opened with an apology for Borden's high notes and ended with thanks for "His Tender Mercies" (That pronoun does NOT refer to Borden.)  In between were thanks for Kiwanis, the nice weather and the rain – did we cover everything??  After the song Bob "stripped off his jacket" revealing what he called his UCB basketball shirt with a large 98 on the back.  Those of us in the know realized that's his age, not his team number.  Atta Way To Go, Bob!
=0 A

Charlie Fitch, not to be outdone too much displayed his "Grandpa 93" cap although his birthday isn't 'till tomorrow.

The new Circle K Family Chair, Diane Chen, was with us even though last week Monica said that Diane had class and wouldn't be with us 'till Fall.  Diane claimed she was NOT cutting class, but I didn't get how she got to lunch.  Glad to have her and the 5 other UCB Circle Kers who backed her up with us. Since the year is just getting going, she had little to report except for coming events like the meeting tonight, but by the time you see this it was last night.

That stranger with the familiar face at Table 2 (in Denise numbering system) was Jennifer who is "available" now that the program where she worked (teaching nutrition for kids) has closed down – bummer.  Today she brought with her Aunt Catherine from (I think) North Dakota who was sporting a Kiwanis watch that was her late husband's.  In response to urging, she allowed that her application for membership is pending at his club.

It was announced (again) that dining out was to be this Tuesday (again, yesterday or further back when you read this) at Meridian (park at Berkeley Ace and walk west on University) and was timed so that attendees could move on to Barrows Hall for the Circle K meeting.  Boy, that

is real coordination!  We also learned that 40 scholarship applications have been received and are in review process.  The decision as to funding for this year has not been finalized but will be before the winners are actually selected on 23 April.  The award luncheon will be 5 May.

Today was annual meeting/election day at Berkeley Kiwanis.  The final nominations for Club officers and directors were announced by the lone committee member present and there were no other vo lunteers, so the slate was unanimously elected.  Yes, there were some shenanigans necessary to get all the offices filled, but the result will be officers in the "line" for a couple of years.  As you may guess from perusing the list, the Immediate Past President is a "place holder".  Remember, one cannot hold 2 offices at the same time!

Prexy Denise then turned the meeting over to President Leonard of the Kiwanis Club of Berkeley Foundation.  This is a "by year" at the Foundation, so no elections.  Next year the terms of  Rosano and Piercy expire.  Duane briefly reviewed the foundation's history since founding in 1998 and its record of20scholarship awards from that year ($250) thru last year ($38,000) with a maximum of $42,500 in 2007 for a total of $310,000.  He noted that the "dot com" bust in 2002 resulted in reductions in annual scholarship awards until 2006 and the recent market drop would result in another drop this year.  The end-of-year market value of the Foundation was $693,792 in 2006 and $547,185 in 2008.

Members who wish to attend Board meetings should let Duane or Secretary John know so they can be notified of the time/date/place.  The regular venue has space restrictions.

As a final report of general interest, Linda gave a rundown on the Kiwanis Club of Berkeley Quilt program.  Initially envisioned as providing quilts for seniors and hospitalized children (120 quilt goal) it was expanded to include quilts for veterans.   All 120 quilt tops of the original goal have been completed and only fourteen remain to be finished into quilts.  They should be completed this month.  Approximately 33 have been delivered to the Vera Casey Project (kids) here in Berkeley and the  Kids for Quilts and the Kiwanis House in Davis.  Plans are being made to deliver the remaining 87 to the Davis activities and Kyakameena, a Berkeley senior facility.
